Apparently men menstruate too...

^Hello, and thank you for getting in touch with us about our recent tweet to JK Rowling. We wanted to respond to everyone who has reached out to us to clarify our position on this issue.

We are longstanding supporters of the rights of women and girls on issues which affect them and believe it is important to keep having conversations around difficult topics such as this. Every person has the right to live their life free from the fear of violence, especially gender-based violence. The Body Shop has been an active campaigner on this issue since 1994.

The Body Shop’s position on menstruation in relation to trans and non-binary people is that we stand with ALL menstruators. People have periods – women, men and non-binary people. And plenty of women don’t. We value learning from everyone’s experience and we believe the conversation needs to go forwards, not backwards.

We disagree with JK Rowling’s view and wanted to demonstrate our support for trans and non-binary people. We understand why addressing the tweet to JK Rowling’s personal account has been interpreted as an attack on her as an individual, and as a domestic abuse survivor. That was absolutely not our intention. We didn’t get the tone right on this one and we do want to engage respectfully and constructively on these important issues.

We believe it is important to keep having conversations around difficult topics such as this, and doing so constructively. We recognise that our engagement with JK Rowling on this occasion wasn’t as constructive as we would like to be. We all need to educate ourselves, be inclusive and stand together so that we can end the shame and stigma around periods for all menstruators and stand up for what is right in our society.

We stand by our position on the rights of trans and non-binary people, and we will learn from this execution to ensure our communication is stronger and more constructive in the future.

We hope this helps you understand our position. We appreciated hearing yours.^

Excellent response, finnmcool.

The Square no longer seems to be on Netflix. You got me all excited about it too!

WinterIsGone · 17/06/2020 20:09

The Square is free on Channel 4 on demand at the moment.
www.channel4.com/programmes/the-square/
We've just spent about an hour trying to get it to play on our Sony Bravia tv... but have been unsuccessful!

FantaOra · 17/06/2020 20:17

It's on Curzon home cinema if you can get that app on your TV. For 3.99 for the movie.

I think Channel 4 sometimes still list stuff they no longer have a license to show.

WinterIsGone · 17/06/2020 20:31

It's available for free on Channel 4 on demand for another 23 days.

YourVagesty · 17/06/2020 20:40

I think I've inspired myself to watch it again Grin

Anybody have any more news about what's happening in The Body Shop HQ? I wonder if their consultants have received any more comms from head office?

MashedSpud · 17/06/2020 20:45

I just asked my DH if he has periods.

He said “No”.

Today I bid a
final adieu to the shop
I no longer love

(draft one was sweary, and some of the words had more than 5 syllables)

SerenityNowwwww · 18/06/2020 10:52

Lordy the chat wait time is long today. I wonder why. I see they have pinned a tweet about DV. The comments arent going as I think they may have planned.

TheSingingKettle49 · 18/06/2020 11:37

If anyone gets through on the chat you should ask how many of the men’s toilet facilities in their head office & stores have sanitary disposal bins in them, after all if they really believe men have periods it would be remiss of them not to provide a hygienic way of disposing of their san pro.

SerenityNowwwww · 18/06/2020 11:53

They arent at HQ are they though - some call centre somewhere abroad I assume.

Anyone seen the petition? I can't say what or where can I? A petition site you often see.

GCGayDad · 18/06/2020 11:57

Superb response Finnmcool. And it is very articulate. Great stuff.

mamapants · 18/06/2020 11:58

I got a very short response :

Hello, and thank you for getting in touch with us.
We welcome hearing different points of view and your comments have been heard and noted by us.
From all of us at The Body Shop

SerenityNowwwww · 18/06/2020 12:00

They appear not to have a complaints procedure (just send an email to - genericemail@...).

Now I worked in the city and we had to have written complaints procedure to hand out to anyone who asked for it. Is this not the same for other industries?

SerenityNowwwww · 18/06/2020 12:00

They only listen to gushing tweets or men. Take your pick.
merrymouse · 18/06/2020 12:04

I got the same short response. I think they have had a lot of complaints and they don't really know what to do.

SerenityNowwwww · 18/06/2020 12:07

The chat switched off early last night too. Their ops haven't got a clue what they are saying.

Thisismytimetoshine · 18/06/2020 12:09

Haha! The fucking idiots can't even cobble together a party line that sorts remotely sane. Fingers in the ears instead 🤦‍♀️

MrBennsshop · 18/06/2020 12:15

@merrymouse

Me too. As a business, they seem to have been on the edge for years with their multiple discounts and permanent sales. As a company, I don't think they have a USP any more, their ethical credentials are long gone and many of their products are dated. Plenty of other, better place to buy from. So Body Shop, no more blusher, high SPF facial sunscreen or shampoo purchases from me.
YourVagesty · 18/06/2020 12:38

I've had no reply.

They must have thousands to work through, given their reply rate?!

justforthecake · 18/06/2020 13:07

The reason they want to use the word menstruater is simple

They want the world to accept that trans men=men and transwoman=woman, that you can and do change your sex because you want to.

They therefore do not like the simple fact that only women have the necessary biological parts to enable menstruation.

I don't menstruate as my womb is gone but I am still a woman, a transwoman May or may not menstruate but men and trans women will never ever menstruate.

But if trans women=women then companies and others that want to prove their whole credentials call women menstruators so they don't get accused of offending the tra lobby. Women's views and opinions don't matter only the women views matter.
Back in the real world people generally think all this is stupid word snobbery.

I find it offensive that 50% of the population are being slighted to appease a very small vocal lobby.

SerenityNowwwww · 18/06/2020 13:09

A teensy minority in fact. The number of trans men versus trans women is minute (which considering the number of girls attending gender clinics is interesting). And how many of these appear to disbelieve biology? I see more male-bodied persons debating their 'periods' and if 'this is the month!!!'.
