Ooo this is really really cool! I love their hashtag too Smile

TheFleegleHasLanded · 12/08/2020 21:48

Thank you OP, this is great!

FlibbertyGiblets · 12/08/2020 21:53

Isn't it great? Free books, by women, a wonderful idea.

Siablue · 12/08/2020 21:56

I think this is a lovely idea. How lovely to see the names on the books. I will be getting them, some of them I haven’t heard of before so it will be good to read them.

Scout2016 · 12/08/2020 21:59

I can't access twitter for reasons I am too crap with IT to understand. What does it say please?

picklemewalnuts · 12/08/2020 22:03

www.baileys.com/en-gb/reclaim-her-name-campaign

Download books published for the first time with their female author's name.

Lucyslampost · 12/08/2020 22:07

This is wonderful. I'm surprised by how emotional it makes me feel!

LittleHootie · 12/08/2020 23:49

I think it's great. I'm surprised at the negativity on twitter, talking about "removing the agency" of the authors. I think people are applying 2020 rationale to the experiences of 150 - 50 years ago.

NoSquirrels · 13/08/2020 15:16

Fair bit of backlash against it and some retrospective "I'm not transing historical figures but..." reasoning alongside. Weird how even non-contentious "Look at these brilliant women" initiatives are being picked apart by identity politics.

SerenityNowwwww · 13/08/2020 15:23

Wow. I just had a poke in the window of my local bookshop and I suspect a feminist was doing the windows! 😉

Scout2016 · 13/08/2020 19:38

Great idea. Thanks for the link.

queenofknives · 13/08/2020 19:54

How fantastic! Thanks for this. (I had a terrible moment where I thought you were going to say a man had won the women's prize...)

Ugh yeah, just saw a comment saying that it would only be okay if we can definitely verify that they were trans men! Erm yeah, I can totally verify that none of them were trans men since that was not a thing until about ten minutes ago. Someone else saying they'll never buy Baileys again (more for the rest of us!)
SerenityNowwwww · 13/08/2020 20:32

My late mum loved a Baileys. I might buy a bottle on her honour.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 13/08/2020 20:37

Something else to look forward to when the library —finally— opens!

EyesOpening · 13/08/2020 20:50

If I'm looking at the right one, doesn't it say the opposite of that?
"Were you able to confirm that all of these were actual women and not trans men? If the former, great! If the latter, or if you could not confirm, that could be problematic."
"Yup, sorry if I was unclear on that! It may very well not be an issue, but I would feel more comfortable knowing research into why these people used a male name was done. If that due diligence happened, awesome!"

Ridiculous, do they also think turning the books into films, tv series is also 'removing the agency' of the authors.
RoseTintedAtuin · 13/08/2020 21:20

Love this! Thank you!

LittleHootie · 13/08/2020 22:06

Probably @Imnobody4! Jack Monroe's angle was "I write using a 'mans' name and would be furious if someone decided to take that away." Then a whole thread of hundreds agreeing with her. So self absorbed they can't conceive of experiences beyond their own.

Siablue · 13/08/2020 22:44

But she doesn’t write using a mans name because her name is Jack and she isn’t a man. Everyone knows that she wrote her books. In the past you couldn’t publish under your own name if you were a woman. Jane Austin doesn’t even have the fact that she was an author on her gravestone and none of her books were published under her name in her life time. That is the same for most of those authors. I honestly despair.
SerenityNowwwww · 13/08/2020 22:45

I thought she went non binary and blind her breasts for a while?

LittleHootie · 13/08/2020 23:03

The sad trend of not being able to celebrate female achievement because "insert gender is non binary waffle here".

SheeshSheesh · 14/08/2020 01:10

Wow that’s such a good idea. And quite moving to ‘discover’ the women behind the men’s names. And none of those women wrote under male names for any other reason than that they knew society would treat them as ‘inferior if they fessed up as female authors and they probably wouldn’t have been published. They weren’t identifying as Male, they were identifying as authors.

OhNoGroken · 14/08/2020 01:17

Has anyone got a link to buying the whole box set?

OhNoGroken · 14/08/2020 01:19

Oh I’ve just seen the “no plans to sell them” comments - what a shame!
