Due to ‘transphobia’ natch.

His blog includes the whole correspondence but I couldn’t copy the link.

It's a great episode- I'd have to watch it again to asses how insensitive the trans character's depiction is. As I remember it, Matt Berry's character comes off worst in every way. Was it similar to the artistic/autistic confusion in another episode? I may need to watch the lot again. Pretty sure we have the box set.

The internet in a box was inspired, and will live on forever in my inner world view.

Lisz · 09/10/2020 17:10

It's a true shame that and all, because they were literally kicking his door down to make more tv shows for them.

aliasundercover · 09/10/2020 17:12

I don’t think this is a conversation you can fully participate in

Blimey! Are you cancelling me now?

What ‘standard’ has this breached then? Who decided? Who was consulted?

AnyOldPrion · 09/10/2020 17:19

much of the comedy arises from the fact that, as the Telegraph article points out, the trans woman fights like a man.

Also behaves like a sterotypical man... which is why Douglas is entranced! Guess suggestions that transitioning doesn’t change behaviour are seen as deeply insulting!

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/10/2020 17:21

They end up in bed together very happy so where's the issue?!

Deliriumoftheendless · 09/10/2020 17:24

I actually agree with Paris Lees round the subject that transwomen have been the butt of jokes for a long time. But Graham Linehan has addressed this. If it’s been complained about enough I can see why Channel 4 have stopped broadcasting it, but I’d be interested to know if they’ve also pulled the episode of Spaced where Brian takes the gang to a performance art piece by Vulva (Davis Walliams) (one of my favourites as I too was playing a lot of Resident Evil 2 at the time and could relate) and Tim refers to Vulva with the t word slur, then “a big, fat (t word slur)” or do Simon Pegg, Jessica Stevenson and Edgar Wright get a pass?

Deathgrip · 09/10/2020 17:28

I cancelled Netflix because of “Cuties”

You cancelled Netflix because they bought the rights to a female-directed film which critiques the sexualisation of young girls?

Or because you read a DM article / online petition calling it paedo-bait?

Just curious.

OneEpisode · 09/10/2020 17:30

I was going to post about the female stereotypes in other channel 4 shows, and looked what they were broadcasting today. They start the day with a zillion episodes of “I love Raymond”. The lack of concern for the portrayal of women, vs the concern over a trans character has so depressed me so much I can’t even...

iklboo · 09/10/2020 17:32

I've never watched the programme so went on you tube to watch this clip. Why is the transwoman played by a woman not a man? If you weren't aware she was supposed to be a transwoman, ie came in at the end of the clip it just looks like a man beating up a woman.

You have to watch the whole episode, not just the clip. It's clear earlier on the character is trans - Matt Berry's character doesn't just start whaling on her out of the blue.

OneEpisode · 09/10/2020 17:36

Denholm “whales” the transwoman because Denholm is an arse.
Also I think because Glinner wanted a comedy fight scene, and put it in this episode.

@OneEpisode

Denholm “whales” the transwoman because Denholm is an arse. Also I think because Glinner wanted a comedy fight scene, and put it in this episode.
And he ends up crying over his lost love... they just want to ‘cancel’ him.

Isn’t this the ‘what’s Jen doing with the Internet?’ one?

RoyalCorgi · 09/10/2020 17:51

Why is the transwoman played by a woman not a man?

Because trans women are women of course.

OneEpisode · 09/10/2020 17:52

Fair, yes, that’s the episode. It’s very funny, and is only being withdrawn by ch 4 because of campaigning against Glinner.
The episode will be remembered by lots of Nigels and they will notice it’s missing from the series. Opportunity to explain why.

FairFriday · 09/10/2020 18:22

We have the box set. My brother bought it for us for Christmas when it came out and DS has been brought up with it. That and father ted.

Just that referring to a broadcaster pulling a single episode from rotation as 'banning' or 'cancelling' something really grinds my gears.

But that's not what they've done. They've pulled it from the All 4 archive.

Much as you may feel other people are exaggerating, you're clearly using disingenuous arguments about a different situation to underplay it. Which really grinds my gears.

I'd really like them to show old episodes of Brookie, but the fact they don't isn't because they're bowing to the anti-Scouse lobby.

That might make sense as a comparison if they'd removed the IT Crowd in its entirety, but with one episode being singled out, this is just disingenuous again.

aliasundercover · 09/10/2020 19:24

this is just disingenuous again

I'd say 'dishonest', but let's go with yours :)

FairFriday · 09/10/2020 20:05

Ch4 is just a load of nonsense these days. Seems to be broadcasting to teenagers.

Why is the transwoman played by a woman not a man?...it just looks like a man beating up a woman.

That's the joke- that she's a very attractive and feminine woman but likes very 'manly' things and fights like a macho cartoon character. Douglas Reynholm is toxic masculinity personified. It's like a childish male fantasy of what a transwoman is like.

I honestly think the internet in a box might be the best IT crowd episode ever.
