I just got my company to agree to ignore career breaks for carers

I've been working on this project for months. I argued that instead of sitting around moaning that senior women aren't applying in our male dominated field we should do something about it. As of today, a UK company that employs more than 15,000 people will add a line to every job advertisement that we encourage people that have taken a career breaks for parenting and caring to apply.

Well done! Flowers
What industry are you working in?

BitOfFun · 08/10/2020 01:20

Brilliant!

WhoseKids · 08/10/2020 01:22

Brilliant. My company runs recruitment for carers returning to work. The workplace us better for them.

ApricotandPeach · 08/10/2020 01:41

This is so encouraging, it's honestly the best thing I've read this year. Thank you and well done Thanks

I took 7 years off to raise my daughter . I have a MBA and I was just getting started. The conventional wisdom at the time was that it would take 5 years to get back to where I was. Someone must have written a widely shared article or something because numerous people told me this. I believed it and I chose to parent full time anyway.
When my daughter was about 2 I found www.womenreturners.com and watched it grow. I dropped her off at Year 3, came home and applied for 3 returnships. I got 2 interviews and a job making 25k more than where I left it.
I've moved companies now (because they tried to make me count Transwomen as women in our government required diversity statistics with no room to debate. So I left) and this is my first big move at the new company. I'm infinitely better at my job. I'm bolder and calmer and more disciplined.

Thank you, from a single parent carer! (and thanks for telling us about it, really cheered me up!)

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 08/10/2020 04:10

Congratulations. That’s such a useful and effective bit of activism. Well done you. 🍾

Quillink · 08/10/2020 05:51

A ton of talent and opportunity is wasted when returners are discounted. Thank you so much OP.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 08/10/2020 06:16

Thanks OP! I’ve returned from an unexpected two year break as a carer. It has been harder than I thought to get back into Work (but also: Covid). We need to humanise business practices, especially to help keep talented women.

iguanadonna · 08/10/2020 06:52

Whoop!

risefromyourgrave · 08/10/2020 07:08

That’s brilliant OP, we need more people like you in the world.

CaraDuneRedux · 08/10/2020 07:29

Well done OP - that's a big step in terms of changing your company's views round returners!

My modest triumph as a TU rep was to show my company how the savings in NI contributions would be greater than the admin overheads and get them to sign up to childcare vouchers.

Swiftnicola · 08/10/2020 07:34

Well done from someone who got back into their profession after ten years just due a fluke. ( And after having felt unemployable for a long time due to the break).
Although I did read your OP as being having got a Care company to stop allowing their workers from having any tea or lunch breaks.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 08/10/2020 07:35

Thanks and congratulations!

Winesalot · 08/10/2020 08:12

That is great news. And congratulations!!!

JKRforPM · 08/10/2020 08:17

Well done OP!

I will be returning to work in a few years and I’m anticipating a hard road ahead, but it’s thanks to the hard work of people like you that make it seem much less daunting.

This is what inclusion and supporting women looks like . Flowers

Kit19 · 08/10/2020 08:21

That is fantastic news :)

Would you be able to share the arguments that persuaded people to get on board with it? I’m sure it would be helpful for others in a similar position to influence company policy

IamEarthymama · 08/10/2020 08:22

Excellent work

FamilyOfAliens · 08/10/2020 08:22

To be fair, you sound awesome, OP, what with this and standing up against the diversity figures bullshit.

Gwynfluff · 08/10/2020 08:27

Brilliant!

midclegs101 · 08/10/2020 08:38

Great work OP!

wellbehavedwomen · 08/10/2020 08:41

That's wonderful. Thank you. Flowers

Dillybear · 08/10/2020 08:41

Amazing! This has really lifted my spirits! Hopefully more organisations will follow suit.
