A big thank you to everyone who helped promote the book!

I'm struggling with my copy. I'm not in great health and it's huge and very heavy. Not suitable for reading in bed, sadly. But on the positive side if reading it was easier I'd have finished it long since. It's very gripping.

FWRLurker · 23/09/2020 16:38

Prawn sounds like you should get the ebook version! :)

I haven’t started this series Yet - For those who have read it, should I start from the beginning or with this one.

SophocIestheFox · 23/09/2020 16:38

Is it just me, or is that Grauniad article best read through gritted teeth? 😬 😂

Siablue · 23/09/2020 16:40

Read the whole series. Each mystery is a stand alone but the relationship between Robin and Strike develops throughout the series.

I got the kindle version because I knew it was a doorstop!

jhuizinga · 23/09/2020 16:40

FWRLurcker - I would start with the first book and read in order. The developing relationship between Robin and Cormoran is one of the joys of the series.

RoyalCorgi · 23/09/2020 16:41

Is it just me, or is that Grauniad article best read through gritted teeth?

Oh yes! That's the same writer who did the piece the other day about Rowling being transphobic.

I think women are buying this to make a point. Good.

heathspeedwell · 23/09/2020 16:44

It really is a thing of wonder, I'm already counting the days till her next book is out.

Mammatino · 23/09/2020 16:46

Pay day on Friday so will start on book one and i think I need a T-shirt.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 23/09/2020 16:49

I have no touchstone for book sales figures- is 65k in 5 days a particularly impressive number?

Sparklfairy · 23/09/2020 16:52

@TerribleCustomerCervix

I had no clue either but a quick Google brought up:

To make it onto the Wall Street Journal's bestseller list, Max says a book needs at least 3,000 to 5,000 sales. As for Amazon, one investigation from Publishers Weekly estimates a book would need to sell almost 1,100 copies every day to land a spot on the site's top five.

So Shock

TerribleCustomerCervix · 23/09/2020 16:56

Fuck! Thanks Sparklfairy, that gives a bit more perspective!

Bet those book shops who have banned JKR books are feeling slightly irrelevant

SurrogacyIsModernDaySlavery · 23/09/2020 16:57

Those sorts of sales figures should make it clear there's a lot of people supporting JKR

PotholeParadise · 23/09/2020 16:59

I think the best way to contextualise the sales may be to look at Booker Prize nominees and their sales.

Table down the bottom of this article.

www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2012/oct/10/booker-prize-2012-winners-sales-data

Basically, 65,000 copies less than a week is very good, and notably it's outstripped the rate of the previous book in the series.

TeachesOfPeaches · 23/09/2020 17:00

Vile Giles Coren wrote a novel and it sold 771 copies in it's entirety.

TeachesOfPeaches · 23/09/2020 17:01

It's hilarious that twitter trolls thought they could cancel JK Rowling who could probably survive financially if she never worked a day in her life again.

SirSamuelVimes · 23/09/2020 17:01

Excellent! Not bought my copy yet as have only just read the first one (not my preferred genre, usually) and I won't be able to resist a new book if it's in front of me. Will work through the rest and then get this one for Xmas.

I've already bought the Ickabog on preorder though. Grin

GoodyWoolf · 23/09/2020 17:01

Ah I’m so pleased people are voting with their wallets and that so many people will read it and see (I assume because I need to finish another book before I can start it) that it isn’t hateful at all.

Kit19 · 23/09/2020 17:02

I love the hilarious huffy tone of it 😆

“Sadly & Despite the guardian and other media telling ppl how bad & wrong this book, unbelievably ppl have ignored us & continued to buy it”

EdgeOfACoin · 23/09/2020 17:03

It's a massively biased Guardian review. Mentions the reviewers who deemed the book transphobic. Doesn't mention the ones who said it wasn't.

I will buy a copy at some point but I'm only as far as the third book in the series and I'd rather have it in paperback!

Hollyhead · 23/09/2020 17:05

@PrawnofthePatriarchy I read the whole thing in 3 days I put cushions on my lap so I just had to hold it open 😁

Binglebong · 23/09/2020 17:05

I got the first Cormoron Strike book after the shit first started against JKR and it's brilliant. I must say they need to keep cancelling authors - I'm finding some excellent books that way!

Toomuchtea · 23/09/2020 17:08

I have the absolute doorstep - read some of it outside weighted down with stones to keep it open. It's a brilliant read though. Not horribly graphic, as some crime fiction can be, and the characters are as good as the plot.

Just to good to sit in the sun and read an actual book I had bought from an actual shop. Loved it.

FindTheTruth · 23/09/2020 17:18

This Alison Flood article is so misleading.

The Guardian article should have been written by someone who's read the book. It is misleading because it repeats the Times take on it without correction

An early review in the Telegraph called one of the novel’s murder suspects, Dennis Creed, a “transvestite serial killer”

The character is not a transvestite serial killer, but someone who lived as a man. The woman's wig and coat line is one line in a massive book lasting 32 hours on audible and weighing 300IIBs, 1.3 KG

Private eye have noticed that the Grauniad seem to be a little confused about what is in the book.

FindTheTruth · 23/09/2020 17:23

*Telegraph not Times

The book is brilliant. I listened to it over 2 days and couldn't sleep until I'd finished xx

as @jhuizinga says, best to start with book 1, you won't regret it Smile
