Has Australia gone full on Canada batshit crazy?!

OP posts:
SunsetBeetch · 09/09/2020 11:52

In short: yes it has.

andyoldlabour · 09/09/2020 11:53

Just saw that on my twitter feed, Absolutely mad and very frightening. Talk about out of proportion.

NotBadConsidering · 09/09/2020 11:56

This article is better, rather than descending into the life story of someone:

www.abc.net.au/news/2020-09-09/canberra-radio-newsreader-told-to-pay-transgender-activist-10000/12642722

highame · 09/09/2020 12:03

Tribunal? Perhaps an appeal is in the offing?

yourhairiswinterfire · 09/09/2020 12:05

Am I understanding correctly that they also punished her for not deleting the comments, that she didn't even make? Confused

BrollyKnickers · 09/09/2020 12:07

Wouldn't it be smashing if we all got 10k whenever something mean was said about us?

ArabellaScott · 09/09/2020 12:08

Absolutely insane. Unbelievable.

Are we heading this way?

EyesOpening · 09/09/2020 12:10

Clinch’s wife is more forgiving than me, if my husband had told me that at that time www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/conversations/how-tammy-and-bridget-clinchs-love-survived-a-gender-re-assignme/7773560

ArabellaScott · 09/09/2020 12:10

There is a fundraiser for legal costs, people seem to be donating - on gofundme if you search Beth Rep. Is this case ongoing, in that case?

highame · 09/09/2020 12:38

going to keep an eye out Arabella would like to think she isn't going to let this one go.

aliasundercover · 09/09/2020 12:43

Careful. If you donate that could imply approval of the comments and you might be fined.

Jellyeggs · 09/09/2020 12:48

It sounds like she made an objectionable post and then people commented on that post and she liked those comments and that was the “last straw”.

I think it’s outrageous too, just pointing out it wasn’t a random comment she liked but comments on her own post for which she had already been made to apologize.

I think...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/09/2020 12:55

Wow. I agree with @EyesOpening.

Tammy Clinch was in hospital after giving birth to her youngest daughter, when her husband came to her with news that changed their marriage forever....

Shades of Jane Fae breaking the same news just before Fae's daughter was due to take her AS level exams (which she dropped out of, as as a result, IIRC).

yourhairiswinterfire · 09/09/2020 12:58

Jellyeggs I think you're right, thank you. Just had a read of the second article posted (the abc one) and that explains it a bit more clearly.

HerNameWasEliza · 09/09/2020 13:25

@BrollyKnickers

Wouldn't it be smashing if we all got 10k whenever something mean was said about us?
That would be quite a bill for some trans activitists! How much money would JK Rowling get? Looks like these comments were playground nonsense compared to what was said to her!
MoltenLasagne · 09/09/2020 13:42

None of the comments she is quoting as liking are inciting anything - the worst you could say is that they are a little bit mean. I don't understand what the charge is that has been brought except possibly wrong thing and not being suitable cowed by a prior chastisement.

MoltenLasagne · 09/09/2020 13:42

*wrong think

testing987654321 · 09/09/2020 13:51

JK Rowling should definitely look at tweets/Facebook comments from Australia if that's the kind of payout you get. The stuff I saw against her was actual threats, not simply unpleasantness.

TheChampagneGalop · 09/09/2020 14:00

Must be a narcissist male bully's dream to be able to do fine women for liking the wrong comments.

TheChampagneGalop · 09/09/2020 14:01

*to fine

Cailleach1 · 09/09/2020 15:00

Wow. That must be a wonderful country for women. If that is what happens when you are 'unkind' by not deleting comments made by someone else, there must be huge repercussions for men who are frothing women haters and / or criminals. Men who are misogynistic or who sexually assault or rape women or threaten to do so must feel the full force of the law and be put away for years and years.

Gurufloof · 09/09/2020 15:27

So now we are responsible for our writings, which fair enough, but also anyone else who writes stuff.
Jesus this is mind blowing. So anyone can write offensive stuff on my Facebook, and its then my fault if I dont remove it?
Ffs talk about being everyone's bloody mother.

nachthexe · 09/09/2020 15:31

I’m pissy about the t-shirt.
I want one that switches the medal-esque rainbow strip with the female symbol.
I fought for your rights, will you fight for mine? Stupid fucker. Whilst the military does likely have a higher statistical average of cross-dressing men than civvie street (for all sorts of reasons, including and not limited to trying to prove masculinity and opting for the ultimate ‘male’ career, fuck you social transgression, and a wee (!) but of misogyny) there are also statistically fuck loads more women in the ranks than transgender males.
So fuck you and your t shirt, ‘Tammy’, are YOU going to stand up for the rights of the women you served with?
I have the rage. Must be due on or something.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/09/2020 15:38

the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal yesterday found Ms Rep breached discrimination laws when she 'liked' offensive comments on the post, and ordered she pay Ms Clinch $10,000 in compensation. And what happened to those who made the comments?

"Once she was aware of the comments and did not remove them, she is responsible for them." Oh! I see! Woman is repsonsible for every bloody thing, again!

Insane.

And that bloody T shirt and the lovely 'salute'! - was that picture a sly editorial, do you think?

nepeta · 09/09/2020 17:04

Do these same rules apply to misogynistic comments about women on Facebook or Twitter etc? If someone makes those comments or likes the ones others make on their Facebook page? Or are the rules only for LGBT+ cases?
