“If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion...”
Abigail Adams 1744

Here at Conservative Womens Pledge we told you we intended to redouble our efforts to win back single sex spaces for women and girls; well here is what we are doing!

Until today there was not a single group in the Conservative Party who centred the rights of women, so we are proud to announce the launch of 'Conservatives For Women'.

We are a group of Conservative Party members who will campaign within the public sphere, and in the heart of Westminster, to raise awareness of issues which threaten the safety and dignity of women. We will defend science, reason, free speech and the need for open, tolerant debate that underpins our society.

Come and join us! You don't have to be a party member or even a voter, you just have to care about the rights of women and girls.
conservativesforwomen.org/join-us

Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/CforWomenUK

and Facebook: www.facebook.com/Conservatives-For-Women-104300591505734

We are working cross party with all the other political women's groups to inform and influence our peers and MPs.

Oh, you asked specifically where CfW are asking for money.

There's a Donate button on their website, and they're selling postcards.

Actually I've just re-read that page: sorry, I misread it as I was trying to get through all the material.

I thought they were selling the cards and flowers as a "we'll send it for you" service, but in reality they're posting you a pack of cards.

So that's your postal address required, then, which can be cross-referenced with the electoral roll.

HecatesCatsInXmasHats · 06/12/2020 13:31

I think the Baroness' group will be cross-party and specifically for women's issues/rights

Very much looking forward to hearing more from the Baroness about her plans.

PerkingFaintly · 06/12/2020 13:34

Oh, and now at the bottom of the CfW homepage is an option so you can make choices about some Twitter tracking and some Facebook tracking. Good, this is better practice.

I don't know if that was always there (I was looking at other pages), or whether that's just appeared.

It's nice to have such responsive readers if the latter.Grin

Floisme · 06/12/2020 13:41

Thanks Perking I will read and digest!

ConservativesForWomen · 06/12/2020 15:12

Thank you again to those of you who have supported us and wished us well, particularly to @KeepPrisonsSingleSex who has confirmed that we worked with them, and we will continue to support their campaign.

As LeftyWoman said, we are indeed “just a bunch of Conservative women members trying to do some good by holding the government's feet to the fire.”

I will say once more, nobody is forcing any single one of you to support us, sign up for our newsletter, follow us on Twitter or Facebook or even to look at our website. Mumsnet has been so valuable to many of us in our group, as it has to women all across the political spectrum, and I thought some of you would like to know we exist. We have asked for nobody's personal details or money. Anyone is free to sign up to our newsletter under any name and email address you choose to use, and the idea that we will be cross checking you and following you across social media is risible, given we all have jobs and families and are doing this in what little spare time we have and the fact we wouldn't have a clue how to do this. We have set this up in our own time and with our own money because we think it's important enough to deserve that.

Those of you who are not interested, feel free to scroll on by. I will also repeat, we are FOR women and children's rights, as are ALL the other political groups we work with.

Most of what we do, and have been doing (our group sprang from the Conservative Women's Pledge petition, started over a year ago) does NOT take place on social media, it takes place in private conversations with our own MPs; one of our aims is to help people be more confident about engaging with their MPs, because we know many people just don't know where to start.
Many Conservative party members don't use social media, so we want to find ways to reach out to them to let them know what is happening to women (and children).

Those of you who are politically active know that party officials SHOULD be listening to their members, and we intend to make our voices heard within the party, so the more of us the better, which is why we set up the website to give people somewhere to engage with us; as of today none of us have been expelled from the party so we feel there is hope, and the atmosphere has certainly changed in the last year. What we are doing is not something we expect every women in the world to agree with, heaven knows we are used to that, as women we have been constantly told we are 'womaning' wrong, or 'feministing' wrong. But it is what WE are doing, and those who want to criticise, why not share what YOU are doing?

So what 'real world touchpoint' are we supposed to provide? Our photos? Our names and addresses? None of that would prove anything, and people who want to find fault with us will continue to do so. Facebook are already making our page difficult to find and no doubt Twitter will get around to shadowbanning us for weeks, which is what they did to CUPWomensPledge's account. The fact anyone thinks we have any control over these social media giants is mind-boggling.

P.S. If anyone has found a way to send postcards out to people without having their address we are all ears.

P.P.S. Thanks from the bottom of our heart to those who have sent supportive messages and supported us on this thread; we are all exhausted from getting this set up and your messages and posts have really helped.

More power to your elbow OP

Abitofalark · 06/12/2020 16:17

Thank you, OP. Not to add to your workload but at some point when you have time, perhaps in a newsletter, it'd be interesting to hear about any other groups you work or have contacts with, in Parliament or outside, including media, print or broadcast. APPGs and Select Committees seem to be key inside but also problematic, even the one(s) dedicated to Women.

