Article in the Times including a snort making comment about Layla Moran's soul gazing abilities.

My first attempt at a share token so I hope it works.

They've outsourced their brains and moral compasses to 'brilliant' newly graduated policy advisers who think that being young confers unique wisdom when they will, eventually, find out the reverse is the case.

Political campaigning used to be a form of evangelism. It has become advertising.

I think a lot of it is to do with politicians thinking that using twitter means they are directly talking to the electorate when actually it means they are engaging with a self selecting bunch of aggressive gob shites.

Floisme · 15/02/2020 10:43

alias thanks for the Suzanne Moore / Julie Burchill articles. I can't believe how I managed to miss all that!

PermanentTemporary · 15/02/2020 10:46

YES lynnschmob that exactly.

Not really sure why any politician is on twitter tbh. Read it sometimes, maybe, but actually have an account and use it? Insane.

Wow I had never seen Suzanne Moore speak up before this week. Yes she does normally write for The Guardian so who know what's going on there.

Suzanne Moore got into trouble in 2013 for writing that “[Women] are angry with ourselves for not being happier, not being loved properly and not having the ideal body shape – that of a Brazilian transsexual.”

I am using the exact quote so people who don’t remember it can see why it caused such a huge furore, mainly because people felt that it was tasteless because the murder rate of transgender people is high in Brazil. I think by 2013 most people were using the term transgender too.

I think this is why she has been quiet on the topic. However I have seen a few more comments recently. She was a very good friend of Deborah Orr who also changed her views.

Aaargh - how did I miss Aliasundercover’s posts. I wasted so much time trying to write it too, worrying about the language.

Aesopfable · 15/02/2020 11:19

the murder rate of transgender people is high in Brazil

But still only a fraction of the rate for other men, and lower than women too.

Floisme · 15/02/2020 11:19

Thank you too nettie, I appreciate your going to all that trouble, especially with the language. I've been trying to remember what I was doing in 2013 to miss all the kerfuffle!

Aesopfable · 15/02/2020 11:20

(Any murder is terrible)

nettie434 · 16/02/2020 09:09

I appreciate your going to all that trouble

That's very kind Floisme. I only needed to be absolutely clear it was a quote Blush to avoid linking to Pink News which lots of posters prefer to avoid.

In retrospect, the article was probably more important than it seemed at the time. There is huge pressure on women to conform to physical ideals - particularly the curvy yet size zero look - and to remain looking as if they have not experienced childbirth.

Yes Aesopfable. Any murder is dreadful. And of course Brazil is a very populous country with a high murder rate overall so that needs to be placed in context.
