Body shop have replied to my email expressing my disgust at their stance and attack on JKR.
They admit to 'getting it wrong', but don't won't accept the simple fact that it is women that menstruate.

I've just got the fucking insulting non-apology response too. I told them I hoped that they would be dealing with the transphobia in their shaving range and correctly describing that range as aimed at beard growers. And that I didn't think blatant misogyny aimed at their main customer base was a good look.

boatyardblues · 15/06/2020 18:11

Someone said a couple of days ago that it could be their Ratner moment. If they’d got away with the tweet (big if), this email seals it.

ChubbyPigeon · 15/06/2020 18:12

its funny how transwomen are allowed words to define them but not women.

Its a vile response by a vile company. How can they not see how reductive and dehumanising calling women menstruators is?

Also they clearly dont stand with all menstruators as a lot of said menstruators are saying call us fucking women

Whereslang · 15/06/2020 18:12

Yup, I just got this too. They're digging holes, and not the constructive type. Absolute fucking idiots. Men have periods?! I can't believe they wrote that sentence. Certainly has not helped me feel any better about what they did, they've only incensed me further. I'll now be muttering all night...

Chiochan · 15/06/2020 18:13

ok, so i gave up at 'people have periods'.

wankers

Floisme · 15/06/2020 18:16

I'd like to ask every single one of those fools what they would do if they had a son who started bleeding from his genitals. Wonder how many would say, 'Don't worry son, you're just a person who menstruates'.

KaronAVyrus · 15/06/2020 18:16

They really can go and fuck themselves

Do they have any idea how utterly offensive it is to call women menstruaters? Bunch of gobshites.

Furx · 15/06/2020 18:22

Sums up how I feel tbh
ErnDincum · 15/06/2020 18:22

I told them I hoped that they would be dealing with the transphobia in their shaving range and correctly describing that range as aimed at beard growers far too gentile a term. they call women menstruaters when they don't sell any period products, so it's only fair to describe men as ejaculators, even for stuff like beard products. I'm going into town tomorrow so I hope they're open. I'll be cutting up my loyalty card and leaving it on the counter.

Shedbuilder · 15/06/2020 18:24

Dear Body Shop, women don't have to be inclusive. The Equality Act categorises women by sex as a protected group and we are permitted to maintain single-sex groups. facilities and services. Because of our sex, most of us will menstruate at some point in our lives. Show me a man who menstruates. No more Body Shop products for me. And I'll tell every woman I know why. Let's see how important women's money is to the survival of your business.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/06/2020 18:28

Remind me who their core customer is?.

hypernormal · 15/06/2020 18:30

Just had this response and in a blind rage at being called a 'menstruator'. Fuck me, it really is like something out of Gilead. I didn't think they could make it any worse, but they have.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 15/06/2020 18:36

According to twitter they refer to men on their website but the word women had been eradicated. If that's true then they clearly know the difference!
I won't be spending in there again at any rate. Men do not have periods. Fucking moronic statement from the Body Shop

Shedbuilder · 15/06/2020 18:37

I think the Body Shop is a franchise model, isn't it? I wonder what the franchisees will think when the chain is boycotted because of a statement put out by their woke HQ. I don't really know the demographic of their customers but I shop there and I'm getting on. Has there ever been a case in which franchisees have sued the franchise owner for ballsing up so spectacularly on the PR front that they've gone out of business?

Bluebellbike · 15/06/2020 18:37

Seems the Board of The Body Shop is all male.

Datun · 15/06/2020 18:45

@whatisheupto

They mean women who identify as men. So they're still women, otherwise they wouldn't be called transmen. Men can't be transmen.

They have decided to call all women, every last one of them menstruators because of a handful of transmen.

They have decided to 'take a position' on menstruation, even though they're in the business of moisturisation.

I'm assuming they could just as easily 'take a position' on cervical cancer, and call us cervix havers.

Or take a position on anything else to do with women, and reduce them to a biological function.

What you wont see, is them doing the same to men.

Datun · 15/06/2020 18:46

Because they know perfectly well who menstruates and who doesn't

ProfessorSillyStuff · 15/06/2020 18:48

the only person I know who was so happy to push the "men have periods" tone was my psychotic, misogynistic, abusive exboyfriend... he was over the moon to hear of all this and just had to tell me?!

ShinyFootball · 15/06/2020 18:51

They are active around gender based violence...

I see. So that is violence against all genders, perpetrated by all genders, then?

They also use women and girls just before that, so they seem a little confused?

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 15/06/2020 18:55

Part of what got me so annoyed anout the BS's response to JKR was the flippancy of it. She had gone to considerable effort to research her POV before publicly announcing it, & write a pretty thoughtful piece, maintaining & explaining that she's not against anyone identifying as trans, & the BS basically said "you're wrong. Here's a bath bomb to help you get over your DV trauma. And you need to read more." Definitely written by someone who thought it was funny.

BS indeed.

HandsOffMyRights · 15/06/2020 18:59

Looks like somebody glugged too much Dewberry juice and wrote the most ridiculous response.

I'd ask how could anybody keep a straight face in light of such nonsense if I didn't know any better.

They've lost my custom.

They may as well change their name to 'The Male Body Shop' and bring out some new products such as snake oil and bull shit.

Catnuzzle · 15/06/2020 19:01

What's the email address for Body Shop? I couldn't find it on their website but sent feedback anyway, but I'd like to be able to illicit a response from them. Thanks. A woman. You know, the biological kind.

Veterinari · 15/06/2020 19:02

men have periods
Are these the same men that also require their own body shop skincare range because y'know biological men have thicker, oilier skin and facial shaving needs that biological women generally don't.

Don't they realise that their shaving/aftershave/men's toiletry range is also 'discriminating' against trans men?

Or as born females do they not count? Hmm

RoseByAnyOtherName · 15/06/2020 19:02

I got the same reply. BS from BS.

I am imagining the reaction I would get if I told my Dad, the men I work with, even my generally liberal male friends, that "People have periods – women, men and non-binary people" .

It would have been quicker if they had replied more honestly with a simple "get lost" instead of "We hope this helps you understand our position. We appreciated hearing yours."

I do not think they did hear my "position". They certainly weren't listening carefully or paying attention when I told them that they were amplifying a misogynist view that trammels over the experiences of women.

It's hard to see any value in further engagement with an organisation that thinks there are positions regarding the meaning of the word woman. It's as if they want to deny the existence, experience and history of female humans. When they say "We believe it is important to keep having conversations around difficult topics such as this" and "we believe the conversation needs to go forwards, not backwards" I hear "we will continue to ignore the hurt and offence we are causing our female customers when we insist we know better than women". Women are used to being belittled and ignored but usually not by retailers such as the Body Shop who rely on them as their core customer base.

Is he expecting it to happen to him? Of course he isn't, so of course he doesn't bloody (ha!) well believe it. What is wrong with some people?
