Michael Brady - The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is due to inspect The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, Gender Identity Services GIDS

Will GIDS review questions (to get feedback from people using the service, parents, relatives, carers, and staff) use words like 'girl' or 'woman' or 'cervix haver'? or 'boy' or 'prostate owner'?

Eugh. Do they reduce us to body parts so that they don’t have to actually admit that they just don’t want to say the word women/woman? I have no issue with transmen, I have no issue with women who choose to identify as whatever they choose in any way shape or form. What I do have an issue with is the total removal of the word woman/women seemingly from every day life. I’m pregnant but apparently we don’t refer to pregnant women, mothers or breastfeeding any more- its pregnant people, birthing people, lactating people, parents, caregivers, body feeding, chest feeding etc etc etc. It drives me crackers. I understand that all of these terms are necessary but why can those who invent these terms not see that by excluding one type of person (ie women) from their language they are demonstrating the absolute opposite of the inclusivity which they seek to wave in your face. Women and people with a cervix, pregnant women or people, mothers and parents, breast, body and chest feeding. It’s not hard, it’s really really not. Stop excluding us in order to make yourselves look inclusive. We are just laughing at you and feeling desperately sorry for all those women out there who don’t understand the language they are using and so assume it is not relevant to them. Stop
It. Just stop.

I'm a woman and I don't have a cervix, had one until I was 40 but then it had to go. Smear tests are a thing of the past and I don't need any information about them.

Excellent article from Heather Brunskell Evans on this savageminds.substack.com/p/the-care-quality-commission?fbclid=IwAR1UektqVfySEApDSOWRC_hYOZY0KEJjyARrTtyzGCQPJAywg-VAtR0qMQg

" I'm a woman and I don't have a cervix, had one until I was 40 but then it had to go. Smear tests are a thing of the past and I don't need any information about them."

Not sure what your point is here but surely you don't mean to exclude other women, who might not know what a cervix is , from potentially life saving information, just because some females have had their services removed?

334bu · 28/09/2020 11:49

Cervices not services

Sure - there are loads of things applicable to women in general which don't apply to all women. Like I've never heard a post-menopausal woman complaining about menstrual products being described as being for women.
Kit19 · 28/09/2020 11:53

Nope & despite being childless due to infertility, I don’t come over all Pearl clutchy when I’m asked if I could be pregnant because I recognise that for most women it’s a perfectly legitimate question

BahHumbygge · 28/09/2020 12:00

Just like to point out that EVERYBODY has a cervix, including the cohort of prostate bearers in the population Wink ... as it also refers to the vertebrae in the neck. So rather anatomically illiterate communication on that front, as well as erasing medical issues around womanhood.

I've been following this feminist debate for some time and I stand behind you 100% with regards to the erasure of the word women.

I've not done my research but I was wondering if anyone had info on how prostate issues were worded? Do they still state "men" or have they also been reduced, similarly to women, to "those with a prostate"?

It seems that publicity relating to men's health issues still use the word men. Afaik they don't particularly make an effort to be 'inclusive' of TW though maybe there are examples? Maybe in the details?

(Great name btw.Grin)

If I am a chest feeder, menstruator and cervix haver is he a penis talker?

Kit19 · 28/09/2020 12:10

ah suddenly it all becomes clear.....

Dr Brady was appointed as the National Advisor for LGBT Health at NHS England in April 2019. In this new role Dr Brady works across NHS England and NHS Improvement, with the Government Equalities Office and a wide range of stakeholders, partner organisations and the LGBT community to address health inequalities for LGBT individuals and improve experience in the NHS. Michael is also an HIV and Sexual Health consultant at Kings College Hospital in London and the Medical Director of the Terrence Higgins Trust.

I think just 'cock' will do.
persistentwoman · 28/09/2020 12:20

Yet he is on this review? That means the odds are stacked against reaching an ethical outcome as he's clearly already evidenced his bias against women and science Sad

highame · 28/09/2020 12:22

Kit19 there is no respite, wherever you look someone making decisions about women is man with strong links to Stonewall et al.

When I feel positive, suddenly there's a slam dunk to hit me in the face.

Ffs when are these people going to start acknowledging that women exist and that we are actually very important

I was interested to read the following reply on Twitter:

What any women who’ve had their cervix removed? They remain high risk for gynae cancers & continue to fall within parameters of the cervical screening programme but no longer have any idea this applies to them. Plain language in health leads to better patient outcomes. Do better

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 28/09/2020 12:26

Thanks @ErrolTheDragon

Interesting how woke doesn't work both ways

Annasgirl · 28/09/2020 12:30

@ErrolTheDragon

Important message for people with prostates: stop reducing women to body parts. Hmm
another love for this quote Star
Aesopfable · 28/09/2020 12:32

This review - surely it should have fallen wirhin the remit of NICE to develop proper clinucal guidelines following systematic reviews of the evidence?

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2020 12:34

@anguauberwaldironfoundersson

Thanks *@ErrolTheDragon*

Interesting how woke doesn't work both ways

There's examples in the responses in the twitter thread. It's weird how all these people so very concerned about inclusivity when it comes to women's health don't seem to care about TW being included in issues relating to mens health. I'm not being facetious when I wonder if it is because of transphobia? If not then what is the explanation for the stark difference?
littlbrowndog · 28/09/2020 12:34

This is from an educated man and a privileged man

He doesnt even consider that some women don’t have his education or his privileges

We are but dross at the bottom of his shiny throne and to be given no consideration

All hail the emperor has spoken to the masses

CharlieParley · 28/09/2020 12:40

@ThePankhurstConnection

The response about letting their cat (with her cervix) know was very funny.

Why do they persist with this when it is clear from the responses that women HATE them doing it. They say it is to be inclusive but can't acknowledge how it excludes women by using dehumanising language.

It's all so tedious.

And even more importantly, why do they persist in using this language when all the research shows it excludes almost half of all women. This "inclusive" language leads to entirely avoidable deaths.

This exclusion kills women. Literally.

We have the proof of record low uptake in smear tests. What does it coincide with? The change in language that started before the current madness, which changed easily accessible language like "smear test" to "cervical cancer screening test", that uses high level terms many women cannot understand. That's where we were before they started the discriminatory use of "inclusive" language. Before they erased the word women from material about a cancer that only ever affects women.

MichelleofzeResistance · 28/09/2020 12:45

if women hate something and men love that, that's not just misogyny, it's sadism

I think it was the wonderful Jane Clare Jones who commented that certain men from this political lobby are dead ringers for Mr Murdstone from David Copperfield: the dead eyed, cold sadist, flexing a cane and telling you they're acting for the good of your soul. Charles Dickens was taking the mickey out of this in caricatures 200 years ago.

The helpful thing is at this point, it looks plain silly.

littlbrowndog · 28/09/2020 12:45

Well yes.

Everyone I know calls it smear test.

No5 cervical screening test
