assigned at birth - and form filling

I've just had to fill in a form and it asked if my gender matched the one I was assigned at birth. On a practical note, has anyone successfully managed to get an organisation to re-think the wording on this? If so, how? I'm all for inclusive wording and collecting of relevant data but this assigned at birth nonsense grates. This was in the UK, and a local authority standard form.

God, imagine if they were just straightforward and asked how masculine or feminine you are and what genitals you have?

Hi HDDD

I challenged the Bar Council and Bar Standards Board to explain why they were asking barristers about non-protected characteristics instead of protected characteristics in a form (thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3827367-Calling-all-barristers)

I got a response saying they were going to review the questions that would appear on the form in future years.
They suggested an alternative to 'assigned at birth' could be 'registered at birth'. Asking whether your gender is the same as the sex you were registered at birth seemed like an ok compromise to me (as long as participants are asked for their sex in a separate question).

I find that putting MYOB as a reply to impertinent questions never gets any comeback.

That's my stock response too. Gets up my snout that so many organizations assume the right to any information they want about people, just because they ask for it (and that's a general complaint, although the gender identity/sexuality thing is a particular bugbear). They also look genuinely nonplussed when I ask them the perfectly reasonable question of 'why do you want to know?' Nosy blighters; what's it got to do with them?

Thanks @PygmyHippoBob I'll have a look at your thread.

DD had to go to paediatric A and E this week for a minor fracture. We got a survey asking about the experience, filled in some positive comments, and then noticed they asked us to tick girl/boy/non-binary. FFS! I wrote that the last category was nonsensical as they only treat male OR female patients. I am despairing at the relentless creeping progress of this kind of shit.
