The leadership candidates are about to speak at this event. Just watched the deputies and they all said the same thing from the same script.

Pink news are streaming and currently there's me and 56 others watching live online!

Thanks moofolk.

This clearly wasn't a hustings in any conventional sense of the word - as a PP said, more like a chat show. Benjamin Cohen reading the questions out Hmm and any interaction from the audience barred. "No awkwad questions, now people!!

Moofolk - I'm watching some of it this morning - and when you asked about the conversion therapy and children - and that man shouted "Fuck off you terf" - I sensed some real discomfort on Starmer and Nandy's faces.

I believe they are perfectly aware that the treatment of children IS very problematic (they must have at least heard about the Tavistock whistleblowers!) and I do think it makes them uncomfortable. I'm partic shocked at Starmer - a Labour veteran, and I thought previous "solid Labour bloke" just being swept along with this ideology.

There is something deeply rotten in the Labour party - "Blair" (the only labour leader to have won an election in my living memory) is now a dirty word. Why? Not left enough? - well, he won 3 elections. Iraq? I was against Iraq too - but these v young Labourites must have v little meaningful memory of it, surely? I was bf'ing my DS1 when it started, and he's 18 now. But it's become something to vilify Blair - and I suppose as is the culture now, assume every single other thing he ever did was "bad" ?

theflushedzebra · 21/02/2020 07:47

So I think this was less "Labour Leadership Hustings" and more an extension "Pink Awards Ceremony" - with everyone all agreeing and trying to out-do themselves on just how incredibly Pink they are.

FiLiA is asking for a women's hustings - what do you think the chances are.... twitter.com/FiLiA_charity/status/1230766242870415361?s=20

Labour, you keep cementing that the government is for Conservatives, not for you.

EverardDigby · 21/02/2020 09:26

Talking about Ash Sarkar this seemed highly ironic

I wish one of them had said "I've never been to Pride, I'm heterosexual."

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/02/2020 09:40

Nandy or RLB (not sure which one) muttered under their breath, debate always being shut down.

Did one of them say this or is this your comment?

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/02/2020 09:41

@WrathofFaeKlopp

theflushedzebra · 21/02/2020 09:58

Nandy said it, Neurotrash.

Just as Helen Steel was being dragged from the audience by a male security person.

TabbyStar · 21/02/2020 10:11

I heard it too, I assumed Nandy meant debate was being shut down by women, but did she actually mean women were being shut down?

TinselAngel · 21/02/2020 10:40

Keir Starmer knows Helen Steel through McLibel, I think?

Datun · 21/02/2020 10:44

He does know her, they worked on the Mclibel case together. What on earth must he be thinking?

LauraMipsum · 21/02/2020 10:44

I think Nandy meant it sarcastically, as in "they complain debate is being shut down but they're positively disruptive so this is neither debate nor being shut down"

TinselAngel · 21/02/2020 10:55

He does know her, they worked on the Mclibel case together. What on earth must he be thinking?

You'd hope he'd be thinking "Bloody hell if my old friend Helen is supposedly the baddie, maybe I should think again?"

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 21/02/2020 11:04

Well done Moo. You're a brave woman. Flowers

andyoldlabour · 21/02/2020 11:09

"Tony Blair is an unexpected ally of women"

I think he is an opportunist and a war criminal. Not called "Teflon Tony" for no reason.

10FrozenFingers · 21/02/2020 11:10

Well done, Moo!

AnotherNightWatering · 21/02/2020 11:16

He's thinking, how can I get elected leader when so many of the Labour Party electorate for the leadership believe all this. Answer, say as little as possible.

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/02/2020 12:39

Wow thanks for clarifying.

That footage! It's a hustings ffs!

Well done Moo and all the others!

NeurotrashWarrior · 21/02/2020 12:41

Helen steel Shock

Just as Helen Steel was being dragged from the audience by a male security person.

Question time will be interesting!

I applaud the women speaking up👏👏👏

However I'm not going waste energy being disappointed by the rest of the event because I expected nothing different. Most LGBT+ events/ orgs are echo chambers and most politicians attend these events just to pay lip service to these echo chambers. Let them destroy themselves from the inside out, its time for women and grounded LGBT's to build something better.

armchairactivists · 21/02/2020 13:54

Kier Starmer has been using Helen's name in his campaign. He gave her some legal advice for McLibel and he's obviously proud of this (or his team think it helps his credibility anyway).

Is he capable of listening to Helen's questions on women's rights?
