NHS Gender Dysphoria

I don't know if this is new or not but:

"A diagnosis of gender dysphoria in childhood is rare.

Most children who seem confused about their gender identity when young will not continue to feel the same way beyond puberty. Role playing is not unusual in young children."
www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/symptoms/

And:

"It's not unusual for children to show an interest in clothes or toys that society tells us are more often associated with the opposite gender.

With toy stores dedicating whole floors to colour-coded boys' or girls' toys, as just one example, it's not surprising that parents may expect a child to closely match traditional expectations of how male and female genders should behave.

You may be worrying that your child's exploration of different gender preferences and behaviours is not "normal" or you may feel that such explorations are somehow your "fault". However, none of this is the case.

We now believe that gender identity is on a spectrum, with male at one end, female at the other and a "diversity" of gender identities in between. These can include male and female, non-binary or even agender (no gender).

A young child's exploration of different gender identities is quite common and, in most cases, will fade. However, in some, it will continue into later childhood and adolescence."

And:

"In many cases, gender-variant behaviour or feelings disappear as children get older – often as they reach puberty. Many will go on to identify as gay or lesbian."

A child doesn’t know that action man = boy, barbie = girl until people tell them so. That’s the problem here.

Melroses · 01/08/2020 10:11

Wow - someone has finally read their child development book. Grin

SerenityNowwwww · 01/08/2020 10:12

DS read my old ones when he was about 12 and understood it better than some ‘adults’.

Melroses · 01/08/2020 10:16

Although they can fuck off with their gender identity spectrum nonsense. There is no gradual M to F spectrum. It is all over the place with some more M than F traits and vice versa that may or may not apply to most M or F.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/08/2020 10:20

I'm just grateful they didn't say sex is a spectrum...

OP posts:
SerenityNowwwww · 01/08/2020 10:25

Saw an application form with a ‘gender identity’ question and ‘intersex’ was an option... (Sex wasn’t asked) 🙄

Melroses · 01/08/2020 10:27

Yes, I think we have been forced into being thankful for small mercies.

This is more like the page should have been from the start. Goodness knows who wrote and OK's the original. It read like a dystopian advert for Mermaids.

KingFredsTache · 01/08/2020 10:28

Does anyone know - did Mermaids, along with GIRES, used to be on the 'Support' section of this on the NHS website? If it has recently been removed, that's quite useful info for me!

Melroses · 01/08/2020 10:30

I haven't signed up for the Zoe app because you can't get past the page with the 2 stage question where it asks you what gender you identify as which is definitely written from the perspective of #GenderWoo. I am not a believer.

KingFredsTache · 01/08/2020 10:34

Oh hang on, in that second link it still links to GIRES.

It's very different!

Oh my god that old page! The section about 'what causes gender dysphoria'!!!

Lambside · 01/08/2020 10:39

All going well until We (who's we?) now believe that gender identity is on a spectrum.
Dang!

I should have said, the archive link is comparative to this page:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/gender-dysphoria/

There are quite a few changes. The old version looks like it was written by Stonewall, lots of assigned at birth and conjecture about hormone washes. New version seems to be rather more evidence based.

Lambside · 01/08/2020 10:42

If gender is a spectrum with male at one end and female at the other can I just rebel completely and be something beyond female? Or is that where unicorn is?
Just thinking outside the box here.

BlueBrush · 01/08/2020 10:48

@Lambside Grin Ultrafemale? Infrafemale?

It's weird though, because the NHS new page still links to the 'Tranz Wiki' page of the GIRES website, an organisation which still subscribes to all the horseshit stuff on the old NHS page.

Goldencurtain · 01/08/2020 10:57

Uggg they are sciencewashing gender identity. By the NHS saying gender identity exists (and not distinguishing it from sex where most people think gender is another word for sex) people will just think it's fact

highame · 01/08/2020 11:03

@KingFredsTache I'm not sure, but I think that will change. There's major scrutiny going on because the public are seeing this as something really bad happening to children. The public pay taxes, and the majority, when given the right information, speak out and expect change

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 01/08/2020 11:32

The number of 3/4/5 year olds that say "I don't want a blue plate, I'm a girl" or "Girls don't play with Lego" or "He wants to play the mummy and he can't cos he's boy" etc etc etc (especially at the start of the school year) makes me very frustrated but it's fun to see them changing their minds. By the end of the school year, most children are very accepting.

It's when children say, eg "Mummy says I'm not allowed to put the princess dress on again" that I find it disheartening. I do talk with the parent and tell them that we don't restrict children's imagination and they are encouraged and supported to try all or any activity of their choosing. Angry

merrymouse · 01/08/2020 11:37

It starts off well and then gets confused.

A young child's exploration of different gender identities is quite common and, in most cases, will fade. However, in some, it will continue into later childhood and adolescence.

Is a girl who likes dinosaurs just a girl who likes dinosaurs, or is she 'exploring her gender identity?'.

I'd love them to explain what constitutes 'male' gender identity is, and why women don't have that identity. I think I will have to write and fine out.
