Giving to a charity that supports women and girls

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 18/09/2020 14:52

Does anyone have a recommendation for a charity that supports women and girls? I want to set up a regular monthly donation.

Perhaps something that helps women and girls globally with education, healthcare etc? Is Plan International a good option?

Thanks!

Lumos is a good charity. It primarily works with children around the world. www.wearelumos.org

You could support FiLiA. It puts on a brilliant annual women's conference and does loads to bring women together: filia.org.uk

NIA

I donate directly to my local women's DA refuse/shelter. I give cash when I can and also donate good quality clean clothing and new toiletries.

That’s the Karen Ingala-Smith one btw

Nia (domestic violence support)
Southall Black Sisters.
The Centre for Women's Justice.
Fair Play for Women.

I don't think plan international knows what the definition of a girl is. I cancelled my donations to them because of it.

FranklyImCringeing · 18/09/2020 15:14

I used to support Plan International. I stopped for two reasons. This: plan-international.org/news/2018-02-21-our-commitment-stamp-out-abuse-and-exploitation

And also the fact that you are encouraged to visit your sponsored child if you wish. It felt wrong really, very 'here I am, saving you'.

I'd suggest NIA as linked above, Lumos and the Vancouver rape crisis centre. Also local WA refuges.

Marie stopes has a big impact in emerging countries. I'd go for them. For example, awful conditions like fistula are often caused by girls having babies too young. Having family planning support can avoid a lot of kinds of hardship.

ThousandsAreSailing · 18/09/2020 15:21

Marie Stopes Australia removed the word woman regarding who uses abortion services. They called those who objected bigots

I did read the OP and the international request but if you have any spare

In small towns the victims often have to live amongst their attackers.

New Light works in Kolkata with women and children in the red light areas. They run hostels for girls and boys to keep them away from the trade, get them into education. Their efforts are focussed on food distribution at the moment.
On another thread here there is a charity to support the victims of grooming gangs...

I know my dad gives money to a charity that repairs fistulas from birth injuries in young women in Ethiopia, i think he heard about it on Radio 4 but I'm not sure of the name.

IKWRO would be a good charity to support IMO:

I used to support the Eve Appeal (women's gynaecological cancers) until their recent attempts to erase the word woman. Now I'm donating to NIA and Lumos instead, as well as supporting all the crowd justice appeals that are challenging the removal of safeguarding for children and the misinterpretation of the law regarding sex.

Womankind Worldwide is a feminist charity supporting women and girls. If you look at their website, they have no problem using the word “women” and seem to still know what it means!

Yubaba · 18/09/2020 16:23

Not specifically a woman’s charity but I donate £10 a month to lendwithcare.org/ it offers micro loans to those in poorer countries who would struggle to borrow money normally. I only donate to women and you can give as much or as little as you would like.

HappyHedgehog247 · 18/09/2020 16:25

I use Kiva for micro loans to women and single mothers. I re-donate any loan repayments.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 18/09/2020 16:37

Thank you everyone! That's my concern with signing up with charities: they don't stand by the definition of woman.

Great ideas to get me researching 👍

PurpleHoodie · 18/09/2020 17:28

FiLiA looks like a really good thing to support regularly.

I can recommend Concern for the Girl Child, which operates in Uganda.
