The absolute thrill and power surge this TRA, Bethany Baptiste, must have felt in doing this.

Sorry if this is a dupe - I did search.

This author with 7,500 followers also wanted her fired for talking about pronouns.

Love the illogic there! They haven't actually engaged with what she did say, just took her to task for questioning 'They'!

Ah bless!

Deliriumoftheendless · 25/08/2020 10:15

Crowd fund for a fainting couch.

nevermorelenore · 25/08/2020 10:20

Countdown to someone looking through this handmaiden's Twitter and finding something problematic in her deleted tweets.

Helmetbymidnight · 25/08/2020 10:21

everyone who speaks out is brave but especially so in america- the divide there is so strong...
we are good/democrats/non-racists therefore anyone who questions trans-ideology is a bigot.

Helmetbymidnight · 25/08/2020 10:30

that tobias put a call out for trans and non binary writers, before he went off on his break.

my agent is gc and out (thank fuck) otherwise i would be sweating -even more than im usually sweating 😫 the publishing industry is really in the thick of all this.

Mammatino · 25/08/2020 10:44

It’s trending on Twitter now. How absolutely shite. I looked at her tweets expecting to find something blatantly anti trans. No just women are women. Sense really. Poor girl. I hate to think of women having To become martyrs just for being women and speaking the truth.

ThePankhurstConnection · 25/08/2020 10:45

I'm disgusted by this. I shouldn't be shocked as this is happening more and more frequently but I want to keep being shocked because it is authoritarian and wrong and yes, shocking that this is where we are.

I see how little women are valued and how utterly spinless these publishing houses and companies really are.

AgnesCastus · 25/08/2020 10:49

Helmet I'd dearly love to PM you and ask for a clue as to who your agent might be, but I know that would be putting you on the spot and compromising your MN anonymity and I wouldn't do that.

I'm in the UK publishing industry and stalk twitter, saying nothing, liking nothing, but risking the odd GC follow. If anyone scrutinised my account they'd see I follow Jane Clare Jones, Fair Cop, Allison Bailey etc and know what my position is, but I have American publishers too and I can't risk doing more. (I've even name changed for this post, so dots can't be joined - I have a long MN posting history on lots of different subjects though now I'm 99% FWR.) Occasionally I see other authors I follow liking tweets by those accounts, so I have an idea of which of my friends are GC, but never any industry people. I was gutted by the amount of support shown to Damian Barr, and the number of people in my professional circle denouncing JKR, which just hammered home how dangerous it would be for me to give any hint of my views.

An out GC agent is a rare and marvellous thing.

Mollscroll · 25/08/2020 11:16

Ironically their logo looks an awful lot like a woman's legs, hips and groin. In fact that's all I can see when I look at their logo Grin

Hope this reminds them what a woman is, every time they see it.

queenofknives · 25/08/2020 11:18

Wow I too wish to know who the out GC agent is! I'm guessing it's a man...

This whole thing is such a fucking grift. I saw the agency are now saying they'll read any trans person's manuscript and donated money to pay for rent and surgery for black TW. It's a grift. It's so obvious. Before long, publishing will be full of trans writers who are there because they threatened to throw a fit if they weren't published. It's already getting a bit like that.

SoManyActivities · 25/08/2020 11:21

Yes, I saw it was trending too. This is exactly what JKR was talking about when she spoke about 'cancel culture'. She wasn't talking about herself, as some of the hard of thinking appear to believe, she was talking about women like Sasha White.

AllWashedOut · 25/08/2020 11:31

I've been following a few lit agents on twitter that are pretty GC 'out'. Plenty of the others are woke-central though.

I was shocked to read about Sasha until I realised Tobias was NY-based. Massive eye roll. It's all going batshit crazy over the pond. I would hope things were less crazed over here. Depressing to read this crap. I feel so bad for Sasha, dropped in an eye blink on the words of some nutters.

Helmetbymidnight · 25/08/2020 12:26

oh feel free to pm- i wont say anything thats not already in the public domain(?!)

and yes to that logo. the irony.

DancingLady · 25/08/2020 12:39

Agnes and Cactus hi from another publishing industry person. It's pretty bleak. I'm freelance so hopefully the worst that can happen if I like a GC tweet is that a woke editor doesn't give me work again. I can deal with that. So many editors I know are GC but afraid to be out. One or two who work for explicitly feminist publishing houses are more out than most. I've spoken to a few who are questioning TRA ideology and they're all scared to speak out.

highame · 25/08/2020 12:47

Given that lots of people can't speak out and companies, there will come a tipping point and it will only take one. Perhaps things will just have to get a lot dafter first

highame · 25/08/2020 12:48

sent before completion. JKR made a huge difference

DreadPirateLuna · 25/08/2020 12:54

It's telling that they assume Sasha's belief in biological reality means she must be prejudiced against transwomen, that she would automatically reject a submission by a transwoman no matter how good it was. It's like assuming an atheist agent would never accept a Christian writer.

Publishing seems really screwed up at the moment. I've lurked on a few writers' forums; they are drenched in TRA ideology and intolerant of any opinion that diverges from it. It's awful for individual writers and agents, but I also worry about the impact it has on literature. Surely such a narrowing of acceptable views will impoverish the arts.

Imagine someone writes a YA novel about a detransitioner, for example. No matter how well written or appealing, no agent or publisher would touch it.

MondayYogurt · 25/08/2020 13:03

They've gone through her old tweets and found these.

Not sure why she didn't Damian Barr it and lock the accounts.

@BlackWaveComing

She's in a fire at will state in the US.

'Progressives' think it's noble to weaponise the lack of workers rights against a worker. That's what passes for progressive in the 21st C.

That was my first thought too. Where are the trade unions in all of this? Their silence on this is shocking.

Anything to do with imagination, pretending, putting yourself into a different role, becoming another thing...well that's the natural home of TRAs.
Games, books, sex work, porn, social media, TV, film, art, even puppetry (www.gishgallop.com/sesame-street-announces-new-transgender-character/).
I've yet to encounter TRAs dominating the discourse on hiking, gardening, donkey rescue, bushcraft, or sailing.

Give it time. There's no online community they couldn't infiltrate and destroy. Look what they did to knitting.

SoManyActivities · 25/08/2020 13:24

Presumably because she feels she has nothing to be ashamed of?

There is nothing abusive or threatening in those tweets - there are no references to laughing at 'trannies' killing themselves or anything a la Mr Barr?

I opened that tweet expecting really bad stuff!

SoManyActivities · 25/08/2020 13:27

This sums it up really. I feel sorry for genuine trans people who must be watching what is going on in horror!

queenofknives · 25/08/2020 13:27

I did wonder why she was posting under her own name. Not that she should have to be anonymous, but it seems a bit naive not to expect she would be connected to her work account. I mean, good for her for speaking out under her own name, but I'm kind of surprised that she hadn't planned for exactly this eventuality.
