assigned at birth - and form filling

HDDD · 06/03/2020 15:54

I've just had to fill in a form and it asked if my gender matched the one I was assigned at birth. On a practical note, has anyone successfully managed to get an organisation to re-think the wording on this? If so, how? I'm all for inclusive wording and collecting of relevant data but this assigned at birth nonsense grates. This was in the UK, and a local authority standard form.

Have you got a screenshot / picture / link?

Which local authority?

I don't believe anyone who uses language like 'assigned gender at birth' believes the rubbish they're spouting. I saw a Labour councillor today who uses language like this all the time, reply to someone with 'he's a beaut' when they posted an image of their new-born son.

Similarly flowjobqueen assumed the gender of the bouncer who threw him out of the women's toilets despite calling for violence against people who assume other people's gender.

Have not experienced this op. I would probably ask questions. What on earth is gender assigned at birth actually supposed to mean, what is identifying as a gender supposed to mean, and what is gender. Honestly if I didn't know about this stuff, if I was given a form like that I'd be pretty baffled by it. I think a lot of people would.

popehilarious · 06/03/2020 16:05

In my experience it's lgbtq ppl in the org who request these changes to forms. They're trying to be inclusive but forget about people who may not have a gender.

HarrietThePi · 06/03/2020 16:07

Is your gender : male or female. Fine I can answer that and it's clear from the context that gender is being used in place of the word sex, but throw identifying and assigned into the mix and it's really not so straightforward. We know what they mean (as much as it's possible to understand something that doesn't make any sense) but I just don't believe that the majority of the population would.

HDDD · 06/03/2020 16:09

Exact wording below
Male Female
Is your gender identity the same as the gender you were assigned at birth?
Yes No
There's a link in the footer to yourcounciljobs.co.uk/ (now redirecting) which suggests it's maybe a standard form they've downloaded and stuck their own logo on.

The NHS did this when I when to get my depo injection. Really stupid form. I was a bit ranty to a friend on whatsapp about it (it was a drop in clinic and a long wait) so I've just looked up the messages.

[I'm assuming the question was Gender]: Male (including transman)/female (including transwoman)/non binary/intersex/prefer not to say

'Is this the sex you were assigned at birth?'

'Who do you sleep with? Men (inc transmen)... etc etc'

As I assume biological males can't have the depo injection I was a little bit Hmm

HarrietThePi · 06/03/2020 16:13

A big bugbear of mine is that according to the gender people, being trans means your gender does not match with the sex that you were (randomly) assigned at birth. At the same time, sex does not equal gender and furthermore a trans person has always had the gender identity that they identify as having because that's their true, inner self. So a trans identifying person could say that their gender identity matches the gender they were assigned at birth. It's a pointless question.

Found it, thanks. Absolute gibberish

assigned at birth - and form filling
BringbackLang · 06/03/2020 16:20

I think I know which council this is.

HarrietThePi · 06/03/2020 16:21

Let's make our form more inclusive by ensuring that only people with an up to date knowledge of the latest gender theory and a good grasp of the English language can fill it in.

HDDD · 06/03/2020 16:28

@jadefinch It wasn't exactly the same as that, it didn't have the explanations your screenshot did. BUT, probably culled from the same template

@bringbackleng it wouldn't surprise me if many councils use the same resources/standard template - then again maybe it's just mine and you live/work in same area

I am pleased to see it at least has sex on there with gender separate. But surely that gender question should have been placed under ‘Religion or belief’?

ThinEndoftheWedge · 06/03/2020 16:36

Aside from the obvious that OP/PP’s have already alluded to - how exactly are they going accurately define record sexual orientation:

Sex- (born) - male
Gender Identity - female
Sexual orientation -gay woman / lesbian.

No accurate monitoring for equalities then...

Languishingfemale · 06/03/2020 16:38

Just looked at a pet insurance form asking for the the gender of a cat Confused

definitelygc · 06/03/2020 16:39

Why not just say "Do you identify as transgender or transsexual?". Asking questions like "Does your gender identity match the gender you were assigned at birth?" is actually exclusionary. My older relatives would have no idea what this question means. Plenty of people with English as a second language or limited literacy levels would also struggle with this. I went to a local meeting and we were all asked to introduce ourselves with our pronouns. Half the room had no idea what they were talking about (particularly the older members of the group) and it was incredibly awkward and embarrassing for everyone involved.

BringbackLang · 06/03/2020 16:40

@Languishingfemale I think my cat identifies as fabulous otherwise his sex is a boy.

@HDDD does it begin with a E?

BringbackLang · 06/03/2020 16:42

I filled out a job application recently for a council and they asked if I 'identified as the gender assigned to me at birth.' I ticked prefer not to say- not playing those games. I'd love to challenge it though.

HDDD · 06/03/2020 16:44

@bringbackleng No!

And yup, aside from the obvious regarding 'assigned at birth' it really is unfathomable to some older people and some people where English is a second language

OP posts:
BringbackLang · 06/03/2020 16:46

Ah so it's not just my council then.

HappentoHappen · 06/03/2020 16:50

My mother assures me that I was observed female at birth. There was nothing arbitrary or discretionary about it. So she says.

Miriel · 06/03/2020 17:25

I had that exact question on a form recently and couldn't answer it. I don't have a gender identity and don't believe in the associated ideology. Therefore, as I said on another thread, it's like asking a lifelong atheist 'is the church you currently attend the same as the one you were baptised in?' Neither 'yes' nor 'no' is a correct answer.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/03/2020 18:18

I find that putting MYOB as a reply to impertinent questions never gets any comeback.

MrsJoshNavidi · 06/03/2020 18:31

I've just completed an m&s survey which asked for the gender I most identified with 😡

HappentoHappen · 06/03/2020 19:43

@MrsJoshNavidi I would be really stuck on that one. I mean, male because I don’t wear makeup or heels and rarely wear skirts or dresses? That’s not at all what they mean though Confused

maslinpan · 06/03/2020 19:53

What about, "sorry, I don't understand the question?". I like the thought of ringing up HR, and getting them to explain the question to you, as if you genuinely do not get what they are on about.
