Times Article on All Women Shortlists and SNP rule breaking

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 22/10/2020 06:13

"Mridul Wadhwa, a trans rights activist who has no gender recognition certificate, appeared at a Stirling hustings, prompting allegations that SNP headquarters was ruling “by diktat” and had broken the Sex Discrimination (Election Candidates) Act, 2002, designed to promote all-women shortlists."

Also links to the FWS Judicial Review:
"The SNP government already faces a legal challenge amid growing anger that a man who identifies as a member of the opposite sex will be legally recognised as a woman under the Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scotland) Act 2018.

For Women Scotland, the campaign group granted a judicial review of the 2018 legislation, said the Stirling case showed the SNP was “playing fast and loose with women’s rights and the very definition of what it is to be a woman”."

Afraid I don't have share token!

A really good article. Hope the SNP start to take a good look at what is going on, or do they think the women's votes don't matter

persistentwoman · 22/10/2020 07:30

I think that the SNP (& all political parties) think that women as a group don't really matter. They believe that women are passive and won't protest as born males start taking our jobs, awards, team places, funding and the rest. They believe that women will accept what is doled out to us.
I think they're in for shock as the implications of all this for women and children become more and more evident and women speak out in increasing numbers.

happydappy2 · 22/10/2020 08:43

Always interesting to see how long comments take to be approved, on any articles like this in The Times.

I'd be surprised if that much thought went into it. I'm not sure it ever even occurred to them.

This is what the males want, this is what they must have. No need to consult the support humans, we'll be happy to budge up.

I love the quote: "To then have a biological man rock up and say, ‘I’m a woman and I’m going to represent you’, well, the answer is, ‘No. You can’t possibly’."

ApplePlumPie · 22/10/2020 08:58

This is really good news.

And anyone else thinking that “No. You can’t possibly. “Would look great on some TShirts and stickers??

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2020 09:00

^This

It's almost as if they forget that a) women are incapable of independent thought, and b) that women can vote.

Of course, as alluded to in the article, because of covid there are no proper hustings just online ones that are tightly moderated and ask only pre-approved questions.

wellbehavedwomen · 22/10/2020 09:00

A biological male who thinks it's hilarious to secure a job in a rape crisis centre, when it advertised for female only staff, by not mentioning being male. This is seen as someone suitable to represent women politically?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2020 09:06

Mridul Wadhwa, a trans rights activist who has no gender recognition certificate

Also, I'm fairly sure the groundwork in the Jennifer James case established that TW shouldn't be on AWS regardless of GRC or not?

Sexnotgender · 22/10/2020 09:10

Great article. That’s the same person who got a job in a rape crisis centre without declaring they were male wasn’t it?

Igneococcus · 22/10/2020 09:13

There is another article about the husting in Dumbarton which is about procedure rather but it is where Caroline McAllister was barred from standing:

This is all so dodgy. It almost seems as if the SNP is taking advantage of covid to undermine party democracy.

teawamutu · 22/10/2020 09:18

I gathered from Twitter that Rhiannon Spear was not best pleased with how Argyll and Bute going, but couldn't find anything more. Anyone know anything?

Igneococcus · 22/10/2020 09:19

I have to admit that I read that article twice and I don't think I entirely understood it (having taken two batches of migraine medication probably doesn't help). I'm in A&B and I'm curious to see who gets selected in A&B and I hope whoever it is comes canvassing.

Caeruleanblue · 22/10/2020 09:19

Ilive in Scotland and feel the SNP, or some of them are more interested in waving their inclusive flag on the World Stage than actually being honest and doing what the country needs.

Sexnotgender · 22/10/2020 09:19

I thought so. Thanks @ItsAllGoingToBeFine.

Not content with pushing women’s boundaries when they’re at their most vulnerable now taking spaces exclusively reserved for women to increase our political representation.

Excellent. No entitlement at all there.

IwishNothingButTheBestForYou2 · 22/10/2020 09:26

From OP:

"The SNP government already faces a legal challenge amid growing anger that a man who identifies as a member of the opposite sex will be legally recognised as a woman under the Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scotland) Act 2018."

I like that description. Is it a way of describing someone that is allowed on this site?

Procrastinator3 · 22/10/2020 09:31

The Times deleted my question asking whether this was the person who ran a rape crisis centre and had not disclosed that they were a man on interview. I also said that many women would not use a rape crisis centre if they might meet a man.

Mine too! What policy would that breach?
happydappy2 · 22/10/2020 09:55

mine too was deleted-why is the truth being censored?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2020 09:58

I wouldn't worry too much. Hopefully the article will cause some people to Google and it will pop up them.

(Perhaps the Times are also going to run a story on that aspect of the individual and don't want it breaking in the comments section?)

Sexnotgender · 22/10/2020 10:02

The policy breached? I’d assume hurting men’s feelings? Or speaking the truth. Both are forbidden.

gardenbird48 · 22/10/2020 10:05

I made a similar comment and that has gone as well. My Times app on my phone is showing that earlier (first thing this morning) there were 30+ comments and when I looked just now it is showing 25. Jo March has been forced to censor as well!
