No death threats as he's a man but fuck knows why "individuals with a cervix" is better than "women and transmen"

Nobody ever points out that not everyone knows if they have a cervix

The fact that one never sees this phrase, or its counterpart "men and transwomen" must be telling us something. One could not logically be accused of transphobia with them and yet nobody uses them.

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 31/07/2020 11:42

This is all so pointless, why cant we just accept that sex and gender are two different concepts and take it from there.

Sex is binary, male or female and gender is a spectrum ranging from high femme to masculine. Sex based rights and protections are maintained regardless of your gender because they are related to your biology not our self expression or identity.

Female does not equal femininity and male does not equal masculinity. It really seems that simple to me. And hopefully it will help people who are struggling with gender roles and their sex too.

I wonder what would happen if I put an "I ❤️ Piers Morgan" poster up at Edinburgh Waverley Station. Do you think it would be removed?

Oh so innocent! Of course it would be transphobic to say women and trans men. Because some women don't have a cervix because they have a penis. There is no statement you can make about women which isn't transphobic.

The way things are going is a disaster for women's health.

I wonder will women have to die needlessly before a new plain English campaign is instigated?

For so many years women's bodies and bodily functions were taboo. Is that our future as well as our past?

We briefly thought that learning anatomically correct words and learning about our bodies was empowering. It would be great if every woman knew that she had a cervix. I don't think we are there yet. How will we get there if this Newspeak prevails? What about women for whom English is not their first language? I can imagine many native speakers wouldn't know that they are "cervix havers".

Now must we be silenced again, will our daughters and granddaughters be ignorant about their health needs, incapable of seeking advice for problems they cannot name?

DadOnIce · 31/07/2020 14:34

Of course, the wokesters are all 'god, look at this, the transphobes have got dinosaurs like Piers Morgan on their side, blah wokey blah.'

Whereas what should give them pause for thought is, 'blimey, even Piers Morgan thinks women are being oppressed here? Something's up.'

TheRealMcKenna · 31/07/2020 14:42

As someone commented on the CNN Twitter post, why is it only women that are being erased?

Haha this is a great point. A) some people have no idea what a cervix is and B) how the fuck do you know if you've got a cervix if you haven't had a smear test or had kids? Surely you can only assume you have one because... you're female?!

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 31/07/2020 15:00

Can someone point me to the research about women not knowing if they have a cervix please? I've seen this mentioned before but not sure where the data comes from.

netflixismysidehustle · 31/07/2020 15:10

www.jostrust.org.uk/node/666780

I've not seen research as such but a quick google suggests even more than I thought.

I have been trying to find statistics for take up of cervical smears today, with the mangled language, compared to a few years ago when the campaigns would be targeted at ‘women’.

I am sure that very recently there has been news of the lowest take up ever for smears. I know what my guess for the reason for that would be. But before i say anything on Twitter I feel only statistics will be accepted, not just my memory.

People just call it a smear test in conversation so not sure they would know that cervical screening was a more formal way to describe it.

God the number of men in the responses pontificating about why it’s not acceptable to use the word woman

FUCK OFF

netflixismysidehustle · 31/07/2020 15:22

www.nhs.uk/conditions/cervical-cancer/

How comes no activists have demanded that transmen and non-binary and assigned female is added to this?
🤔

FUCK OFF

They have not had more than one dose of the inclusiveness effect yet. I have over thirty pieces saved in my archives where 'women' is nowhere to be found, but blokes are largely left alone. So it is easy for them to pontificate.

And many don't get that one's definition of one's own gender may be like an identity but depend on one's biological sex. This is not allowed in the trans dictionary so the fact that I , for example, am getting my gender identity (or something similar) invalidated doesn't even get noticed.

Anonymum263 · 31/07/2020 15:42

Thanks,@netflixismysidehustle for that Jo's Trust link. It really illustrates the dangers of, as@DaisiesandButtercups said, Newspeak.

highame · 31/07/2020 16:10

Would someone like to tell me what our Biology Teachers are doing?

highame · 31/07/2020 16:11

Because they don't seem to be doing their f..king jobs

nepeta · 31/07/2020 16:31

To clarify my comment above, the reason CNN reported on cervical cancer screening the way it did was because the stuff wasn't from them but from the American Cancer Society. So from a very high level.

SheWhoMustNotBeHeard · 31/07/2020 16:35

@netflixismysidehustle thanks for the link. Very useful. The language we use everyday might contribute to this. For example, we may talk about cervical cancer and smear test but the only time I can think of the word cervix being used was during pregnancy and birth.

zanahoria · 31/07/2020 16:52

I wonder what would happen if I put an "I ❤️ Piers Morgan" poster up at Edinburgh Waverley Station

They would assume it was a joke

Grumblyberries · 31/07/2020 17:15

re. people not knowing if they have a cervix or not - I think there is also added confusion by the fact that people (may) have heard about cervical spine, cervical vertebrae - various other 'neck' issues use the word cervical as well. Add that to people talking about smear tests, or pap smears, etc rather than saying 'cervix', and I can understand why some people might not be familiar with the word in all its contexts.
