I couldn't see a thread on this. An interview with JKR for Good Housekeeping for January.

I’ll be buying a copy (for the first time ever)

oneglassandpuzzled · 11/12/2020 09:24

JKR is a brave and classy woman.

SirSamuelVimes · 11/12/2020 13:14

Got my copy.

BraveBananaBadge · 11/12/2020 13:27

I support JKR but never read any of her books, so got DS a copy of the Ikabog for his birthday. Am loving reading it to him and the book itself is absolutely gorgeous. I’m surprised how much of a convert I am!

SirSamuelVimes · 11/12/2020 13:32

I have bought the Ickabog for DD for Xmas. It is such a beautiful book! Can't wait to read it with her.

PopperUppleton · 11/12/2020 13:43

I might buy the Ickabog for me as I've run out of Strike books 😁

YouNoob · 11/12/2020 13:43

@BrandoraPaithwaite

Well done JKR.

Mermaids have been invited to my workplace next week to run an information session about being trans allies in schools and at work. I am going to attend but I'm dreading it.

Oh no. How woke is your workplace? Are you able to speak up without consequences at all? Do you want to speak up? Can you call in sick? (I know someone who did just that because they didn't want a day of training with mermaids)

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 11/12/2020 14:16

Bought my copy today too. I think I'm going to subscribe because I do actually like this magazine but £5.99 per copy is a bit steep!

stumbledin · 11/12/2020 14:41

If you google JKR and Good Housekeeping it seems they have been supporters (fans) of her for some years. So really good to know they are sticking by her.

Can I ask a favour? My eye sight isn't great and I couldn't read the images of the article posted at the start of the thread.

Any chance someone with a copy could do some images - not sure how long the article is so realise this could turn out to be quite a few, to get all of it in with large text. But not to worry if you cant.

I hope GH keep a note of any increase is sales this month!

Jux · 11/12/2020 15:15

Looks like it's time for me to buy another Galbraith.....

I bought the first one when there was the hoohaa about the latest, and then bought the second just to consolidate my solidarity. I'll buy the third now.

SirSamuelVimes · 11/12/2020 16:08

Jux I loved the third one but it's really quite disturbing! I'm waiting to see if I get Troubled Blood for Xmas, if not I'll buy it myself as a new year's present (which is a thing I've made up to justify buying the book).

YouNoob · 11/12/2020 16:14

Troubled Blood is so, so good. I felt quite bereft when I finished. I heard a rumour that she has finished writing her next one! Don't know if it's true.

Grellbunt · 11/12/2020 16:26

Check if your library has it as an e-Magazine?

MsNeis · 11/12/2020 17:57

@thirdfiddle

Not sure i can bring myself to read good housekeeping even for JKR. Not my thing.

One of the best aspects of her support for women has been the consistency. She doesn't speak often but at regular intervals up she pops. Careful, considered, compassionate and utterly reasonable every time. Making clear she still hasn't been intimidated, and won't go away.

She's been a real star this year. For women, for children in lockdown, I've been enjoying Strike too, and her charity work as ever. Respect.

My thoughts exactly.

The consistency is what makes her more reliable, because it shows that it's not a polemicist but a rather intelligent and committed person.

TheBuffster · 11/12/2020 21:56

It's interesting about the English teacher. I have an English degree and being analytical and using evidence was kind of a thing. Worrying that my degree has been cheapened since then. I'd be torn on the teacher front- it's horrible when parents jump on teachers but that really is beyond the pale. I'd perhaps have a nice chat with them, something like " DC thinks jk Rowling is transphobic, is very disappointed as she's her heroine, I told her she must have misheard you or simplified it as it's obviously such a nuanced argument. Then I'd probably mention how I admire her for speaking out about her own abuse and worries for female victims of rape at refuges.
But in reality probably wouldn't say any of that as I am a wimp and despite being a leftie am frightened of woke ideology and followers.Blush

There was a professor some years ago who was a holocaust denier, I forget his name. Anyway, I think he might have been asked to reconsider his position but I don''t think he was actually expected to do so. He didn't anyway. I don't think he was no platformed, and I can't remember him being subjected to "die in a grease fire" or "I'll rape your daughters" type of stuff either.

Anyone remember more clearly than I do? I think the parallels are interesting.

Beamur · 12/12/2020 00:37

Well, the outcome of the Keira Bell case and the just published Tavistock report rather confirm that JKR was bang on the money. It seems that the courts agree it's unethical and the data suggests that puberty blockers lead almost inevitably to a pathway of cross sex hormones, reduced height and bone density and ultimately infertility for many. An experimental treatment on children not old enough to give informed consent.

Beamur · 12/12/2020 00:39

Jux
Do you mean David Irvine?

Beamur · 12/12/2020 00:42

Sorry, Irving.

Coyoacan · 12/12/2020 01:00

I don't know about nowadays but I'm nearing seventy and a school friend of mine who wasn't into reading at all (she used Coles Notes for A levels instead of reading the book) ended up as a joint Gym/English teacher.

David Irving. He was persona non grata in a few countries, but invited to speak a the Oxford Union on free speech in 2007.

TheBuffster · 12/12/2020 11:52

Serves me right for choosing a degree where I sit on my fanny reading books all day lol! (To paraphrase Roald Dahl!)

Hulo · 12/12/2020 12:18

GH. A magazine dedicated to the parts of womanhood we don't see our trans friends wishing to emulate...the endless routine of cooking the daily meal and trying to think of something different to make that the kids will eat, doing the cleaning (how to clean a mattress is in this month), keeping the kids entertained.....getting older.

Not surprised they're more real

StanfordPines · 12/12/2020 12:25

I’ve got Readly which is £7.99 a month but you get a huge number of magazines, including GH.
