Hadley Freeman in the Spectator on gender

Apologies if this has been posted already. Hadley Freeman writing in the Spectator - “Like a lot of tragically heteronormative women, I am an innate people-pleaser, and for a long time my greatest fear, aside from being forced to go camping, was angering people. But then the latest version of gender theory took off and it turned out that I had a greater fear: denying the bleeding obvious...So now I’m a woman who displeases people, which gender theorists should celebrate as overturning gender norms. And yet, strangely, they do not. Turns out I don’t understand what being a woman means after all.”

Excellent! I was wondering how long it'd take Hadley to join the Good Ship Speccie (even if it's only as an occasional contributor like Suzanne Moore).

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 18/09/2020 12:19

Well now I need to know the gossip about BJ too!

Loving that women are finally feeling able to speak out against this madness.

Me too. Welcome to the dark side Hadley! Wink Grin

StandUpStraight · 18/09/2020 12:21

Yes, it cheered my morning up a bit!

It's particularly heartening, because Hadley normally writes for the ultra-woke Guardian. I feel like more intelligent women with a public voice are starting to speak out and it's SUCH a relief.

Gwynfluff · 18/09/2020 12:52

She's been a critical voice via her Twitter for at least a couple of years. Think she had a specific slot in the guardian (wrote a slightly piss take column on style questions for several years and did celebrity interviews) as opposed to writing longer opinion pieces, she's also written a book about the life of her Jewish grandmother.

wellbehavedwomen · 18/09/2020 13:01

She's been quietly on board for a while. She's a highly intelligent, sane, decent woman who can see precisely what this movement is. She's also bloody brave, speaking out for women when she can see the risks of doing so. I admire her a lot.

And people like her, Moore, Kirkup and Cohen are why I now have a Spectator sub.

ArabellaScott · 18/09/2020 13:13

I might have a bit of PMT, but that article has made me cry.

Well done, Hadley. Star

Tootsweets23 · 18/09/2020 13:16

I absolutely, unwaveringly, unreservedly LOVE the Freeman. She is doing a masterclass on writing first person narratives and I'd love to go but would just embarrass myself by fawning all over her.

JaneAustenWouldHateThis · 18/09/2020 13:33

Great article. I've loved Hadley for years and have missed her since boycotting the grauniad.

How would one go about finding what the Boris goss is?

(PM me if you know.) - yeah, pun.

Vargas · 18/09/2020 13:41

She has been a refreshing voice of reason on Twitter for some time now. Lovely article, thanks for sharing.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 18/09/2020 13:54

I'm sure she has written a few good GC articles even in the Guardian which sneaked past the monitors Grin though I can't remember details right now!

I also want to know the BJ goss now - anybody?? Flowers

TanteRose · 18/09/2020 14:01

Nice one, Hadders Flowers

Siablue · 18/09/2020 14:02

I love Hadley Freeman. Her book is brilliant. Her family’s lives are genuinely more interesting than most novels and she writes so well. It is (as you would expect) very sad too.

I now desperately want to know what the scandal is about Boris. I literally would not be surprised by anything but it is going to be something sexually unusual isn’t it. If we started to guess it would be deleted wouldn’t it?

RoyalCorgi · 18/09/2020 14:05

The story that's been doing the rounds for a while about BJ is that he's been having an affair with a Russian violinist. Some versions of the story claim that he and Carrie have actually split up, while others say that the violinist is trying to sell her story to the newspapers but BJ has taken out a super injunction.

JaneAustenWouldHateThis · 18/09/2020 15:29

BJ, hmm..

Is the prime minister's nickname blow job?

Asking for a friend.

PotholeParadise · 18/09/2020 15:37

I love Hadley so much.

(Also, superinjunction was trending on twitter for a while. If you search that hashtag, you'll be given an overview of the allegations.)

FloralBunting · 18/09/2020 15:41

Oh that's lovely. The bit about breaking gender norms by being a woman who displeases and being faced with the 'No, we didn't mean like that!' responses was my pick too.

I always enjoy it when a male trans person claims to be subverting gender norms by being 'butch'. Like, hun, is subversion the new word for conformity? (don't answer, I know it is!).

CivilCervix · 18/09/2020 15:42

Hadley's one of my faves, she's toughed it out whilst working with the wokest of the woke, very clear in her views. Thanks for sharing OP.

napody · 18/09/2020 15:43

Brilliant, Hadley! Yes ahag, she definitely got at least one GC article into the guardian.

Floisme · 18/09/2020 17:59

I've been a fan of Hadley Freeman since she was on the fashion desk. I can remember 2 GC articles of hers in the Guardian. The first was fairly mild then the second was full on. But that was probably 2 or 3 years ago. I can't remember seeing her writing in any other publication apart than Vogue, so I imagine she'd have tried to get the graun to publish it first, and that taking it elsewhere is a big deal for her.

LearnedResponse · 18/09/2020 18:24

I can’t believe she means the Olivocarne story. That’s been in Popbitch at least twice and you can’t tell me Hadley doesn’t subscribe to Popbitch.

AskDan · 18/09/2020 18:49

I have googled the Olivocarne story and it is old news. Though very tawdry.

I am surprised The Spectator is printing stories alluding to BJ gossip, Cummings and Boris himself have strong links to the paper.

It's true that she hasn't been vocal as some, but I wouldn't call her quiet. She will always have my respect for writing this in 2018 -
