Rainbows

Is anyone else happy about the changed meaning of displaying a rainbow at the moment?

For the first time in ages, my heart lights up, rather than sinks down when I see a rainbow in a window. They are mostly hand drawn by children and are a lovely message of solidarity and hope.

I wonder if Stonewall, Pride etc are a bit miffed about 'their' symbol being taken away (however temporarily)?

I agree- was very uplifted to see the lovely drawings.

Co-opted from Matt Hancock’s rainbow NHS pin he wears? When did that change from white/blue to rainbow.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 28/03/2020 08:16

Just as we had to take back the union jack flag from the National Front who appropriated it in the 70s / 80s, so society must take back the rainbow from misogynistic groups who have appropriated it. I'm very pleased to see so many rainbows in windows that have been drawn by children as a symbol of hope and optimism. Long may it continue.

OhHolyJesus · 28/03/2020 08:16

I have too strong an association with rainbows and Stonewall. It makes me sad but I don't feel uplifted, I feel suspicious.

pictish · 28/03/2020 08:31

Rainbows are far bigger than any societal affiliation.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 28/03/2020 09:05

I thought this was going to about the smallest Girl Guides. Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 28/03/2020 09:20

A rainbow drawn by, and for, kids is a cheerful thing, despite its association with a deity who allegedly committed genocide and killed most animals into the bargain but then promised not to do it again. Compared to that mindfuck, the T appropriation of the gay pride symbol is a transitory annoyance.

And you can do physics lessons for a variety of ages based on the rainbow.

nomdefuckit · 28/03/2020 09:24

It's meaning never changed for me

This is one debate we really don't need to be having right now

HorseRadishFemish · 28/03/2020 09:28

Just searched for deity + rainbow but drawn a blank. Am interested to know more..

Who is this arsehole?

grafittiartist · 28/03/2020 09:30

I thought this very thing yesterday.
I'm happy to see it used as just a lovely thing- no message!

HorseRadishFemish · 28/03/2020 09:31

It's meaning never changed for me ..

Go on - you've piqued my interest - what is it's "meaning" (to you)?

Pentium85 · 28/03/2020 09:33

Very naive of me, but can I ask why your heart used to sink at seeing a rainbow?

I see a rainbow as just that, a rainbow. Something I see when it is both raining and sunny.

ScorpionQueen · 28/03/2020 09:34

Horseradish
Noah's Ark
But I'm not sure it's a true story...

EmpressLangClegInChair · 28/03/2020 09:35

Well, if rainbows are going back from homophobic misogyny to a symbol of happiness that can only be a good thing.

Yes, but then again I'm not sure everything stonewall says is true either.

Physics OTOH (even though newton only got part way on the 'is it a wave? Is it a particle?question Grin)

Genesis 9 , part of the strangest source for cute kiddie stories and songs ever https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+5%3A32-10%3A1&version=NIV

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 09:51

killed most animals into the bargain

Never understood why he killed the animals

Thats why I started questioning Religion as a child

I know its just a story

(But i also became a (very bad) vegetarian at 9 after reading Animal Farm...so obviously actual points swooshed over my head as a child)

My son is gay and he and his partner do love a rainbow t shirt in what they feel is the appropriate place (pride Etc)

Ive my own reason for not liking them

CheriLittlebottom · 28/03/2020 09:53

Yes, I'm happy to see rainbows for the first time in a long time.

I'm taking the happiness while it lasts, as unfortunately I can't see it lasting.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 28/03/2020 09:54

empress

That sign is horrendous

No one tells my babies what genitals they should prefer

And even though they are 21 18 and 16 I’m really not comfortable thinking about genitals when i think of my precious angels 😳

AnyOldSpartabix · 28/03/2020 09:55

My mother said last year that she was sad rainbows had been appropriated. I agree with her. Something as beautiful and cheering as a rainbow does not belong to anybody and I felt the same when I saw photos on Facebook.

Too right, Rufus!

ScorpionQueen · 28/03/2020 09:59

Errol
There's more chance of Noah's Ark being true...

TooOldForSims · 28/03/2020 10:25

Is that a real sign? From Liverpool Uni? That's vile.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 28/03/2020 10:38

A Liverpool Uni student saw it & shared on social. And yes, it is vile.

Justhadathought · 28/03/2020 10:39

Rainbows tend to spontaneously erupt from the imagination of children - given crayons and paper........but yes, along with friggin' unicorns, rainbows have become appropriated by the loony identitarians...so much so that I tend to recoil upon seeing them.

In straightened and more 'essentialist' times, words, images and associations will inevitably revert back to their primal & original states. Words like 'Woman' & 'Natal Sex' and images of rainbows.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/03/2020 10:42

It was never their rainbow in the first place.
