Body shop have replied to my email expressing my disgust at their stance and attack on JKR.
They admit to 'getting it wrong', but don't won't accept the simple fact that it is women that menstruate.

Women, a forbidden word in Body Shop head quarters it would seem. The sex that dare not speak its name. Wonder how their female staff feel about all these verbal acrobatics?

Veterinari · 15/06/2020 19:04

Don't they realise that their dedicated 'men's' range must also be transphobic? They're implying only biological men require these products....

I have never, ever seen a man in any of their shops. Even at Christmas, when some men panic at the last minute and grab any generic smelly stuff for their mothers.
How can they not know this?! How fucking dumb can you actually be and still head up a major corporation?

runrunrunrunt · 15/06/2020 19:09

I honestly now think this 'debate' is completely over.

There will be a time when many young trans people have changed their mind and start to speak out but sadly I feel we'll all be in our box until that point.

It's horrifying but unless you are JK Rowling or similarly financially independent, speaking out is becoming harder and harder.

waytheleaveswork · 15/06/2020 19:10

As soon as I opened that email response I cam straight here to find you all!

WHAT, THE. FUCK.

"it wasn't our intention" then 5 paragraphs of condescending justification. No real apology for the misuse of their platform. Oh my god.

I can't believe anyone would be so bloody stupid to send that out.

Regardless of their intentions, or whatever you think about the JK/Trans debate, it is staggeringly shit marketing and PR. Am astounded.

waytheleaveswork · 15/06/2020 19:13

Also that email was definitely written by a man.

Sounds like my abusive ex-husband.

DO NOT GASLIGHT ME, YOU SHITTY BUBBLE BATH SHOP.

I am SO GLAD Mumsnet is available for me to rant on.

I NEVER USE CAPITAL LETTERS IN POSTS

Ritascornershop · 15/06/2020 19:28

You know what amazes me? It took them bloody days to come up with that!! They had time to back down, phrase something respectfully, but no, after days of thought and rewrites, and checking with the boss, they came up with “menstruators” and men have periods. Fucking unbelievable.

I hope the mass media picks up on this. Let’s all support local craftspeople who make their own bathbombs and soaps.

@catnuzzle

I emailed [email protected]

He's their CEO.

I emailed him, and got the same generic response everyone else got. Evidently the office junior deals with all correspondence.

Thisismytimetoshine · 15/06/2020 19:31

Did you get a different response, btw Rose?

RoseByAnyOtherName · 15/06/2020 19:44

@ Thisismytimetoshine

I got the same response.

BTW there is a second thread on the exactly the same topic, started minutes earlier:

In a massive twist, it's been revealed that the BS currently have no female members on their board.

beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/01284170/officers

I am shocked, I tell you. Perhaps that's why they can identify men but not women, & don't actually sell anything for women.

whatisheupto · 15/06/2020 19:45

Thank you @Datun. And @Caradune, very good point! Aiming their shaving products at 'Men' is transphobic.

ShinyFootball · 15/06/2020 20:14

'In a massive twist, it's been revealed that the BS currently have no female members on their board.'

Hmm

What would Anita roddick make of that?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 16/06/2020 22:42

It was her own fault for selling it to L'Oréal. It stopped being the Body Shop at that point.

FreddoFrogAddict · 17/06/2020 08:05

Can anyone recommend a good bobyshop alternative that's not too expensive? I've used their stuff for decades, but never again.

I'd also be interested to know if anyone can recommend similar cruelty free perfumes, there's are the only ones I buy!

There's a thread OP!

PumbaasCucumbas · 17/06/2020 14:09

I’d check out the other thread, I’m not sure they are cruelty-free any more (Especially when selling in countries that require animal testing such as China I believe)

022828MAN · 17/06/2020 14:49

Oh brill, thanks!

This mess they have created on Twitter has consumed all my free time for the last few days. It's infuriating. I tweeted with a rough idea of how much I had been putting in their tills for the last 18 years, also sent a more precise breakdown to the CEO. My response was, we welcome different points of views 😡 my response was rather scathing in tone.

Me - £40/month (all make up & toiletries) plus more at Xmas/birthdays etc family member similar, made a conservative estimate that my family alone have probably consumed around £80-100k since the 80's. I feel sick seeing that in black and white. And considering I'm 33, dm is 54 - they've just lost an awful lot from us. I've been warning everyone I know that if I receive any bs (bullshit/body shop) they will be promptly returned.

Onthebrink87 · 18/06/2020 10:16

Oh and does anyone know of any products similar to their coconut range? I can only find products eat smell very sickly and artificial! - but rest assured I'll embrace my own natural scent before I go near that shit ever again.
