Thinking she ‘might’ be with us.

Check her reply to Dr Jess Taylor. Soz, not up to screenshooting at the mo).

It certainly should be irrelevant. Why have bylines if it is though?

I’m old enough to remember Prof.Greer’s famous ‘birds nest hair and fuck-me shoes’ comment about Suzanne Moore.

Destroyedpeople · 12/06/2020 16:39

If her appearance wasn't relevant why do the Times use a full body pic of her ...the same height as the column.....hmmm?
Male ' journalists' generally get a head shot...

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 12/06/2020 16:43

The Times' editorial decisions are neither here nor there.

If we're discussing her opinions I don't think there's any interesting information to be gleaned from her favouring hot pants over jumpsuits, or whatever it is we're supposed to be wearing

Why did they put women's breasts in The Sun? Because they were relevant to the story, or because sexism? Or are you actually trying to make the point that she needs a full body shot unlike a man's because of the relevance her looks plays?

HermionesMom · 12/06/2020 16:50

Memorability I'd assume. People have their favourite columnists and don't always remember names. But that still doesn't mean they should be judged in any way on their looks. Otherwise, we're only going to have pretty columnists like we do pop stars and hopefully, we can all agree that music in 2020 is a sad sad sad thing.

Frankiefree · 12/06/2020 16:50

I can’t believe that posters are criticising CM’s appearance! The MailOnline only seem to have photos of women in bikinis or in coloured shift dresses with heels. I love that CM is a respected journalist but dresses exactly as she pleases. That’s the feminist message I get from her clothes/hair anyway.

Not everyone can be everything. And CM introduced me to feminism 10 years ago with her book. I think CM has chosen to publicise her own version of feminism, which isn’t radical, but isn’t liberal either. She has her own reason for that, but if she was ‘cancelled’ then she wouldn’t possibly get the opportunity do what she is doing.

Destroyedpeople · 12/06/2020 16:50

Oh I don't know. But pretendin that you never judge on appearance or that appearance isn't important us just....silly. beyond silly in fact ..perhaps even inane...

Nuffaluff · 12/06/2020 17:00

I think we do judge others on their appearance. It’s human nature.
However, as feminists, I think we should make a conscious effort not to judge other women on their appearance. Making derogatory remarks about the way other women look isn’t feminist.
Having said that, I do judge Caitlin Moran for her the way she looks. I like her style, she looks great!

Destroyedpeople · 12/06/2020 17:02

Good grief it's not like insulting her body size or shape or looks....that would indeed be sexist bullshit.

nauticant · 12/06/2020 17:04

If Caitlin Moran is GC she has every right to keep this quiet. I wouldn't wish the JKR treatment on my worst enemy. It could end CM's career.

So long as CM doesn't undermine GC arguments or people making them then she's welcome to stay in the closet for as long as she wants.

DidoLamenting · 12/06/2020 17:07

I can't take her seriously- not because of what she wears but because of the silly expressions on her face in most of the by line photos.

HermionesMom · 12/06/2020 17:10

I never said that. You're just making shit up now. I said I don't judge a woman on her job because of the way she looks and that it's not feminist to do so, and that men aren't held up to same standards as women.

I've seen men wearing shirts with abusive or misogynistic shirts and yes, I do judge them. I don't make any value judgements on what a person writes because of their jeans though. No. And it's not "inane" to say that. I literally do not care. You're the one digging your heels in on why it really is relevant and not explaining how.

It is almost exclusively women we deride for dressing "too young". I see men dressing in jeans and tshirts and no one gives a tiny shit. IN fact it seems to be the uniform of CEOs at the moment. They're dressing like teenagers are they not?

But women should know they should crawl into their cave with their woollen cloak and hide away the second they turn 40.

sleepyhead · 12/06/2020 17:11

I (for reasons of wishful thinking and keeping a spark of hope alive as much as anything) choose to believe that any woman I like who hasn't made a statement to the contrary is GC.

Fanthorpe · 12/06/2020 17:14

Further to my comments earlier about the face-pulling she actually discusses it in Moranthology. It’s a deliberate act to avoid being scrutinised, she says it’s better to have a funny expression than be critiqued for other reasons.

Destroyedpeople · 12/06/2020 17:15

Not at all. But tights and shorts and docs is a kiddy look and you know it. I am way past 40 btw. It's the kind of thing my dd wore when she was 17.

Lordfrontpaw · 12/06/2020 17:16

That was me when I was 17!

bishopgiggles · 12/06/2020 17:17

Yes me too, although I should know better!

DidoLamenting · 12/06/2020 17:25

Not buying that for a minute. She just looks silly. Other female journalists don't behave like that.

It's just part of her "ooh, I'm so wacky" persona. It's the facial equivalent of keeping one of those sad little postcards saying " you don't have to be mad to work here, but it helps" and thinking it gives you a personality.

HermionesMom · 12/06/2020 17:28

I think exactly the same thing and have been proven correct on several occasions.

It's the thing to talk about if you're left wing, right wing or political at all. For or against.

If you studiously avoid the subject, there is a reason for it.

Violetparis · 12/06/2020 17:38

I really liked her years ago, feel let down by her now. She'll happily tweet about other worthwhile issues but avoids this one. She's made a huge career out of her writing on women/feminism and hardly utters a word on one of the biggest debates going on in feminism at the moment. She's shallow and superficial.

DidoLamenting · 12/06/2020 17:45

She was always shallow and superficial.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 12/06/2020 18:04

Like others, I am not going to condemn women in the public eye for not commenting on this. I have watched with increasing horror the vile abuse of women in recent years for daring to challenge the removal of women's rights. The tsunami of hate aimed at JKR for her measured and thoughtful comments has been terrible.
But we have to allow people to shift their position. Many of us acknowledge that we have changed our views over years and somehow all these (often younger) people who express TWAW views, must be supported to explore the issues behind the mantra. Not to mention all the girls who have been groomed into believing their worries about puberty can be resolved by drugs and surgery.
And Caitlin Moran's columns in the Times often give me reason to laugh - which is a bit of a rarity at the moment.

BaronessRadcliffeFemish · 12/06/2020 19:18

I'd forgotten all about CM. Is it me or has she been very quiet for a bit? Anyway, placemarking to follow this with interest and hope.

PhoenixBuchanan · 12/06/2020 19:33

Absolutely agree with this. Despite past statements I have suspected for awhile that CM is GC simply due to the fact that she hasn't said anything anti-GC or anything especially pro-trans in a long time. If a female writer/public figure/feminist is not out there shouting TWAW from the rooftops, I usually assume they're GC but scared shitless.

All intelligent women are gc and i think Caitlin is intelligent but also a bit woke ish so trying to balance the two positions. I think she could be gc openly as she writes for the times and so would absolutely not lose her job or her friends but maybe can't face the twitter backlash
