Brilliant article from the Times - regardless of where you stand on the Trans issue, this is a free speech issue. You do not have the right not to be offended, period. Freedom of speech is not there to protect the right to say "cats are cute" - it is there to protect people who say things that you may not wish to hear.
As another poster put it (sorry forget who) there are two further important considerations outside of the trans debate:
- Man explains to woman that she is doing feminism wrong.
- Man seeks to apologise on behalf of the errant woman.
Those things are really not OK. Imagine if a white actor decided to publicly chide the leaders of BLM, apologise for them and tell them that they are doing anti-racism wrong?
His statement was one of the most arrogant, patronising things I have ever seen. Again, regardless of the trans issue it is not anyone's place to speak for or apologise for another adult who clearly knows there own mind.
I don't buy the argument that he should keep quiet because of the fact that he starred in the films of the books she wrote - not at all, he is perfectly entitled to his own view. Many women like what he said because they believe TWAW but really - do they actually want men to speak for us and over us about women's issues? Really?
