Formerly single sex, they were made unisex to appease the trans lobby.

I'll bet you can't guess what happened ...

Dreadful.

ShinyFootball · 18/07/2020 19:50

Well that's a shocker Hmm

titchy · 18/07/2020 19:53

To be fair the vast majority of UK student accommodation is mixed sex...

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/07/2020 19:53

Disgusting lack of care for young women.

Clymene · 18/07/2020 19:58

But it's designed that way titchy. What this woman is describing is facilities designed for single sex use, being redesignated mixed.

No. She's describing mixed sex accommodation. She isn't describing female only accommodation that admits TW - if she was her argument would be really powerful.

I get that the college changed from single sex to mixed to appease TRAs. But no one is being deceived here. And as I said the vast majority of students in the UK live in mixed sex accommodation.

PlanDeRaccordement · 18/07/2020 20:31

I think the key is not the mixed sex accommodation, but the unisex showers and bathrooms described in the thread the OP linked to.
It is very grim.

whatnow41 · 18/07/2020 20:49

Every UK student halls I've been in had en-suite bathrooms per room, and I'm going back 20 years as well as recently. This is not comparable to the US set up.

Loads have a shared bathroom! And shared with either sex.

Again normal for UK student residences.

We had that in my UK halls in 1997. Two shower cubicles between 16 rooms. Luckily my corridor was half-empty for whatever reason (I think a lot of people went home at weekends).

Clymene · 18/07/2020 21:03

No, she's talking about bathroom facilities (showers and toilets) which were designed for women to use which are now mixed sex.

Hence stalks and flimsy doors.

I was in mixed sex halls. We had separate shower and toilet facilities for men and women.

I was in a mixed sex student block but we had single sex shower facilities. I've never known anyone who had ensuite bathrooms as part of their student experience!

Clymene · 18/07/2020 21:04

Stalls, not stalks!

And I don't know if you've ever been to the US but there are massive gaps around the doors and under them, even in nice facilities. There certainly isn't much privacy.

OP posts:
Clymene · 18/07/2020 21:05

And that is not normal.

NotTerfNorCis · 18/07/2020 21:16

Was that written by a transwoman? The last sentence implies it was.

Agree that last sentence is odd - she includes TW as also being at risk from mixed ex dorms. Which is an unusual standpoint from someone supposedly not happy about the influence of trans people...
SarahTancredi · 18/07/2020 21:45

I wondered if rhe last sentence was kinda an attempt to "not sound transphobic" in the hope that the sympathy would be given to those that deserve it rather than readers distracted how exclusionary those pesky women were being....

Either way it all sounds ghastly. Men need to sort other men out before they start calling women exclusionary or discriminatory for not wanting to be around them and their dicks.

TheoneandObi · 18/07/2020 21:58

DD had mixed sex corridor and bathrooms/showers in her first year at Durham four years ago. So did DS five years ago. I should ask her if it was as appalling as this. She hasn't said it was. I understood it was pretty common at uk universities.

AnyOldPrion · 18/07/2020 22:32

She explains her reasoning here:

twitter.com/terfalicious/status/1284594799748800513?s=21

Not sure I agree with her, but she’s certainly a thoughtful young woman. It’s disgusting that the college is putting young women at risk, and exposing them to sexual harassment so as to appease a tiny group of utterly unreasonable people.

AnyOldPrion · 18/07/2020 22:33

Apologies, wrong screenshot.

ChloeCrocodile · 18/07/2020 22:46

I had mixed sex halls at uni and shared shower/bathrooms (15 years ago). The bathrooms were all designed for individual use, like a bathroom in a house. Nothing like what is described here.

I don’t understand how a random bloke from down the corridor would have access to the living space she shared with her roommates. Surely they would be behind a proper front door (requiring a key) just like a block of flats?

PAND0RA · 18/07/2020 22:54

Lots of student accommodation in the Uk is en-suite.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 18/07/2020 22:55

When we looked at accommodation for ds1 there was either en suite or individual shower rooms and toilets which were obviously mixed sex

But there wasnt a row of cubicles...just individual bathrooms, with locks

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 18/07/2020 22:56

Oh so what chloe said
