Rupert Everett

I have seen that Rupert Everett has done an interview in the Times where he is very vocal about his views on the current trans rights moment. I don’t have access to it. Does anyone have a share token.

I know that he identified as a girl from age 6 to 14 and is very against transitioning kids as a result of this. I think he has got a lot of criticism for his brows despite it being about his own life. He also made a documentary about prostitution where he talked about his trans friend who was murdered.

Will see if I can work out how to do a share token.

And then he comes out with it. “It’s difficult to have a conversation about anything in today’s New Puritanism,” he says. He feels like “the wrong type of queen”. He feels as if “the gay movement has been completely overshadowed by the trans movement”. He cites the three gay men stabbed in Forbury Gardens in Reading in the summer – “Nobody was up in arms about anything” – and Putin’s ban on gay marriage. “Nothing! We’ve completely lost our profile. That’s as far as I’m going,” he decides, because, “I just can’t get myself cancelled at this time, at this stage. It’s not a good death. You’re part of the undead.” He’s quiet for a moment with his cappuccino.

This issue does seem to be troubling him a lot.

NoCureForLove · 03/10/2020 22:02

It should be troubling everyone.

Thank you Igneococcous that was an interesting read. I have always had a soft spot for Rupert Everett he sounds great fun but he also thinks about things deeply.

He has faced so much prejudice for being gay and it must be devastating for him to feel like this is going backwards.

whats this about the stabbing?

persistentwoman · 03/10/2020 22:21

Interesting to see the many positive comments. Sometime Times readers can be very critical but the vast majority really rate him.

Siablue · 03/10/2020 22:21

He is upset that there have been homophobic murders where gay men have been stabbed and it has not got a lot of attention in the media.

StillWeRise · 03/10/2020 22:34

well, if 3 men were murdered in homophobic attacks in 1 park I would expect it to be in the news, does anyone have a link?

C4tintherug · 03/10/2020 22:41

The 3 men were murdered in Reading, I don’t believe it was a homophobic attack, they just happened to be gay. It was a random attack. It was all over the national news at the time.

I love Rupert Everett, always have. He is of my vintage and utterly fabulous.

@StillWeRise do you live in the UK? The Forbury Gardens attack was big news at the time but I think the media played down the fact that the victims were gay. I don't know why. Maybe all will become clear when the trial happens. I don’t believe it was a random attack.

baroqueandblue · 04/10/2020 00:03

@menimen

Says you Hmm

Slightlybrwnbanana · 04/10/2020 00:06

RE isn't a voice for feminism or the trans movement, but then he wasn't trying to be was he? He was speaking, if not for himself, for gay men. As he is perfectly entitled to.

Mollscroll · 04/10/2020 00:10

I have always liked him. He’s smart and funny. Lovely Desert Island Discs. He’s a friend to women I think. And very, very beautiful.

TheVanguardSix · 04/10/2020 00:11

I adore him! His memoirs are the best I’ve ever read. Whatever he says, I’m listening!

highame · 04/10/2020 08:42

He says he cannot afford to be cancelled and therefore didn't say much. I got the feeling his sole concern was about how the gay community is being discarded for trans rights and given how much the gay community has gone through, I think he's very hacked off.

Saucery · 04/10/2020 08:59

Major teenage crush of mine, even bought his single (12 inches, natch Grin ). Talked about how his privates hung awkwardly in boxer shorts in Smash Hits, of all places.

He’s making his views known without wanting to be pigeonholed or cancelled, because the vocal Woke crowd don’t allow subtleties such as ‘Has/ had trans friends’ and ‘doesn’t agree with feminine boys and masculine girls being forced to deny their biological sex’ to coexist in one mind.

queenofknives · 04/10/2020 09:02

I've always liked Rupert Everett and I'm very sorry that he doesn't feel able to just be his fabulous self and say exactly what he thinks. He could skewer this lot with a couple of sentences and I'm sure he frequently does, in private. I think he's wrong about being cancelled too - all the BEST people get cancelled. It's not a living death, it's a badge of honour. Come on Rupert! They'll fucking have you for saying what you said anyway.

MindTheMinotaur · 04/10/2020 09:35

Like most people, I welcome someone who agrees with me. But I feel like he's been set up here, they've had a long conversation and the bits picked out for reporting around the trans debate are those he would probably be uncomfortable with.

If the gay community are concerned, I hope they find their voice soon. I've noticed one very pro-trans, outspoken gay man become much more reticent lately.

AbsintheFriends · 04/10/2020 09:40

I'm a long time fan too (He was the first actor I had a proper crush on in Another Country when I was about 11.) Caught a bit of him on Graham Norton on Friday and I think he said that he was working in America when the pandemic hit in March. If a lot of his work comes from there, he's sadly probably right to fear the cancel crew.

Gingernaut · 04/10/2020 09:40

He's a gay man, making his opinions known.

He's entitled to his opinion and, as his career suffered greatly when he came out as gay, knows how hard it is to be 'out'.
