Angry

That Venn diagram is just really confusing. Wtaf are they trying to say?

Also: Coppafeel? Really???

Coatandhat · 26/06/2020 12:07

Judging by the colours in the diagram, desperately trying to include a rainbow for this weekend? Blue for male and pink for female stereotyping?

justcallmepeter · 26/06/2020 12:12

I'm wondering who to ask about this 'assigned at birth' thing 🤔

How does a Dr or midwife decide? Is there a quota - so many males & females per day? Do they alternate 'genders' - by hospital, town, county?

So many questions........ 🤯
The real question is, who came up with this rubbish and why do charities use it in their literature?

SueGoesOutWithOtherGuys · 26/06/2020 12:13

Coppafeel? Really?

One cannot 'cop a feel' of one's own breasts.

Someone else can do it, but it's only ever done against the will of the girl or woman.

I wonder what sort of person thought this would be a good name for a breast cancer charity - answers on a postcard, please.

LittleCabbage · 26/06/2020 12:14

Ugh. I have no energy for this crap any more. Just ugh.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 26/06/2020 12:15

Are they trying to say that some people (both male and female) are born with breast tissue but not others? Confused

iVampire · 26/06/2020 12:16

I thought everyone had breast tissue. And that although breast cancer is much, much rarer in men, it is still possible, so it is helpful when support charities include everyone with this cancer (perhaps not for every service they offer, but for enough to make sure no one is left adrift)

So the sodding inaccuracy of that diagram is enough to turn me away

CoppaFeel is aimed at the u30s. From the name I briefly got confused with the testicular charity ‘Check’EmLads’ which seems to be tapping the same vibe. There does I think need to be plurality of approach - there are many cancer awareness and support charities and it’s right that they play to different audiences

AbsintheFriends · 26/06/2020 12:18

I think the charity was set up by a young woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer in her early 20s and felt that most of the info and support out there was targeted at older women. So the name and tone is specifically aimed at a young demographic. I guess they're trying to be relevant for pride month.

But that Venn diagram is bonkers.

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 26/06/2020 12:19

I just checked their site (I get the monthly reminders to check my breasts), and their woke bits are all fudged words with no meaning, but on specifics like how to check, why you should check etc.. it clearly defines risk factors by sex. Presumably because it's a material fact when talking about breast cancer. Maybe woke-folk care more about inclusivity statements and removing the word "women", than actually reading through what the charity does.... Who could have guessed.

HDDD · 26/06/2020 12:19

I am so sick of this 'assigned at birth' shit

EverardDigby · 26/06/2020 12:25

So only about a quarter of women have breast tissue? Okay Hmm

Highperbolay · 26/06/2020 12:28

Coppafeel is a fantastic charity which was started by an amazing woman called Kris Hallenga who was diagnosed with de novo Stage 4 breast cancer at the age of 23. That was 11 years ago and miraculously she is still alive but remains incurable. The reason that she was diagnosed so late was because she didn't know the signs of breast cancer and her GP had turned her away saying she was too young. So she set up Coppafeel to raise awareness and it has turned into a massive charity.

However, I have noticed the 'rainbow' stuff coming in a bit recently. I have absolutely no problem with raising awareness of breast cancer risks amongst trans people, and obviously both males and females can get breast cancer.

But I saw this picture on their FB page the other day and totally rolled my eyes. Of course biology is what defines what a woman is - if its not biology, then what is it? And you can also raise awareness of breast cancer with trans people without making stupid statements denying biology.

Oh sorry I have cross posted there with a few people about the origins of the charity!

littlbrowndog · 26/06/2020 12:36

OFGS

Messages like this need to be clear. Wha5 is a cisgender woman 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

RoyalCorgi · 26/06/2020 12:36

How many people reading that will know what "cisgender" means? It's woeful.

I've always hated the name "Coppafeel" for that charity. I dare say it's a decent enough charity but the name is really childish.

OneEpisode · 26/06/2020 12:44

Thanks for posting those screenshots hyper. The third one has “mastectomy, top surgery” included separately in the list. As if they were different operations?

Whatsnewpussyhat · 26/06/2020 12:45

So underneath the ridiculous diagram is says that one of the risk factors of breast cancer is the 'gender assigned at birth', and yes it looks like they think only a small amount of the population has breast tissue.

OneEpisode · 26/06/2020 12:47

Sorry my bad phone typing again. Thank you ”Highperbolay”, I saw the name, enjoyed it, and my phone autocorrected.,

WipeYourFeet · 26/06/2020 12:48

That is all just so confusing!!
I'm GC, but I understand a lot of places mean biologically female when they say AFAB etc. But that Venn diagram has me confused. Confused is my DH just as likely to get breast cancer as me? Is that what it says?

And as for that photo & flowery words about biology doesn't define a woman - well we're back into that How do you define a woman without it being a circular definition thing again. Hmm

Ragtime69 · 26/06/2020 12:55

I don't understand.. surely everyone is born with breast tissue?

FatPantsON · 26/06/2020 12:57

It's only one group that have to worry about men people "copping a feel" though eh.

purplebutterflybiscuits · 26/06/2020 13:18

My undestanding of that diagram is that only the group of people who are assigned BOTH male AND female at birth have breast tissue. Anyone only assigned one or the other gender (everyone??) doesn't have breast tissue???

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 26/06/2020 13:19

The issue I have with this is that if you want to reach most men to educate them about breast cancer this will fail badly.

It is an important topic that is worthy of grown-up langauge.

A sportsman would have better reach.

MrsJamin · 26/06/2020 13:22

This is so so disappointing. What a ridiculous thing to say, that being a woman isn't defined by biology! They are talking horseshit for the woke generation and confusing everyone. Also they need to Google "how to make a Venn diagram". Hmm

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 26/06/2020 13:39

Breast cancer doesn't care what your gender identity is, so this 'cisgender' talk is very mis-placed.

And oh, look, they compare transwomen to men for the expected rate of cancer - pointing out that it's the hormones that seem to increase the risk, and that mastectomy reduces it.

Christ. How to make a simple thing complicated.
