Should I put my head above the parapet?

I've been a lurker on MN and these boards for a long time, I've been wary of posting because I am not as knowledgeable as most people here, but here goes.

The TV was on Good Morning Britain this morning (background noise rather than anything else) and the subject of a Football announcer being suspended for using the term HANDBAGS OUT, one of the "woke" talking heads was someone called Rebecca who suggested the word HYSTRIONICS instead! Really? I'm trying really hard not to use any variation of hysteria because I really think it's a dismissive term.

I have an email to GMB sitting in my draft folder about this, am I being ott if I send it?

Be gentle with me, is this a battle worth fighting?

Histrionics has nothing to do with hysteria, OP! It derives from French histronique, and means like an actor. We would say “over dramatic” or “a bit thespian”.
Personally I like the handbag comment as it is obviously a joke, and not just women carry handbags. I never do, but my late father in law always did.

SallySaidHi · 01/12/2020 09:35

Histrionics is an appropriate term. The handbag comment was fine in my opinion, and even if someone took offence surely the appropriate action to take would be to tell the commentator not to use that term again, not cancel him. This cancel culture is so OTT.

Colourarc · 01/12/2020 09:43

Thanks, I didn't have a problem with the handbag comment particularly but looking at the etymology it looked like it was all similar basis.

Email deleted, see told you I wasn't as knowledgeable as the rest of you!

I'll go back to lurking

PearPickingPorky · 01/12/2020 09:48

I also would have thought histrionics and hysteria were connected, OP - every day's a school day on FWR!

Datun · 01/12/2020 09:48

I'll go back to lurking

Don't go back to lurking! I had no idea of the etymology of the word histrionics.

And until I acquired late onset feminism (it's highly contagious), due to these boards, even the word hysterical hadn't resonated as particularly sexist.

Of course, now it's like a klaxon. That is the beauty of the shared information you get here.

7Days · 01/12/2020 09:51

That's very interesting about the histrionics- I'd assumed it was connected to 'hysterical'too.

Thanks for asking the question OP!

@Colourarc don't go back to lurking, this board needs all voices. What @Datun said.

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 01/12/2020 09:58

Absolutely don’t go back to lurking - the more voices the merrier!

Colourarc · 01/12/2020 10:01

Thanks for your comments, I love the term late onset feminism.

Welcome to the dark side Colourarc Thanks
I only delurked after years on here a few months ago, but no one's told me to fuck off yet so I keep posting and am getting braver as time goes on.

YouNoob · 01/12/2020 10:21

Late onset feminism is perfect.

OP, don't go back to lurking. I am in awe and plenty intimidated by everyone's knowledge and eloquence on these boards. I feel like the slightly stupid one who doesn't always get it, especially if it gets academic. But you know what, that doesn't matter. I contribute when I can (I'm a frequent name changer) and ask questions when I don't understand.

StellaAndCrow · 01/12/2020 12:39

I also didn't know that about histrionics, and would have thought it shared a root with hysteria. I've only just noticed that one is spelled with an I and one with a y. So you've improved my spelling too OP. So please don't go!

persistentwoman · 01/12/2020 12:40

Great thread OP.

I would say not. And as histrionics is not anything to do with hysteria I would be careful not to look poorly educated.

Read the room first. Hmm (there's always one)

Babdoc · 01/12/2020 13:01

Confession - I had to look histrionics up before posting that explanation! I just had doubts due to the different spelling so needed to check.
OP, please don’t just lurk - I was only trying to save you potential embarrassment if you had gone ahead with your email. Good for you for wanting to get involved, and to challenge something you felt might be anti feminist. All feminists whatever their level of knowledge are welcome on fwr. I learn lots from the regulars like Datun.

@persistentwoman ...Thank you .

takes a bow : ties hair back with it

Colourarc · 01/12/2020 14:32

Babdoc thanks for the info, I was spelling it with a Y not an I when I was looking it up and the reason I posted here was to check my interpretation.
I'm glad to know the difference now and you never know I might post a little more seeing as how this outing hasn't gone too badly for me!

MrsSteveMcDonald · 01/12/2020 14:41

I mostly lurk due to not really having anything interesting to say but it's always good to have new people posting on here.

unwashedanddazed · 01/12/2020 15:46

I mostly lurk and have done for many years. I don't post if someone else has already made the point that I would have. On this occasion I'm making the same point as others just to assure you there's loads of us just like you - enjoy FWR greatly but a bit maybe more of a listener than a debater. That said I appreciate every word written on these forums. Even the ones I disagree with!

JKRismyhero · 01/12/2020 21:44

What would we class as late-onset ?

I have postnatal feminism haha.

HubertHerbert · 01/12/2020 22:21

Another enjoyer of late onset feminism Grin