And media similarly. Have you any toeholds or routes into influence there? Do they have some sort of collective agreement or stance on the trans topic and how they will write about it? They seem to have adopted certain uses of language conforming to an agenda and use terms such as 'trans children' as if you can categorise them as such, rather than just children; and 'born in the wrong body', as if that is a fact and a reality rather than a notion or a feeling or an expression whose meaning is elusive.

So much that becomes muddled and goes wrong, ending up with absurd complications, contradictions and impossibilities, starts with language and its misuse, which is taken up and perpetuated without ever being questioned; it needs to be challenged.

ChattyLion · 06/12/2020 16:23

OP could you say any more about the position on GRA with this group?

Gingernaut · 06/12/2020 16:54

conservativesforwomen.org/ the website contains template letters for sex declaration on the 2021 Census and for keeping prisons single sex.

I'm disturbed to say I approve. I agree with Conservatives. Good grief.

Maduixa · 06/12/2020 18:11

Thank you for the info, ConservativesforWomen and GingerJonesy. I’m curious - will your group stay focused on Westminster or do you or any affiliate groups have plans to tackle the devolved administrations and parliaments/assemblies as well?

ConservativesForWomen · 07/12/2020 15:49

We are currently formulating our position on the GRA and will publish it on our website as part of our FAQs once it is ready.

Most of what we do, and have been doing (our group sprang from the Conservative Women's Pledge petition, started over a year ago) does NOT take place on social media, it takes place in private conversations with our own MPs

So what are your positions on abortion, lone parent's benefits, gender pay gap reporting and same sex marriage?

It seems only fair that people who sign up know what you are lobbying these MPs about in the name of women's rights.

2Rebecca · 07/12/2020 16:43

I think working within the CWO is also important.

ConservativesForWomen · 07/12/2020 18:35

@Maduixa

Initially our main focus will be on Westminster, which does of course have MPs and peers from all of the home nations. We would welcome affiliate groups if they want to focus on their particular home nation.

Currently we do work with other women's groups in Scotland and Wales on an informal basis and have done for some time, supporting and amplifying each other's work.

@2Rebecca

I think working within the CWO is also important.
People involved with our group, and with other women's groups, have made repeated attempts to engage with CWO to no effect. Our door remains open.

I am not UK based but after Amnesty Ireland signing a letter to say they wanted political reaper station removed from gender critical women I support anyone in politics standing up for women’s sex based rights. The more noise in UK politics the more likely it is to be heard across the Irish Sea.

20shadesofgreen · 07/12/2020 19:06

Representation even

Fgs these women are members/supporters of a mainstream UK party, currently the party of government. Why on earth would you be "disturbed" that you agree with them?

I think 'reaper stations' goes quite well with Amnesty Ireland's attitude...
Chamonixshoopshoop · 07/12/2020 20:39

Fantastic. Finally someone sticking up for us! Womens sport is a huge one for me. It's slowly being eroded by transwomen who lived as men all their life, then suddenly decide to be a female weight lifter for e.gm and break our records.
This might seem like a minor issue, but female professionals, who rely on winning competitions for money are missing out.
I also played a match recently against a transwoman and she was clearly the tallest, strongest, most able on the pitch.
Just to add another thing to the already extensive list!

I know it's the mirror but this irritated me. And I wasn't even one of the women in prison competing.

TrailingLobelias · 07/12/2020 21:34

We need a party on the economic left with family values. I am a big fan of Joti Brar for her brilliant political synthesis.

Contrary to what the fake left says, most women have fewer children than they want. Making feminism all about abortion and careers means feminism doesn't represent normal women anymore. We want decent housing, decent working conditions and decent childcare so we can be mothers and workers if we want.

For the record any story in the tabloids about a prisoner that comes from an anonymous prison source is very likely to be untrue, as we saw with Ian Huntley. Anonymous sources are considered the lowest possible standard of journalistic evidence, and as prisoners cannot sue then the tabloids know they can get away with writing whatever they like about them. This story has very likely come from a recently released ex prisoner, or a screw with a grudge, who's been given a few quid to tell a tabloid hack exactly what they wanted to hear.

Anxioustoddler · 07/12/2020 21:41

Lol a group who vote for a government who have made many women’s lives unbearable with austerity, benefit cuts and more yet claims they care about women.

What they mean is they care about privileged white women.

Pull the other one.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 07/12/2020 22:02

This is great.
Happy to be involved with this and the Baronesses party when it comes out.
They will strengthen and not diminish each other.

I'm done with the left. I may be slightly left leaning on economics, but the /woke/socialism crazy town combined with a disturbing authoritarianism has made me an unexpected Tory.
The treatment of women on this issue just underlines the whole rotten core on the left as it is now.
