I thought I read (somewhere, ages ago) that it’s not possible, beyond a point, to breastfeed, due to the size of the adult teeth and jaw.
As far as I can remember, the main difference is that a baby, but not an adult, has the right anatomy to create a sufficiently strong intra-oral vacuum to suction milk out of the breast.
The ability of the lips to to form a good seal and the coordinated motion of the tongue, creating the vacuum then moving to swallow is a reflex motor pattern.

This ability and pattern is lost with age, due to anatomical changes. So an older child or adult would have to actively suck and drag on the nipple and "knead" the breast to squeeze milk out, like milking an animal by hand 
I haven't read the article yet - it sounds horrific! Those poor women - and the babies denied proper nutrition.
