Non-binary advert for Sainsbury’s Tu

SabrinasCat · 17/10/2020 09:31

I’m possibly a bit late to the party on this one but has anyone seen the Sainsbury’s/Tu advert in Stylist Magazine from 12 days ago?

Tessa identifies as non-binary and refers to themselves in the third person. To fully embrace their new non-binary identity they have rejected flowery dresses in favour of a pair of jeans, a t-shirt and a blue waisted-belt coat (all available from Tu, in the women’s section).

That’s all fine. Fair enough. Tessa can wear exactly what Tessa wants, and to be fair Tessa looks great.

But I do wonder how someone like Tessa (who identifies as neither a man or a woman) would be categorised in Sainsbury’s gender pay gap report. At Sainsbury’s men are currently paid 10% more than women. Only 33% of top roles are filled by women, and (if I have understood the poorly presented figures correctly) men receive a bonus that is almost 60% higher than women’s bonuses.

Nice blue coat though.

Jumping on the bandwagon with no thought process involved.
How many of us middle aged and older women like me, have short hair, wear shirts and jumpers, trousers boots/ trainers for reasons of comfort and practicality?
Not once in my 60 years have I wondered about my gender identity.
I have spent time raising awareness of the discrimination against women though, back in my youth. Even marched a bit back in the 70s.
I feel sad and frustrated at the way things are going.

Corporate woo. The capitalists love all this gender stuff, wonder why. Easy to market, I suppose. Stick a bit of glitter on it or a rainbow and market it as LGBTQ. To non binary it - do nothing at all.

CaraDuneRedux · 17/10/2020 09:57

There was a thread on this a while back. I have to admit, looking at the photos I cannot for the life of me see how Tessa's style differs in any way from your average (reasonably well turned out) mum at the primary school gates.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/10/2020 09:58

Tessa can identify as anything they wish and dress in a way they are most comfortable, but their sex is obvious and I suspect no one these days would bat a fucking eyelid or give a second glance at any other female who dressed the way tessa does.

There is nothing new or special about any of those clothes.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 17/10/2020 10:02

There's a bigger thread about this somewhere from a week or two back. Most of us were mystified at what was so special about wearing totally normal clothes (and still from the women's section at that...)!

That's a really good point.

It was shops that reinforced all the 'pink for girls, blue for boys, you'd better buy two of the same thing if you want to get it right' malarkey.

There is no way they're not going to jump on the idea that they can now invent a third lot of shit for people to have to buy. And claim it's progressive.

Bearsinmotion · 17/10/2020 10:11

I think that is so sad. I am currently wearing a flowery dress because:

  1. my jeans and jumper are in the washing basket
  2. I am hoping to go outdoor swimming later and it’s easy to put on quickly while I get back to the warm and
  3. it was handy

Nothing to do with gender identity.

This!

Except that now all the 'progressive types' who were critical of the girls and boys division of the same product, because that was the 'correct' virtue signally thing to do at the time, will be applauding this.

Exactly. It's a racket.

Marketing is all about persuading people that they are special even though they embrace mass produced products and stereotypes. Non binaries are doing what millions of others do but claiming special status.

you are correct, it is a perfect match.

Awning10 · 17/10/2020 11:32

Looks like I've been a non-binary trailblazer for the past 40 years then!

JellySlice · 17/10/2020 11:41

OFFS! If you don't want to wear a dress, don't wear it. If you don't want to wear flower patterns, don't wear them. So your mum tried to turn you into a lady. So what? So did mine. It didn't work. Yes, it's upsetting to get the subliminal message that you are not good enough from those who are supposed to cherish you.

Wear what you want. But recognise that you are not dressed any differently to millions of women. To millions of women, feminine or masculine, who chose not to wear flowery frocks and high heels.

drspouse · 17/10/2020 11:59

refers to themselves in the third person.
Is Tessa the Queen or a toddler (or the parent of one), those being the main people who refer to themselves in the third person?
"One is visiting a hospital today"
"Jack want biccy"
"Hang on sweetie, mummy's busy right now, she'll get you a biscuit in a minute".

DidoLamenting · 17/10/2020 12:02

That's unfair.

The idea that Tessa is wearing anything groundbreaking is nonsense but the third person paragraphs are clearly an authorial introduction by the writer of the article. When Tessa is speaking she uses "I"

Vermeil · 17/10/2020 12:05

The previous thread was mine 😁
It’s popped up again on my FB feed over the last couple of days, and I’m also getting another one going on about ‘modest’ dressing, which also irritates the tits off me. It’s ‘conservative religious’ dress, not modest. There’s nothing immodest about a woman’s bare elbows or a bit of ankle. 😠

ReneeRol · 17/10/2020 12:06

So we're all non binary or men if we don't like flowery dresses? Ffs.

I don't care when they're doing their own thing, I object when they're demanding to control our language and perception to fit their delusions.

drspouse · 17/10/2020 12:11

@DidoLamenting sorry, I CBA to read an article about supermarket t-shirts so I went off the previous post!

Bingbongbinglybong · 17/10/2020 12:26

Let me get this right - non-binary people can't enjoy wearing floral patterns?

Shit. After over 40 years of being utterly convinced I'm through and through a girl, it turns out my wardrobe screams non- binary.

I'd better go and have an identity crisis. I wonder what my husband will say. I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm a girl.

GratedExposure · 17/10/2020 12:48

But... but... I thought gender identity had nothing to do with clothes preference now?

GratedExposure · 17/10/2020 12:51

(as you're all saying, this sounds like countless of us oldies, without the labels. I worse pinstripe suit trousers and doc marten boots to my "high school prom". It was a total non-event and, strangely, I remained entirely female throughout)

DidoLamenting · 17/10/2020 12:51

It amused me that one of the last posts on your thread was "I know her Mam"

A bit like the Scottish takedown "I kent his faither"

Swallowzandamazons · 17/10/2020 12:53

My cat's more "non binary" than Tessa. He's a he, but he's had his bollocks cut off. Where's his prize?

JellySlice · 17/10/2020 12:55

Oh look, a woman's shirt. Or is it a feminine shirt? Hang on a sec, it's cut for a flat-chested, broad-shouldered, slim-hipped body - doesn't that make it a man's shirt? But it's got flowers!

Ah ha, it must be a non-binary shirt.

EmbarrassingMama · 17/10/2020 12:57

So jeans and a T-shirt then. The basic uniform of any man and woman out there. Yawn.
