Looks like Mermaids are cleaning up the website to remove the claim that toy and clothing preference is a sign of being trans.

This now says of course' there's no connection between toys and 'transgender children'

You can't get a diagnosis of GD in childhood without adhering to stereotypes of the opposite sex. It's in the diagnostic criteria.

gardenbird48 · 20/08/2020 14:13

I wonder if Mermaids will be contacting the families who have started socially transitioning their kids on the basis of this information and update them with the new list of indicators (whatever they are?) to review whether they are on the right track Will the list of referrals to GIDS that Mermaids have helped with on this basis be reviewed?

Aesopfable · 20/08/2020 14:26

Not to mention being ‘gay’ which is hurtful

(Their inverted commas)

Aesopfable · 20/08/2020 14:28

Sorry - being thought of a ‘gay’ which is hurtful.

MoltenLasagne · 20/08/2020 14:29

I'm really appalled that a strong aversion to their own genitals is considered a flag for gender dysphoria and not a massive flag for sexual abuse. Similarly the wishing to be another sex - many children experiencing abuse wish to be the other sex in the belief it will keep them safe.

Those are literally the only symptoms in the diagnostic criteria that aren't based in stereotypes and they are key flags IMO for abuse.

Aesopfable · 20/08/2020 14:35

I do wonder though if this is a step back or a step forward by them? There seems to be a TRA theme that suggests that being stereotypically masculine, complete with pride and contentment in their male body, must not preclude them from declaring themselves women. In which case mermaids suggestions that playing with toys stereotypically associated with the opposite sex was necessary would be condemned as transphobic.

forsucksfake · 20/08/2020 14:39

@MoltenLasagne Excellent point.

Homophobia, emotional blackmail, magical thinking, financial incentive and sexism will blind even those responsible for safeguarding to their training.

AntsInPenzance · 20/08/2020 14:40

Why are dolls and pushchairs considered 'girls' toys, but men pushing their babies in real pushchairs isn't seen as negative or feminine?

That's shocking.

Interesting that going up the female scale the women's figures are becoming more accentuated towards an hour glass shape and their hair is getting bigger! Whereas the men all look the same...

moptophairshop · 20/08/2020 14:54

@MoltenLasagne yes I thought there were safeguarding red flags in there too (becoming withdrawn, being secretive, self harm). It just reinforces how important it is that anyone involved needs to be trained in safeguarding. This applies to every aspect of working with children (every adult in a school is legally required to attend annual safeguarding training). As a charity surely they must be regulated so who ensures they comply with safeguarding regulations?

And ironing clothes. When it's actually insisted on in the Armed Forces.

And playing in the toy kitchen? I'm sure Gordon Ramsay would have something to say about that.

The ridiculous sexism underpinning this nonsense is so obvious. I'm constantly shocked.

There was a discussion about mermaids training a while ago. This ☝️thread has links to recordings and transcripts.

Every time I see that Barbie to GI Joe poster I can't understand why people don't see how ridiculous it is.

wellbehavedwomen · 20/08/2020 17:42

Oh my God, that image of, 'ways in which gender dysphoria may present' and they cite autism, ADHD, bi-plar, borderline personality disorder, loneliness, poor family relationships, poor academic performance.. and then, at the very end, 'reduced gender dysphoria.'

A sign of gender dysphoria is reduced gender dysphoria?

These are the most vulnerable possible kids. And changing their minds on being trans - in all the most vulnerable groups - is apparently more evidence for being trans? EVERYTHING is an indication of gender dysphoria? And anyone identified as extremely vulnerable amongst their peers, desperate for love, acceptance and peace of mind... is therefore more likely to be trans?

There are words for this sort of thinking. I won't use them as I've not been deleted yet, and would like to keep it that way, but bloody hell.

KingaRoo · 20/08/2020 19:17

I think critical thinking and analysis needs to be taught in school!

Gwynfluff · 20/08/2020 19:39

Agree. Think there is something in this.

It’ll be interesting to see the new list. Is it linked in with scaling back of dysphoria as a basis for being trans? It’s already taken hold in the some of the adult discourse which derides trans people who accept dysphoria and have surgery as ‘truscum’.

Gwynfluff · 20/08/2020 19:44

Looks like an Autistic child description. No wonder the correlation is enormous.

Definitely

NiceGerbil · 20/08/2020 20:07

'A strong preference for playmates of the other gender'

This one always really bothers me.

The idea that boys and girls are almost different species, not liking or getting on with each other, is horrible.

Gwynfluff · 20/08/2020 20:19

Just looked on the site at the parent resources. Don’t seem to have any lists on them at the moment. However there are 5 parent stories and 4 are about prepubertal children. In every case, the child either plays with toys and/or wears clothes that are stereotypically ascribed to the opposite sex to them. So boys playing with dolls and wearing skirts, a girl who becomes hysterical when asked to wear a dress.

KatieAlcock · 20/08/2020 20:20

I think it's all based on 1950s US ideas of how girls and boys should be.

Yup. And Susie Green saying that 'cis' people fancy the opposite sex.

Is anyone having trouble going back to page one of this thread?

OldCrone · 20/08/2020 21:36

Binglebong I'm having trouble going back to page one of any thread if I've bookmarked a later page. The only workaround I've found is to bookmark the OP and then go back.
