Sorry if there’s already a thread about this but a trans person called Lisa objected to the Co op advertising in the ‘transphobic’ Spectator. Someone from the co op of course apologised and said they would look at not advertising there again. It was brought to Andrew Neil’s attention (chairman of Spectator) and his reply on Twitter was

No need to bother, Co-op. As of today you are henceforth banned from advertising in The Spectator, in perpetuity. We will not have companies like yours use their financial might to try to influence our editorial content, which is entirely a matter for the editor.

Glad the Spectator are standing up to this rubbish.

@SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito

*You rarely see 'in perpetuity' in Tweets.
I liked it.*

Indeed. It reminded me of Danaerys (sp?) in GoT.

You just know Andrew Neil was livid when he wrote the Tweet. 😉

A non sequitur here, but anyway...In my house, he's known as the 'kissing consultant' because when William and Kate were married and kissed on the balcony.
He said - in his gruff Paisley way - 'they'll have to do that again'.

SunsetBeetch I didn’t know that about him! I find his story fascinating.

@Ameanstreakamilewide couldn't find a gif of her "in perpetuity" speech but actually I think this one is more fitting Grin.

I found myself on this coop page.

At the bottom it asks "Is there anything wrong with this page?"

Under "What were you doing?" I wrote:
^I was reading Section C.

"Has an Diversity Policy and recruits and promotes employees on the basis of their suitability for the job without discrimination in terms of race, religion, politics, national origin, colour, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, disability or unrelated criminal convictions (see Diversity Policy)."^

Under "What went wrong?" I wrote:
^1. 'Sex' is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. 'Gender' is not a protected characteristic.

This is a direct copy from the Government website:

The following characteristics are protected characteristics—

age;
disability;
gender reassignment;
marriage and civil partnership;
pregnancy and maternity;
race;
religion or belief;
sex;
sexual orientation.

I note that no mention is made by the Co Op of pregnancy and maternity in this section. Perhaps mention is made elsewhere and I´ve missed it?

  1. I couldn't find your Diversity Policy.^

@Antibles

Not playing devil's advocate but the Co-op's own brand beauty and household products have, certainly in the past, been animal cruelty free (leaping bunny logo) for many a year and I support them for that.

I don't want one stupid woke teenager's tweet to undermine the ethical stance they do take on some things. I didn't know about the milk price thing though.

I've been with the Co op bank for more than 20 years, and I support some of their ethical standards (some have definitely slipped).

I think some corporations confuse ethical behaviour with being woke. They think if they support Pride pay get Stonewall medals or whatever and have a visible women they can then treat their employees and customers poorly

Oops should have previewed that one

They're not actually interested in being ethical. They are happy with the status quo.

Doing things like this makes them feel right on with no actual effort.

@Skyliner001

Loving the responses thanks all. X

odd... why are you named after a really dodgy massive development going ahead in Leith? The air pollution is so bad from Marine traffic there they are being built with windows that don't open. www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/politics/council/stalinist-leith-waterfront-skyliner-flats-approved-edinburgh-council-641439

oh and Andrew Neil reported as well on twitter that The Spectator gained 550 new subscribers after this debacle - about an extra £82,000 revenure per year.
