I could weep, I really could.
Leeds City Council is planning a Drag Queen Story Hour with “Aida H Dee”, to take place tomorrow, 22nd June.

Local hero, Councillor Sarah Field, is requesting any comments or complaints you may have, to assist her in objecting to this event. Email: [email protected]

Leeds again?!?

You'd think after the safeguarding scandals they've had, they would want to redeem themselves?

Doyoumind · 21/06/2020 14:01

Quite apart from the fact it's completely innapropriate, you can bet if they were asked, all the children would say this was just a strange woman in funny clothes and makeup.

They wouldn't even think it was a man and they certainly won't be thinking "Now I know all about gay culture and can understand that men can be in relationships with other men." It teaches nothing about acceptance or diversity.

TinselAngel · 21/06/2020 14:13

I remember being carried screaming out of a seaside clown show by my Nan when I was little. I'd have been really scared of somebody in all that make up, as a child.

bloodyhamabeads · 21/06/2020 14:15

I had a personal reply copying in others.
I sent a lovely one back thanking her for her support.

PumbaasCucumbas · 21/06/2020 14:20

I wonder if she had her own concerns by inviting people to email/comment?

picklemewalnuts · 21/06/2020 14:20

Mine:

Hello,
I’d like to raise concerns about the planned drag time story hour.
My concerns are in part general- why is an adult entertainment form considered suitable for a children’s story time/what exactly are children expected to learn about from a drag queen, it isn’t a sexual orientation, more of a job, so why not have a female firefighter or gay foster carers?
Specifically this drag queen raises concerns as his name is a play on learning disabilities and his social media presence raises safeguarding issues. His page shows photos of other people’s children, makes jokes about paedophilia, and sexually explicit jokes. Why would this seem a good idea of a children’s activity?

There are so many people who have such a lot to offer children in terms of widening their experience of diverse people- why would a man dressed as a parody of a woman, who works in adult entertainment be your choice?

Are libraries allowed to open now? And events for groups of people from different households? Or is this an on line thing where children are encouraged to go online and google their new ‘children’s entertainer’?

Hopefully this link works

here’s a performance from earlier this month. From what I can tell it’s just a mediocre panto dame really, not exactly sure why everyone is falling over themselves to go to these?

@TinselAngel

I remember being carried screaming out of a seaside clown show by my Nan when I was little. I'd have been really scared of somebody in all that make up, as a child.
DS used to get very annoyed by people in costume and would tell them off (if we didn’t distract him first). ‘You’re not a banana!’ ‘You’re not superman!’ ‘You’re not the Yo Bear!’ ‘You’re not a dinosaur!’

He would have had a fit.

Where is the educational value in that clip? And what the hell was the word of the day - coat on about?

stumbledin · 21/06/2020 15:15

Was going to ask if Leeds Resisters were still active - but they are - and are tweeting an alert twitter.com/LeedsReSisters/status/1274630054950178817

ProbablyFault · 21/06/2020 15:47

I've just seen on FB that this has been cancelled! Due to unforeseen circumstances...

SerenityNowwwww · 21/06/2020 16:02

Unforeseen circumstances - that people would see and complain? Hope it is a dead trend.

Dicotyledon · 21/06/2020 16:05

Yes!

I asked one of my local librarians (pre-covid) if they would let a drag queen do story time and she looked at me like I was nuts. Dudley apparently has its head screwed on.

StealthPolarBear · 21/06/2020 16:09

Excellent

That’s so brilliant! Cllr Sarah Field is a great woman. With everything else going on in Leeds, and I agree that there must be some shady shit, I’m glad we have her

I don’t think there is anything quite as sinister- it’s just Leeds is woke central.

PelicanDeuce · 21/06/2020 17:07

Cllr Field got it cancelled. She was up most of the night putting a rocket up the people in charge. She’s also put in a FOI request and formal complaint asking for an immediate investigation.
