Could you trust a doctor who denies that biological sex matters?

Fortunately not mine... I'd be out of there like a shot! But a doctor I know of on Twitter who is trans shares very little about women and anything about trans issues. And this week he basically said that sex was a construct and gender the superior quality. It's not H, but is another one in the North West.
Would you trust a doctor who says there's no biological difference between transwomen and women? It worries me that he places his ideology ahead of his professionalism.

No.

Would not want to have as a GP someone who clearly could not pass a basic anatomy exam and knew nothing about genetics. I wouldn't consider him to have the basic competence necessary to do his job.

Highwind · 16/07/2020 21:36

Well I would certainly go to him if I wanted my prostate examined. He might have some difficulty finding it, but I am sure it is there somewhere. If he doesn’t find it then he is clearly transphobic.

Chiochan · 16/07/2020 21:37

Sure, not problem. You could trust them about as much as you could trust a doctor who insisted that crystals cure cancer.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 16/07/2020 21:38

There's a professor at LSHTM with a speciality in sexual and reproductive health who has bought into the sex is a construct piffle and she's not the only medic in a comparable position to espouse this.

PronounssheRa · 16/07/2020 21:42

No. A doctor who doesn't believe biological sex matters could end up misdiagnosing and mistreating.

Common conditions like asthma can only be understood and treated if we take sex into account.

I’d sooner visit a witch doctor.

scienceisfun · 16/07/2020 21:45

I wouldnt go to them for anything.

PennyNotSoWise · 16/07/2020 21:45

Absolutely not.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 16/07/2020 21:49

Nope

MrsFogi · 16/07/2020 21:50

No way - I would prefer not to go to the doctor than to consult someone who I would assume hates women. Also I wouldn't trust the rest of the GP practice if they were happy to have such a person in their team.

Mum2jenny · 16/07/2020 21:50

Not a chance

KingOfDogShite · 16/07/2020 21:51

I’d struggle to believe he was actually a doctor to be honest. He certainly wouldn’t be someone I’d trust with my health.

GaraMedouar · 16/07/2020 21:52

Absolutely not.

justanotherneighinparadise · 16/07/2020 21:52

Well if I went to him with a sex based issue then I’d obviously be concerned he’d have no clue how to help me. I’ve certainly had to talk to Male GPs about pregnancy related problems in the past, I would hope they understood that the pregnant person infront of them was female.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/07/2020 21:54

Doesn't seem the best person to see for cervical cancer. Or erectile dysfunction. After all, sex is just a construct.

TheLastSaola · 16/07/2020 21:54

There was a medic in my college at university who was a hard line Protestant and denied that evolution was real.

By all accounts she was an excellent student and I'm sure a dedicated and talented doctor.

Some people are capable of holding beliefs sacrosanct whilst acting professionally even where that contradicts their beliefs.

I judge their character though.

Winesalot · 16/07/2020 21:55

No. Anyone who is willing to allow patients to deny sex and the differences needed in even diagnosing a heart attack is not the GP for me.

DeRigueurMortis · 16/07/2020 21:55

No.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 16/07/2020 21:59

To add to my above comment. I don't care if the Doctor (XX or XY) wants to wear dresses and call themselves Sharon or wear a kilt and call themselves Fergus, or wear trousers or scrubs etc. I do care if they understand Science and if a request a doctor of either sex, they understand the request.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 16/07/2020 22:02

I'm genuinely concerned about the care that medic will be giving.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 16/07/2020 22:05

No. And while I don't mind a male doc for most things there are some things I would only want a female for. Would it be possible to say that or would one be visited by the police for mentioning the elephant in the room?

CigarsofthePharoahs · 16/07/2020 22:06

Given that a good understanding of anatomy is vital to being a good doctor -
No. No I'd trust them even less than the GP I saw who Googled my symptoms on front of me during the appointment.

happydappy2 · 16/07/2020 22:08

Of course not!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/07/2020 22:08

No.

In men, disbelieving that sex exists seems to strongly correlate with misogyny.

And medicine is based on science, and figuring out what is wrong with someone requires common sense and logic. A gender cultist has no way of applying any of those.

Xanthangum · 16/07/2020 22:09

How would you know?

Serious question, turn up at the surgery, GP has a look, you present as the sex you clearly are, no mention of any trans- or gender- related issue.. how would you know their views?
