I couldn't see a thread on this. An interview with JKR for Good Housekeeping for January.

My dd has just told me that her yr8 English teacher told her class that JK Rowling was transphobic and that her new book says not nice things about transgender people

I would definitely speak to the school about this. That teacher needs to keep her political and personal opinions to themself and not tell lies to children.

scrappydappydoo · 10/12/2020 19:52

Thank you - I shall write a tactful email.

Delphinium20 · 10/12/2020 20:09

JKR has such compassion...after public death threats, she had the means to go underground, instead, she responds w/ dignity, grace and thinking first of women and children.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 10/12/2020 20:12

I will be buying this too.
I really like GH - terrible title but a decent quality magazine. Don't be put off by the old lady title.

StillAHarpie · 10/12/2020 20:25

It’s a good outlet for JKR to be talking to, too many people who would not support the twitter trans activist view are unaware of the issue. The more people outside of twitter she reaches the better.

GivesNoFox · 10/12/2020 20:39

A trans acquaintance I have on FB was whining about this article the other day and was wondering if GH had a 'Terf' amongst the higher ups to give JKR a platform in their mag.😁

Mind you, this person also used the whole 'sex is more complicated than male/female' argument a while ago so their opinions arent exactly grounded.

@scrappydappydoo

Can I just hijack and ask a question? My dd has just told me that her yr8 English teacher told her class that JK Rowling was transphobic and that her new book says not nice things about transgender people. I’m cross that she is sharing this opinion in class and had a chat with my dd about not believing everything you read on social media but I’m wondering if I should leave it there and not feed the fire or bring it up with the school? Any thoughts?
That's appalling, I'm a bit of a wimp at sticking my head above the parapet but I wouldn't be able to let that lie. I would send a calm email, sticking to the facts of what JKRhas actually said.
WiseOwlWan · 10/12/2020 21:30

@Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons

One of the best aspects of her support for women has been the consistency. She doesn't speak often but at regular intervals up she pops. Careful, considered, compassionate and utterly reasonable every time. Making clear she still hasn't been intimidated, and won't go away. Yes! It feels like she’s running a very careful PR campaign (but for women rather than herself) She’s a class act
She sure is.

Wine to JKR

I'd be raising it with the school as it's quite libellous and toxic.
Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 10/12/2020 22:43

@scrappydappydoo most definitely raise this with the school. It goes against the Teachers' Standards. The teacher should at least be made to apologise to the class and withdraw the comments. A grievance could result from this, it's appalling behaviour from a professional!

When my DC were that age PEE was the in-thing in Literature / comprehension. Is it still going?
PEE = point, evidence, explain.
We understand the the English teacher's Point. Ask her "where is her Evidence?" Then ask her to Explain how her Evidence supports the Point. Then watch her squirm.

Did you ask in what way is it more complicated? IME people who say this can never actually provide a straight answer.

Amazing woman - thank you Jo.

Forgivenandsetfree · 11/12/2020 06:52

I'm pleased she's sticking with it!

moglovesmincepies · 11/12/2020 07:06

Thank op will definitely be buying this today and probably subscribing too.

SpudulikaSlob · 11/12/2020 07:26

Great news.
The quote above about her speaking out despite "pleas for her to reconsider" is utterly ridiculous though, no man would ever be asked to reconsider his stance. In fact, I can't think of another subject that one would be pleased with to reconsider, either they would be pilloried for saying something actually hateful, or noted for their opinion.

It sounds like ^She still won't be kind!*

Barmbraic · 11/12/2020 07:32

You left out "stamps foot" at the end there.

YouNoob · 11/12/2020 07:44

JKR is amazing. Her humour, grace and compassion has been spotlighted this year.

I bought and read the Strike books and currently reading The Ickabog with DC, which we are thoroughly enjoying.

GH will get a lot of extra readers for this issue, I should think.

SirSamuelVimes · 11/12/2020 07:49

I'm off out to the shops today. Will pick up a copy of good housekeeping (in spite of my slatternly ways).

JKR is still an absolute class act. Wine

BrandoraPaithwaite · 11/12/2020 08:01

Well done JKR.

Mermaids have been invited to my workplace next week to run an information session about being trans allies in schools and at work. I am going to attend but I'm dreading it.

mollscroll · 11/12/2020 08:03

Yes there needs to be a companion magazine called Bad Housekeeping Grin.

I do enjoy GH (though not the lists of best oven cleaner and best kettle). I never found a way back to Red and Elle and all that after a certain age so now I’m GH and Woman & Home and eyeing up The Lady in a way that worries even me.

I would mention this at the school. It is wrong apart from anything else.
SpudulikaSlob · 11/12/2020 09:15

I've just asked DH to pick up a copy as he's out today. He said "Is that a magazine?"

We're more of a Bad Housekeeping family too Grin
