Giving to a charity that supports women and girls

Does anyone have a recommendation for a charity that supports women and girls? I want to set up a regular monthly donation.

Perhaps something that helps women and girls globally with education, healthcare etc? Is Plan International a good option?

Thanks!

I give monthly to Vancouver Rape Relief, they’ve been consistently attacked and defunded for refusing to stop centring women.

Women's Resource Centre
Imkaan
Women's Fund for Scotland
Rosa UK
Any local community foundation with a regional women's fund.
Look for grassroots women's groups. Often not a registered charity.

SciFiScream · 18/09/2020 19:12

I also give to LendWithCare and always choose female entrepreneurs.

Great idea. I'm in NI which has a high rate of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls. I'll take a look at some community groups.

I think I'll do a split donation between a local grassroots group and an international charity, like Lumos.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, hope there's plenty of inspiration for everyone!

www.kalayaan.org.uk/ - they work with trafficked women who were brought into the UK as domestic workers. Small charity but so really transformative work.

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 10:21

@FedUpWithBriiiiick I heartily recommend getting in touch with the community foundation of NI then - they have a women's fund. You could see which groups the women's fund has supported and then choose to support one of those.

Community foundations are awesome by the way. Local, places based giving supporting grassroots groups and pooling expertise and donors to help make a difference.

Good luck - you'll enjoy it.

Thanks for all these recommendations. Planning to cancel my Plan donation as they never replied to my query as to how they understand what a girl is. I love the idea of the micro loans charity. I am reading 'Utopia for Realists' and it says the only form of overseas aid actually proved to have a significant impact is giving cash.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 19/09/2020 10:41

Women for Women International is a good one - they do year-long training programmes for marginalised women in countries like Afghanistan and Rwanda so they can learn about healthcare, their rights as women, and they are taught to start up their own small businesses so they can support themselves and their families. The work they do makes a real impact on communities as women pass this knowledge along to other women so there is a ripple effect.

Thank you for this thread. I hadn't heard of some of these organisations and will be bookmarking them.

I don't know whether to be pleased that so many people care , or heartbroken and despairing that these organisations need to exist specifically to support girls and women from abuse.

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 16:38

These are my lend with care stats. I've recently added money (relative returned a gift I bought for them) so money loaded looks high. I'm off to make some loans now.

It's so great to do.

Amnesty do a lot for women’s rights, might be an option.

Do you have a local women’s centre? Not necessarily a refuge, but a general women’s centre. They would love a regular donation!

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 17:02

Amnesty???? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. They don't know what a woman is!!!

That’s not fair. Of course they do. They even support the legalisation of prostitution and say it’s a legitimate career. Funny how they all know what a woman is, when it comes to encouraging the abuse of them. Hmm

Women 4 Refugee Women
Most of my money is going to crowdfunders at the moment.

However someone mentioned Rosa Fund and Women's Fund For Scotland

Rosa fund and Womens Fund for Scotland have funded a project based in Scotland which believes TWAW and that Sex work is work. www.theempowerproject.co.uk/ They had an online survey about the abuse that women recieve online but pulled it when women started to document how they are treated for having GC views.

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 18:49

I wouldn't stop donating to Rosa or Women's Fund for Scotland due to that though. They both support hundreds of grass roots groups based on who applies.

I imagine they are plowing a tricky field too - I work in fundraising so I can imagine what it's like.

WhereAreWeNow · 19/09/2020 19:21

Filia, Southall Black Sisters, Maternity Action, Young Women's Trust, Centre for Women's Justice.

ooh we want to hear more from you! Also google is good I found a group in my local area supporting ethnic minority families recently which I'd never heard of before.
SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 19:40

fatblackcatspaw I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not. Sorry!

I do know how difficult it is for GC fundraisers like me to operate. I can promise you I'm doing everything in my power to centre women and am always advocating for the proper protected characteristics.

My role is more than fundraising so I'm quietly doing what I can in my networks as well as trying to influence policy and Govt too. Due to my role I can't be an out activist but I do lots behind the scenes.

My dream is to endow my cause, become financially independent (so I didn't have to rely on fundraised income) and then be more Magdalen or JKR!!!

£2 million would do it. I've got £200,000...

fatblackcatspaw · 19/09/2020 20:54

not sarcastic ! I genuinely am interested in the best way to fund women

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 21:16

Ah. Ok. Well that's absolutely a passion of mine.

I think grassroots groups are a great place to give. Many might say they support trans women too but they probably have to because funding is so complicated.

Groups that are social enterprises are brill because they can earn their own funds too.

Smaller groups that support black women, Asian women, women who are immigrants, refugees or escaping domestic abuse are good too.

I'm sort of a philanthropy advisor (like a financial advisor but giving instead of investing) so this is a specialist subject.

How much do you have to give? Do you have a geographical area you'd prefer and a particular "theme"? Health? Education? Domestic Abuse? Pregnancy? Women and Children?

Infrastructure orgs (like Women’s Resource Centre and Imkaan) are fab because they then support loads of other groups. Infrastructure orgs for women is a missing piece of the puzzle.

I think I'm spelling Imkann wrong...

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 21:18

I wasn't! Yay.

Taswama · 19/09/2020 21:20

I support Womens Aid, BPAS (pregnancy/ abortion support), a breast cancer charity and, like Yubaba , Lendwithcare - only giving to women.

SciFiScream · 19/09/2020 21:32

I only give to women via Lend with Care too. But look at this - one of the results when I filtered by woman. I'm pretty sure this young woman was born male?

www.wateraid.org/uk/

WaterAid, becaus it's a crying shame in a rich world that we (in one of the richest places on the planet) have not made sure that those poorer than ourselves have even the basics like water.

And it's the girls who miss education to fetch. And the women who have mines than they might otherwise choose, just in the hope some will survive the dirty water to reach adulthood.

This is one of the biggest, and most life-threatening feminist issues there is globally.
