People who menstruate

NC as this concerns my place of work - (a school)

Brook will be delivering a talk to staff. The synopsis of content is 'people who menstruate - supporting them in period poverty'. Throughout the whole summary of the talk this term is used. This is Brook's wording.

I'm really surprised at an organisation such as Brook using this term - Why not use the term young women/ girls in period poverty?

Is this just semantics? I can't help feeling that the term 'people who produce sperm' would just never be used

OP posts:

Hi OP, can you link to Brook? Just for context, I'd be interested to know how diverse their workforce is.

SapphosRock · 28/02/2020 10:39

Don't see the issue.

There are two options Brook could take:

  1. Pretending that trans boys / men don't exist and ignoring the fact that these people menstruate.
  1. Using the term 'people who menstruate' when specifically discussing menstruation.

I am sure if there was a talk specifically about producing semen then 'people who produce semen' would be used. There is unlikely to be such a talk though.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 28/02/2020 10:43

Aye, our council just released an announcement about sanitary provision that manages to have expunged the words 'woman' and 'girls' entirely. It states primly that it's gender neutral.

Floisme · 28/02/2020 10:44

I wonder why trans men and boys menstruate?

peachescariad · 28/02/2020 10:47

Trans men/boys are biologically female.

ApplePenPineapplePen · 28/02/2020 10:49

Making them.... women.

SarahTancredi · 28/02/2020 10:52

Nope , men get to keep their words.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/02/2020 10:54

Is this 'inclusive' language readily comprehensible by people who are not fluent in English or who have some types of learning difficulty?

If you want to be comprehensible and inclusive then use 'women/girls and

Kit19 · 28/02/2020 10:54

People who menustrate are by definition women & girls!

It doesn’t matter how someone identifies they are still biologically a woman/girl

Thinkingabout1t · 28/02/2020 10:59

This is all part of the trans lobby’s attempt to pretend women don’t exist as a separate sex.

The idea is that men can call themselves women if they ‘feel’ they are women. So ‘woman’ becomes a ‘gender identity’ instead of a simple biological fact. Importantly, this gives men access to all women-only facilites.

Obviously a meaningless concept, but the trans lobby is powerful and well-funded. People who speak up for women can lose their jobs and be harassed by the police. Sad to see an organisation like Brook bowing to lobbyists.

Thelnebriati · 28/02/2020 11:00

Is it supposed to be another example of a small, kind adjustment that will only affect a tiny minority? Confused

There's no way you'll ever get me to accept coercing girls into erasing themselves. Its the exact and precise opposite of both 'feminism' and 'kindness'.

Floisme · 28/02/2020 11:03

Yup, I absolutely understand why the TWAW lobby are picking this battle: Control language and you're halfway to controlling thoughts.
It's alarming to see institutions caving in.

Collidascope · 28/02/2020 11:05

I went into my Fitbit app today to log my period. I was actually relieved to see it's still titled as "female health."

Thinkingabout1t · 28/02/2020 11:05

Girls/women who identify as boys/men know whether or not they menstruate. Men and boys know they themselves do not menstruate.

Kit19 · 28/02/2020 11:07

Ok their website refers to girls

www.brook.org.uk/your-life/periods/

So I’d challenge them on the ppl who menustrate thing on

Thinkingabout1t · 28/02/2020 11:08

Control language and you control thought.
Control thought and you control actions.

Kanga83 · 28/02/2020 11:11

Females menstruate. I refuse to bow down to erasing the female form, her biological functions and identity for the sake of PC language which is nothing more than control of the masses.

Winesalot · 28/02/2020 11:21

The tone of ‘people who .....’ feels very othering and impersonal. They could just say ‘we are discussing periods or menstration for those interested or wanting advice’ perhaps without saying anything about the ‘people who’ are doing it. It is almost like signaling that they are inclusive.

Should anyone going to a bowel awareness discussion be called ‘people who defecate’ or who have erectile dysfunction be called ‘people who can’t ejaculate’? Where does it stop and who has decided that it works. I’d love to see the focus group studies that says this is widely acceptable and that it conveys the message properly.

This communication style is dehumanising and I feel it is actually right to call it out before it becomes even more ingrained.

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 28/02/2020 11:27

Transmen and non binary ‘menstruators’ may not want to be called ‘women’ but they are still female. Orgs like Brook need to sort their language out, children and teenagers need accurate medical terms for body parts and functions and they need to be able to tell adult men from adult women. That’s surely safeguarding against sexual abuse 101?
Being able to talk about one’s body accurately is a positive influencer on lifelong health, both reproductive and general.

I’d be tempted to naively question them with woke non-science and ask how to help bleeders feel more in tune with their front holes?

Babdoc · 28/02/2020 11:29

As per the old Alice Cooper song : “Only women bleed”.
Maybe we should adopt that as a slogan?!

SapphosRock · 28/02/2020 11:34

Transmen and non binary ‘menstruators’ may not want to be called ‘women’ but they are still female.

Surely this is the point? Why insist on calling people women who do not want to be called women?

Like it or not people with female anatomy have all sorts of gender identities, I don't see the problem in acknowledging this. It doesn't take away womanhood from women.

SarahTancredi · 28/02/2020 11:38

Woman is a sex not a gender.

And when did lying about reality ever do anything but cause harm.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/02/2020 11:38

Why insist on calling people women who do not want to be called women?

Why insist on calling women and girls 'people who menstruate' if they don't want to be thus described, or if they may not even understand the term?

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 28/02/2020 11:38

So call them female students. Not ‘people who menstruate’

DuLANGMondeFOREVER · 28/02/2020 11:39

Or ‘uterus havers’

Shudder.

This is a UK school, not Gilead.
