The Doctor loves JKR

Anyone else get a daft warm fuzzy feeling when Doctor Who was telling herself a bedtime story in prison, and began with the opening line of Harry Potter? Not sure when this episode was written, but I choose to find significance in the fact the first female Doctor is a fan of JKR!

Pothole is it available anywhere? My kids were talking about it before Christmas, because they were hoping someone might have gone mad and bought the very expensive boxset for them (no one has, because we don't have a DVD player now..)

PotholeParadies · 02/01/2021 20:43

Good question. I'll see what I can find.

nickymanchester · 02/01/2021 20:58

@BuntingEllacott

If you mean the Sarah Jane Adventures, it's available on Amazon Prime, but it's only available as pay to watch (or rather to own).

What that means is that even if you have an Amazon Prime membership you still have to pay extra to watch it.

It's £5.49 to buy season 1 which is in SD and between £7.99 and £10.99 to buy each of the other seasons which are in HD.

You can stream them but I really would suggest that you download any purchases you make.

PotholeParadies · 02/01/2021 21:01

Only available via Amazon prime video that I could find (for truly extortionate amounts per series), or you could buy a DVD of series 1 via Amazon for £2.14. But you'd need also the DVD player.

If you like spin offs, Torchwood's brilliant - definite strong female character there in Gwen Cooper, who's great! (Loved last night's reference to her)
Maybe not watch with kids though as not as child friendly as Dr Who (more violence/emotionally distressing/adult content)

bellinisurge · 02/01/2021 21:13

Gwen is wonderful

Campervan69 · 02/01/2021 21:15

Torchwood sounds good. Is it on BBC IPlayer?

Quaagars · 02/01/2021 21:18

I watched all the Torchwood episodes recently for the first time on BBC Iplayer, as far as I know they're all still on there.

BuntingEllacott · 02/01/2021 21:52

Yeah Torchwood is all on there still as far as I recall. Very much not child-friendly though. Still have a lot of affection for the first series, though I know it's a mixed bag (heck, I even like the Chibnall episodes in the main!) and I know it got a lot of praise for the later, less episodic series. Feels a lot more dangerous than later RTD and Moffat, because people actually suffer horrible fates without cutesy 'not-really!' get out clauses. Really harks back, oddly enough, to that terrifying feeling of seeing a Dalek exterminate someone and watching that x-rayed agony of irreversible death when I was but a babby.

GrolliffetheDragon · 02/01/2021 23:15

The lockdown messages encapsulated the issue for me.

Ok, I just watched the first one and she strongly reminded me of Marian in Maid Marian & Her Merry Men...

Just asked ds (asd dr who fan😂) and apparently jodie is being replaced with julia Foster a 77 year old lady so I doubt that their will be a Yaz dr love thing

Quaagars · 03/01/2021 16:29

Was going to say that about hearing that before but it was an April Fool's and seen I've been beaten to it!

Hmm...just popped up as breaking news on Facebook.

Campervan69 · 04/01/2021 08:20

So funny the comments on Twitter. Lots saying how many diversity boxes will the BBC tick appointing the new doctor. "My moneys on Eddie Izzard" says one. I still reckon BAME drag queen would cover all bases.

MrFMercury · 04/01/2021 09:00

I’m a huge Dr Who fan and love Jodie Whittaker. I was so excited to see her incarnation of the Doctor and when it’s been a good script it’s really looked like it could be amazing.... but there has been only a few really good episodes.

Too much repetition, too much lesson of the week type episodes and as for the companions.... Yaz, Rory knows a bit about waiting for one thing. Enough with the Daleks! How many times are the government going to get hoodwinked into installing them as a new security measure?

I want Who to be brilliant and make me laugh and sometimes make me cry too. I want to be eagerly waiting for the next episode and discussing it with my equally geeky children and mates afterwards. I don’t want this.

merrymouse · 04/01/2021 13:47

I agree with this analysis:

www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jan/04/times-up-which-actor-could-replace-jodie-whittaker-in-doctor-who

She is a better Doctor in real life than the material she has been given, which is a crying shame.

MedusasBadHairDay · 04/01/2021 13:49

I really like her as the Doctor, I do think she's been let down a bit by the writing, but she's still been my favourite so far.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 04/01/2021 16:05

Dr Who has been getting gradually worse since the Matt Smith days (started with being the Clara show), declined throughout Capaldi, and reached a nadir with Jodie.
Nothing to do with the actors. Both Capaldi and Whittaker are fantastic.
Jodie's doctor is just rubbish though. Someone mentioned above about the Doctor being the most intelligent person in the room, and you very rarely get this.
She's said "I don't know what to do" more than any Doctor I can remember.
They have too many companions and not enough for them to do, filled them out with personal back stories which are tedious and stereotyped.
At least Graham had some comedy moments.
Anyone remember Nyssa, Tegan and Adric? Talk about rubbish acting and boring characters, but at least the stories were mostly good.

SkylightAndChandelier · 04/01/2021 16:23

Arghh.. they're talking about Richard Ayoade or Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum) as the next Doctor.

I'm not sure I get either of those. If they're looking for a young black british woman, I could definitely get on board with Susan Wokoma though, I can definitely see her as The Doctor

merrymouse · 04/01/2021 16:32

I think any doctor would work with good writing, but there has to be a reason to make she series that goes beyond 'this actor was available and ticked the correct boxes, and this show runner agreed to the contractual terms.'

BuntingEllacott · 04/01/2021 16:35

Frankly, I've long wanted them to change the melanin content of the Doctor before the sex. Waaaay back before Smith was cast, I wanted Paterson Joseph.

SkylightAndChandelier · 04/01/2021 16:37

I wanted Paterson Joseph

Oh yes, he would have been good - I remember watching Neverwhere and thinking that he could play a character with the right attitude/depth

He was brilliant in Neverwhere
