Grin

A Dworkin quote.

His retweet of JKR is still there, he hasn’t deleted it or recanted it, that I can see?

I don’t think his retweet was anything to do with the TWAW / TWANW discussion but was agreeing that women shouldn’t be abused, attacked, or shamed for talking.

To then turn round and respond to the abusive dog whistle “TERF“ (“You should address the TERF tweet”) with “Yes. Trans women are women.” is actually just more abuse of JKR. He is craven, and hypocritical.

He’s a wordsmith and knows well what the results of his craft are.

Another ‘hero’ sullied.

I very much liked the response from Fionne Orlander

I don't have any problem with him saying TWAW, though I doubt he believes it. People say it to be polite. An it's fine to believe it as long as you're happy to speak up and say people like jk have a right to their opinion.

But responding to a tweet calling her a terf and ignoring that fact is shocking.

I am

Okay sorry I couldn’t see the tweet SK was responding to. Disappointing but not surprising.

JK: thank you for speaking up for poor women against the middle class and elite. It is much appreciated in the real world, regardless of what Twitter thinks.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and mine is that Stephen King has just been significantly less than gentlemanly.

He MUST know what effect those two tweets would have had. He MUST understand what is happening to JK right now. Interestingly he follows but 188 people and she is amongst them so they must have some kind of connection, sone correspondence - he did a very ungentlemanly thing and I really hope someone in rea5life is pointing that out to him.

What a lot of cowards there are about at the moment

I am just going to point out, again, that actor James Dreyfus has always been a supporter.

twat! he knew exactly the effect the effect RT her and then later saying TWAW would have

he'd have been better off saying nothing

It's disappointing to see SK show obeisance but I'm less upset by this than other people here. As I read his TWAW tweet, SK gave the absolutely minimum to throw off the baying mob. He knows this and they know it.

I can't help feel that this happening in such a public way lessens the meaning of TWAW. It's become slightly more "the incantation you must chant to keep the evil at bay".

Report
hellandhairnets · 29/06/2020 08:37

He has made the whole thing infinitely worse. The baying mob are all positively gleeful about it. It's a real "stick the boot in' bullying now, ha ha "she trusted and thanked him then he turned on her, hurrah" stuff.

Ugly. Very very ugly sentiments indeed. Makes me sick to my stomach.

@PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg

That sort of WOULD make sense - he disagrees with JKR but supports her right to express an opinion.

I don't think for a minute he believes TWAW, mind you.

I agree. Plus he's supportive of women who have experienced domestic violence.

I think when she thanked him so directly he freaked out. Leaving the rt stand alone would have been enough. He may decide to stand up yet tho.

I can’t believe that he lumbered unknowingly into the debate then peed his pants when the anime army squealed.

Report
SunsetBeetch · 29/06/2020 08:48

Maybe he just can't be bothered to argue with them?

Report
SerenityNowwwww · 29/06/2020 08:48

So ignore them. They tire themselves out. He doesn’t have to worry about book and film deals.

Nope. He knew once upon a time. What a disappointment.

I always thought he was crap. Even as a child I thought his stories were a bit ‘teenage boy’ and daft.

I don't know. This an issue that really hits me hard, having been on the receiving end of male violence and sexual abuse and also having a sibling who has transitioned. They are now burning all of Rowling's books. I know if I state my actual feelings about the issue, I will never see or hear from the person again, and family gatherings will no longer be possible. It's like being held hostage by someone else's feelings.

And every time I see TRAs pile on to a celebrity, it hurts. Seeing King back down just reinforces it.

Apparently JKR has unfollowed SK on twitter. That is a shame. It shows she was hurt by this.

I worry about anyone getting drawn into this while being under intense public scrutiny.

Report
GingerBeverage · 29/06/2020 09:20

I was expecting this. There's a reason some people put "RTs don't mean endorsement" in their headers.
Next time I hope JKR waits longer before responding.
The guy can't even remember writing Cujo because of the drugs, and was in a major car accident - he could retweet David Duke and it wouldn't mean anything other than a random reflex.

More likely, sh*t his pants.

I think it's good. It shows him (and everyone) exactly what she thinks of him. It shows him that he has sacrificed honour and integrity for the baying mob. He will feel it, because deep inside he knows.

She will get over it, and rise again. He will sink, morally, ethically. He's a wimp and has given into the bullies. Good riddance.

You think Okay, I get it, I'm prepared for the worst, but you hold out that small hope, see, and that's what fucks you up. That's what kills you

One of my favourite SK quotes

I thought it was very apt

I notice he didn't reply to the question asked about trans women in women's sport. He has obviously run for cover.

Ah what a shame. Fool me twice and all.

But then I guess that's easy for me to say - I'm not public with my views because I'd lose my job. I don't even have a reputation, fan base or lots of liberal friends and connections to lose.

I hope Jo's alright.
