“The so-called "rough sex gone wrong" defence will be outlawed in new domestic abuse legislation a justice minister has told MPs.”

Agreed AnyFucker. To see justice done for Natalie Connolly would be a small step in the right direction.

Collidascope · 17/06/2020 11:28

Good. And yes, a disgrace that it was ever allowed.

TorkTorkBam · 17/06/2020 11:29

@AnyFucker

Good start. It should be applied retrospectively and the punishments for men who used this defence be alteted aprropriately.
Yes.
MoltenLasagne · 17/06/2020 12:17

Fantastic news - absurd that it was ever allowed.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/06/2020 12:32

Fantastic. Well done We Can't Consent to This Thanks - showing how feminist campaigns on Mumsnet can really take off, after it was started here.

Datun · 17/06/2020 12:38

Anyone who believes a woman wants sex that's "rough" enough to kill them when it "goes wrong" is a deluded misogynist.

Exactly.

This is good news.

No one should have been in the appalling position of needing to campaign for this outcome in the first place.

But huge congratulations to the women who did. All that hard work must have taken its toll.

It can't be easy to immerse yourself in this fresh version of utter hatred of women, and remain unscathed.

Just gonna play devil’s advocate - what if it was the truth and both parties consented to it? It would make sense for it to be classed as manslaughter anyway tbh but murder for people who consented makes me uneasy. The repercussions for people in the BDSM community could be big. Is there any nuance to the law? Like if there’s record of recorded consent?

Annasgirl · 17/06/2020 15:17

Abd right on cue, here come the apologists. 🙄🙄🙄

Annasgirl · 17/06/2020 15:18

And,

BaruFisher · 17/06/2020 15:23

If you are partaking in a form of BDSM dangerous enough to have the potential to kill someone just to get off then that is murder. Plain and simple.
Great news that this is being brought in.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 17/06/2020 15:24

I'm not engaging with that shit. Get some therapy for your internalized misogyny.

Yes, absolutely this.

Women's lives are not collateral damage in your private difficulty in reaching orgasm. Get therapy, or buy a better vibrator.

SerenityNowwwww · 17/06/2020 15:32

I don't think 'they asked to be murdered' is a legal defence is it?

I haven't double-checked that and I'm not certain even if you had a drawn up contract - 'I wish to be tortured, abused and left bleeding to death whilst Dave eats a pizza and sleeps off his hangover'.

Because some of the trials I have seen have involved behaviour that could very reasonably be expected to cause permanent and disastrous physical damage, of not death. And yet the 'oopsy, went to faaaaarrrrrr'.

Oh, I'm * crying my eyes out for the BDSM community, the poor things.

Not.

Oxyiz · 17/06/2020 16:19

Maybe the BDSM community could try not to kill each other?

And understand that if they do, they will be responsible.

There are other ways to get kicks.

DandyMandy · 17/06/2020 17:17

Great news but horrible that this existed in the first place. Funny how you never see men killed by women during "sex gone wrong". I wonder why that is? Because it doesn't happen and women aren't depraved like men are. BDSM is abuse, plain and simple. I've read plenty of things about how "Doms" don't even care about consent and how no isn't in their vocabulary. They're rapists and unfortunately rape and abuse of women has been normalised. This might be the way back though. Fingers crossed.

SerenityNowwwww · 17/06/2020 17:19

Who first came up with this? I’ve only been aware of this as a defence in legal cases over the past few years. Was there the ‘first case’ recorded anywhere?

There was a man in the us who killed his secret gay lover. He was elderly I seem to remember and on the closet. He beat his lover to death playing a nice game of ‘head the 2x10’.

Thank you thank you all! Fiona from WCCTT here, we were quietly pleased with the news yesterday. Over to the government to deliver.

We've seen huge relief and joy at the news - so many people clearly affected by the horror of these claims.

Who first came up with this? I’ve only been aware of this as a defence in legal cases over the past few years. Was there the ‘first case’ recorded anywhere?
The earliest in the UK is the man who killed Carole Califano, but tbh there are earlier cases where the language is almost too "old" to fit, but the claim is similar. e.g. a man in the early 60s I think who said the woman goaded him to strangle her as they had sex - he was convicted of "horseplay" manslaughter.

You can see the UK cases here, back to 1972: wecantconsenttothis.uk/

We have data on other countries too- here's an astonishing 1988 US news article

Oh - my - god. Thank you Fiona.

Sounds more sensible than allowing more sadistic bastards to get away with murdering women, certainly.

@FionaMackenzie well done Flowers
