For those who can't watch, I thought it would be useful to post any important news here.
11.30 start...

I thought LT looked pretty pissed off, not her usual ebullient self.

Rumour is she is for the chop in the autumn reshuffle so no idea where that will leave us.

Perhaps she wanted to make the announcement, but has been blocked by others in government? Perhaps they're planning to boot her out in a reshuffle?

I had a look at the twitter discussion of this and I saw a tweet by thoroughly toxic TRA notCursedE:

twitter.com/notCursedE/status/1285891357735821312

Then I noticed the username they've adopted recently: double dill dorothy. In case you don't see it, that's double dil' do'. It's yet another clear indicator how porn is a significant driver of what they think and what they do, and how they like to make that clear.

happydappy2 · 22/07/2020 12:28

Interestingly Christine Burns is tweeting

I should add that “we won’t ... roll back” provides a very wide margin of opportunity to do harm whilst claiming you haven’t. Also, as many trans rights aren’t official but are are undocumented and merely matters of convention, you can do a lot of administrative harm w/o leg’n.

Hmmm matters of convention-I'd interpret that as illegal !

Dogman · 22/07/2020 12:29

I wonder is the delay in the hope that BLM drops slightly off the radar by autumn - I’m new to this area but it seems to me TRAs have managed to add themselves into BLM - maybe they don’t want to reinflame the protests? Sorry if this is badly put.

Wolfgirrl · 22/07/2020 12:32

I'm going to be tentatively optimistic.

If they had decided to push forward with self ID, it wouldn't take too long to announce - they could 'blame' it on being 'democratic' and enforcing the results of the survey, copy Ireland in terms of reforming the Act then sit back and bask in woke glory.

Whereas if they dont go ahead with it they have to find a way to say what a pile of shite the survey was and that they're not enforcing it without causing all out riots. They're probably thrashing out some token stuff they can give them to soften the blow.

Well, that's what I'm hoping, anyway.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/07/2020 12:32

I suspect there is a massive power struggle going on behind the scenes. We know how thoroughly the civil service and other parts of the government have been captured. Yet briefing notes are being withdrawn and rewritten, schools guidance is being pulled from many local authorities, and the NHS has changed its guidance. It's impossible to say which way this will go, but there is hope in the face that there isn't currently a new version of the GRA up for discussion.

Winesalot · 22/07/2020 12:38

maybe, they have to allow time to pass while they read all the letters sent in and don't want to be seen as ignoring them.....

I am still optimistic... well slightly optimistic.

highame · 22/07/2020 12:42

I am very sure that the whole BLM movement is not happy at being pulled into a Stonewall movement. There is a BLM Ltd, which is strongly allied to the hard left and I think that's what is being used.

The hard left sense a revolution and they're wetting themselves with joy and are trying absolutely anything. Trans BLM, so long as there's protest that's fine.

You'll have to massively correct me

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/07/2020 12:43

I wish I could be optimistic but I am filled with dread. If LT goes they will replace her with someone who thinks TWAW.

There is no fucking roll back of rights except female sex based rights.

Kantastic · 22/07/2020 12:46

Maybe this speculation is too wild, but I am wondering if there's a big news story in the pipeline that will change the media climate. Like how a lot of journalists knew about the Karen White case for months but couldn't report on it - because of court restrictions or something?

I am thinking specifically of the Forest of Dean murder - a woman murdered in an exceptionally grisly way in a woman's refuge, apparently by another woman from the refuge (that there are no photographs of, who has no trace on social media, who the press stories initially referred to as "he" before they were changed.) If that story is what I think it is, it can't be hushed up forever.

I also agree with Dogman that fear of igniting BLM protests could be feeding into it.

IrenetheQuaint · 22/07/2020 12:49

Meh, the government misses deadlines all the time. Especially at the moment given Covid/economic collapse/Brexit hell. I really wouldn't read much into the delay either way.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/07/2020 12:54

Always.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/07/2020 12:57

I sent an email to no 10 in June and have only received a message that it was being passed on last week, so I suspect there is quite a lot of correspondence to go through!

My fucker of an MP didn't even bother to reply.

Vermeil · 22/07/2020 13:07

@Kantastic
That’s a very good point. It’s all gone quiet for obvious reasons, and I can’t find any info on when the next court hearing is due.
As to the identity of the accused, the vaguely ridiculous and exotic forename does ring alarm bells.

Winesalot · 22/07/2020 13:08

My fucker of an MP didn't even bother to reply.

Mine did with the usual LibD trope, asked for evidence which I sent them some and not heard from again since. Considering that this used to be a power seat of the party, I could not expect anything less though.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/07/2020 13:14

I sent mine with evidence attached, and it was personal and heartfelt, so I guess there wasn't anything he could say to fob me off. So he didn't bother to say anything at all. I'm going to push again, and try for a face to face.

OvaHere · 22/07/2020 13:19

I'm sure this issue is thought of as a massive pain in the arse for the government, most of whom won't be ideological zealots on this particular issue.

Everyone knows who and what women are so having to spend time and resources tip toeing around something that is obvious in a 'water is wet' type way will be hugely frustrating.

We've just seen a similar thing with the rugby situation - all that time, effort and money spent just to 'prove' than males are bigger, stronger etc...than females is ridiculous. The average 5 yr old knows this.

I suppose the biggest question is why the present government is treating it with kid gloves? They have a large majority, there's no election on the horizon and all indictions are that most people are fed up of nonsense when it comes to this issue.

I think the general public have some sympathy with individuals who suffer discomfort with their bodies but as soon as it crosses into absurdity like 'female penises', rapists in women's prisons and female sports being invaded by males the support evaporates.

What is this story? You're right - no mention of this "woman" murderer but the man who assisted them has his photo out there. What's going on here?
Whatisthisfuckery · 22/07/2020 13:26

FFS, why is this taking so long? Government delay yet again announcing that the sun is hot. FFS!

Really good question. I don't agree with Irene about the government missing deadlines all the time. I'm sure they do, but I don't think that's what's going on here. The consultation was two years ago. They've had plenty of time to prepare, and just a few weeks ago said there'd be an announcement before recess. So best guesses:

  1. Real disagreement in government about fundamental elements of the announcement, e.g. someone wants to strengthen single-sex exemptions, someone else doesn't.
  1. They've had a torrent of emails from TRAs, mistakenly imagine TRAs represent public opinion and are having second thoughts.
  1. They don't particularly care what TRAs think but are aware that TRAs are very vocal, so think the best thing to do is announce this quietly while everyone is on holiday.
  1. As a PP said, there's a lot going on with things like the trans toolkits being used in schools, plus the legal challenges to GIDS etc, the fact that prisons and NHS are acting "ahead" (ie against) the law, the dubious influence of Stonewall and Mermaids, and are beginning to realise this issue is quite complicated and they need to do something more than just say "we're not going to change the Act". Just a guess, but maybe the issue of what we do with children identifying as trans is proving to be particularly fraught.

I think it might be a combination of 1 and 4.
