Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The BBC is promoting a trans doctor who seemingly only affirms patients' dysphoria

BBC Three has created a film, made a Twitter thread and put together a website promoting 'Dr Ronx', a trans doctor who seems to affirm patients with severe problems' gender identity issues rather than offer independent and potentially helpful advice.

In the footage shown here a young patient says their chest binder is causing them severe spinal pain and breathing difficulties. Dr Ronx offers the advice to keep using chest binders but try different ones.

At no point is it even suggested that the patient could have counselling so they can stop hating their body, or that the spinal, rib and breathing problems are serious issues.

What is the BBC playing at?

The thread ends with a link to websites such as Mermaids for children to contact if they have issues:

Is it just me or 36D really isn’t that big?

Exactly my thoughts. I'm a 30F and pretty small.

DishwasherJan · 28/02/2020 18:08

Dd loves operation ouch, I was really pleased they’d introduced a black / female / gay character but she’s absolutely infuriating with the trans indoctrination.

Dreamprincess · 28/02/2020 18:13

For some strange reason, possibly because it is the end of a very hard week for me, the arrival of the pill was brought to mind by this video. I am old enough to remember that before then, we girls were able to use fear of pregnancy to (attempt to) ward off over-enthusiastic boyfriends. Suddenly that rug was pulled from out from under our feet and caution was only re-established with the arrival of HIV.

I wonder if this obsession with removing breasts, either literally or by binding is the same as breast ironing, citing fear of pregnancy, HIV etc. An attempt to avoid unwanted attention, rather than a true gender dysphoria: put more succinctly for a new generation 'plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose'.

Great spot on the "sex work is work" bag. It's all part of the same ideology whereby women's bodies are objects for male pleasure and the only way to escape it is to "transition" out of the woman box. It doesn't surprise me that young people are subscribing to this shit but shame on all these institutions for encouraging it.

TorkTorkBam · 28/02/2020 19:37

Round here the usual way for teenage girls to limit boobs being leered at on the way to school is to wear a big jumper or blazer, hold a folder tightly in front of you and hunch.

Not nice but doesn't involve surgery.

RiotAndAlarum · 28/02/2020 21:03

Ah, hell. Operation Ouch off DD's list, then.

Ffs, CBBC is meant to be safer than bastard Tumblr! Is nowhere safe? Sad

TorkTorkBam · 28/02/2020 21:14

Minecraft. That's safety. Every cuboid person is gender non-conforming in Minecraft.

TorkTorkBam · 28/02/2020 21:14

Oh god. Have I jinxed Minecraft Grin?

Breast binding -article by Dr Em www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3543691-Breast-binding-article-by-Dr-Em

Just found this when looking for a different article

EverardDigby · 29/02/2020 06:53

Was the sex work is work bag on CBBC? Confused

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 06:58

And yes, I'm a 36 D, probably larger as I'm breastfeeding, definitely one side is. It's really not that big as 36 is a narrow rib cage. My breasts disappear with a particular sports bra I wear; a smooth shock absorber I think. But I've stopped wearing it as I couldn't breath to do the sport.

Indeed, a wonderful lactation consultant I know was talking about how bras aren't great full stop. And I think a new strap free bar thing has been launched on the back or research around that.

I don't know if there's issues with blood flow etc with binding? Potentially longer term issues? Cysts or worse?

In my age group, sadly, there's too many mastectomies happening due to cancer. And women I read of in breastfeeding groups worrying about having to stop early for mammograms etc.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 06:59

This is another fucked up article around the subject:

megletthesecond · 29/02/2020 07:01

Ev no, I think the clip is a link to the bbc3 programme with Dr Ronx.

EverardDigby · 29/02/2020 07:17

Ah, still that's not that much better, thanks Meg, it's not a message I want my teenage DD to see reinforced by the BBC.

phivephatphish · 29/02/2020 07:31

And the BBC believes this person is worth promoting as someone to give advice to children about their bodies.

Of course she is worth promoting......she ticks all their diversity boxes in one big tick.

I know her.

She is a relatively junior doctor. She had no breasts pre surgery (well not that you could see....maybe bound), and used to identify as female gay. I haven’t seen her in a while. She is very in your face IRL- they type of person you simply can’t have a reasoned discussion with because they are right and you are wrong and they will argue you down regardless of how wrong they are. I rolled my eyes when I saw her on operation ouch.....this is something else entirely. She may find herself on dodgy ground with the GMC if she isn’t careful.

DiscontentedWoman · 29/02/2020 07:45

That clip is just so upsetting. Poor bloody kid. How is this not self harm ffs

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 07:51

She may find herself on dodgy ground with the GMC if she isn’t careful.

Yes.

It said in a pink news or other article she used to bind. In this it looks like she does.

Why does non binary default to male aesthetic?

I wonder if more education around the purpose of breasts would help to ease the pressure young girls feel?

SisterWendyBuckett · 29/02/2020 08:26

Why does non binary default to male aesthetic?
This.

I couldn't watch more than a couple of minutes, it just broke me as this is so close to home.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 08:27

Thanks Wendy

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 08:28

I think there should be reports to the GMC about this.

hoodathunkit · 29/02/2020 08:38

The BBC have being steadly going off the rails over the years.

Last week on Women's Hour they had a completely uncritical feature on astrology and how it could help women.

Re Dr Ronx, her real name is Ronke Ikharia

www.hackneygazette.co.uk/news/not-all-doctors-are-white-men-homerton-s-dr-ronx-speaks-out-about-her-turbulent-journey-1-5029505

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/02/2020 08:40

And yet now she's internalised the patriarchal structures and misogyny she attempted to challenge by removing her healthy breasts.
