It appears that Scotland are likely to run with a census that centres gender ideology instead of sex, but does so in a way that remains under the radar.

The attached image contains the NRS response, on behalf of the Scottish government, to Murray, Blackburn, Mackenzie.

Twitter thread here:

twitter.com/mbmpolicy/status/1284118531911581697?s=21

This approach is devious. The main question will appear wholly straightforward and will ask for what most will assume to be sex in a simple, binary question.

Only those who consult the guidance notes will realise that the question does not refer to sex, but instead to “gender identity”.

This would appear to be yet another means of introducing gender ideology into the mainstream by stealth. In a few years (indeed it has already happened) it will be stated that the question has been asked that way for years without problem. Reversing it will be near to impossible. The reality is, of course, that any problems with this approach would take years to surface. They are almost impossible to identify, especially when the meaning of words such as “woman” have been changed to include men.

I think it may be prudent to campaign against this, and demonstrate the obvious problems with this approach by direct action. Inspired by ManFriday, and discussion in the linked twitter thread, I suggest that a movement should be created where women in Scotland should consider identifying as men on the day the census is taken.

TressiliansStone - The certainly seem to be doing a lot of good work and now that there is the Legal Feminist as well here's hoping that legal reality will achieve what campaigning hasn't.

Like JKR getting an apology from The Day.

Only problem is we are all going to have to contribute to a lot of fund raisers as court cases as expensive.

SerendipityJane · 26/07/2020 19:05

@Apileofballyhoo

How the fuck are governments going to plan for medical needs and pensions and prison places and maternity services and I don't know what else, if they can't even count how many men and women they have in a country? Numpties. It's the height of stupidity.
Maybe they have no intention of planning for any of that. Makes sense.

I think people need to get with the new world order, where the government is really just a mechanism to funnel taxpayers money into the chums brigade, and fuck everything and everyone else.

Anyone who voted for Boris and the Boys expecting anything else must have been asleep these past 20 years.

Well there is that.

thirdfiddle · 26/07/2020 22:47

The sex question with the notes - is it then a free form text box? Or M/F tickbox? If the latter then loads of trans activists are going to object to it too as no NB option. If free form is there room for "gender critical- sex female" or something? If it's asking for gender identity M/F I can't fill it in so would definitely need to get paper copy.

FemaleAndLearning · 27/07/2020 12:54

Beamur request a paper copy then you can add notes in margin you cant do this online. Also the act of requesting a paper copy us an inconvenience to the government and costs them time and money so it is a non-violent act of disobedience.
Letsnotdothis I've said yes to requesting paper copy on your thread.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/08/2021 13:32

I realise this is an old thread but

New from NRS: transgender individuals can self-identify in next year's Scottish census, no need for a GRC. The England & Wales census was forced to revise similar guidance after a court challenge

FFS

ArabellaScott · 31/08/2021 13:40

That'll be really useful for planning provision, then.

Over600Ecalypts · 31/08/2021 15:37

The NRS have also written to Fair Play for Women to confirm it:

littlbrowndog · 31/08/2021 15:40

Yep. So now I can say I am a man on the census

We are a small nation.

Sex matters

Just let it slide.
The higher the # of people checking woman or female, the more money women’s services and charities get. Talking things like breast cancer research vs prostate cancer research. Domestic violence shelters. Etc

MtF trans far outnumber FtM trans, so this allowable bit of fudge will only result in less money for men’s services and more for women’s.

So just let it go. Checking off man or male would take away from women. Refusing to answer would take away from women.

Cailleach1 · 31/08/2021 16:32

@ListeningQuietly

Which days of the week is Philip Bunce male ? What day of the week is the census on ?
Or, what time you fill in the form on the day of the census. You could have blue jeans on and obviously feel like a man at 12 midnight, but then change into a pink nightie at one minute after midnight and immediate feel like a woman.

Go further and trans every man in the house ? Even more money for us.

This is a better plan.

Wonder whether anyone’ll bother taking them to court. I feel like Scotland is a lost cause, government-wise, but it’s been really cheering to see so many women around the world standing up for Marion Millar.

It's just so STUPID!

Why do we pretend that sex doesn't matter? Gender might matter a great deal to some people, but that doesn't mean that sex is irrelevant!

Remoteso · 31/08/2021 19:40

Great plan getting all the males to identify as girls/women. No consequences either as they're men

Really is totally farcical- what's the point of data made up of falsehoods.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/08/2021 19:46

It's pointless holding a census at all if the information gathered isn't going to be accurate.

In fact, it's dangerous. It will lead to planning of health provision etc based on erroneous information which could lead to loss of lives.

Scotland needs every bloke to identify as a TW.

When they end up with a population of 99% "female", and 1% (trans) male (or whatever), they'll have to do it properly.

littlbrowndog · 31/08/2021 19:47

Yes exactly.

Oh - sorry. Someone's already suggested it.

As you were, people.

littlbrowndog · 31/08/2021 19:53

But what if some days you are a man and other days a women and on the other day a non binary

Tick all the boxes?
malloo · 31/08/2021 20:06

I can't get behind lying on the Census. Doesn't strike me as an effective technique to just put lies on top of lies, it's too important as a dataset. Requesting a paper copy is a good idea. But there must be something more we can do now? All write to NRS? Who is actually responsible for making this decision?

littlbrowndog · 31/08/2021 21:24

From Murray Blackburn below

Despite warnings from eighty of the UK’s leading quantitative social scientists, the Scottish Government intends to press ahead with guidance that advises respondents that the longstanding sex question in Scotland’s 2022 census can be answered based on self-defined gender identity. This is despite the fact that there is a new, separate census question on gender identity.

When legislating to introduce the new question on gender identity via the Census (Amendment) (Scotland) Act 2019, the Scottish Government also sought to change the definition of ‘sex’ in the Census Act 1920. During the bill’s parliamentary passage, the then Cabinet Secretary admitted that they had not intended to conflate the concepts of sex and gender identity and amended the Bill accordingly. However, this guidance represents a de facto conflation of the two concepts.
