Kathleen Stock cancelled by UEA

In another example of the ongoing existential threat to freedom of speech, Kathleen Stock's speech at the University of East Anglia has been 'postponed'

^I think this is part of a wider pattern where an invitation to speak is given in the normal way, and then senior management panic in response apparently to some kind of protest,” she said.
“They know that can’t say they are cancelling the talk, so they say we are ‘postponing’ it in the interests of something nebulous like health and safety" The university said the talk could go ahead if a “transgender speaker” is also invited the following week. They said a bigger venue was needed as well as additional security^

Disgusting cowardice by a bunch of scared wombats

Michelleoftheresistance · 17/01/2020 19:47

If a transgender speaker is giving a speech, can they only do it if a GC speaker is invited too?

What happens when - a la radio 4 - the transgender speaker refuses to share a platform and event?

Is the additional security required (or ever has been required) due to the behaviour of any GC women present?

Aesopfable · 17/01/2020 19:55

Do they do the same for other protected characteristics? So if Kathleen speaks, they will need to invite a male speaker, a gay speaker, a pregnant speaker, someone of another race, a disabled speaker, married/unmarried speaker (don’t know her marital status), a older speaker, a devout believer, as well as a transgender one? Or do they have to find one speaker who encompasses all these (they will be high demand for ‘diversity points’)?

As a tactic, this has been used successfully to no platform speakers. The no platform/no debate squad threaten to wreak havoc and the University capitulates because policing the event is too expensive. It is incredible that violent intimidation or the threat of it has become a way to control who speaks and silence critical voices

It started with #nodebate and speedily escalated into harassment, acts of violence and intimidation of women (and some men). In plain sight of our forces of law and order and enabled by so many useful idiots in power.

Uncompromising I absolutely agree about the useful idiots. Many politicos have leaped aboard. Much of the state apparatus has been colonised, the civil service, the police. Did you see the Harry Miller interview on Trigger? It's just incredible. I blame the Conservatives for much of this. They are supposed to have freedom as a foundational, definitional principle. They have allowed this no debate BS to stifle any dissent

@Joisanofthedales Why the shade at wombats? Wombats are wonderful!

AnyOldPrion · 17/01/2020 20:37

Miranda Yardley. Job’s a good’un!

But as usual, the rest of this news caused me the usual eye roll and yet another headful of “when will it end?” and “how come there are people who still don’t see?” thoughts....

Michelleoftheresistance · 17/01/2020 20:39

Seconding Miranda. Or Debbie. Charlie would also be great.

ThePurported · 17/01/2020 20:48

There was a conference at some other university few months ago, where one of the TRA speakers claimed that extra security was needed because GC women might turn up to take "unflattering" pictures of the speakers.
They had a traffic light system to show which participants were happy to be approached for discussion, and Kathleen Stock was cited as an example of hate speech. Hmm
Not sure if any GC speakers were invited for balance - I doubt it.

Bobalicious1 · 19/01/2020 15:27

Well done to UEA for nipping such hatred in the bud.

Intolerance towards intolerant people... Keep it up UEA.

Hopefully other universities follow suit

GeordieTerf · 19/01/2020 15:31

Hi Bob

Can you please provide a list of all opinions/ viewpoints that universities should be banned from discussing?

Please also let me know which credentials you have that give you the right to tell other people what constitutes “hate”.

Ta Smile

Aesopfable · 19/01/2020 15:35

Well done UAE for nipping freedom of thought and speech in the bud.

Intolerance towards people who believe in freedom of speech.. keep it up UAE.

Hopefully other universities will follow suite to such facism.

ChateauMyself · 19/01/2020 15:36

So, could ‘you’ complain if say one of the science departments had a lecture on reproduction / evolution / Big Bang, cosmology etc... (you get the idea) & didn’t offer to host an alternative theologian speaker.

What’s the difference?

Mockers2020Vision · 19/01/2020 19:15

Quite Right, Bobalicious1

Tolerance is a fundamental virtue in a free society. Let's not waste it on uppity women with opinions.

RuffleCrow · 19/01/2020 19:21

On the upside, I live near the UEA and every time someone puts up a bunch of TWAW /anti-feminist stickers on traffic lights etc, some other shero (probably) comes along to tear them off and deface them.

Tubbytwo · 19/01/2020 20:15

I think we can all agree that university campuses should be a place where one idiotic, indefensible ideology is upheld and no dissenting voices are allowed to be heard, yes? After all no-one goes to university to learn to think think critically and to form coherent arguments surely? In fact I'm currently applying to become a student at a new university that's just about to open. It's called ECU (Echo Chamber University). I am assured that I will feel very, very safe there :)

Mockers2020Vision · 19/01/2020 20:17

Where's Howard Kirk at UEA when you need him?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 19/01/2020 20:22

Bob won’t be able to give a coherent answer, because bob is probably only capable of repeating woke mantras, rather than critical thinking. Poor bob, so sad Sad

Aesopfable · 19/01/2020 21:54

Tubby I have heard of ECU. I believe that instead of a library they have a soundproof room with mirrors to reflect your thoughts straight back at you without letting any other noises intrude. No exams as that would be exclusionary.

Are you confident of getting in though? I believe there inclusive policy means no cervix-havers or menstruators allowed as their presence would be literal violence,

Bobalicious1 · 19/01/2020 23:34

Wouldn't call myself "woke"

Will happily go head on with the UEA, if I think they're wrong.

Will go head on with anybody if I think they're wrong, or, intolerant towards others.

Hatred breeds more hatred... I've seen too many people hurt through intolerance.

But, please, feel free to think whatever you like about me, as I know the truth, and, so does the people in my life that matters to me :-)

Tubbytwo · 19/01/2020 23:36

—aesopfable—I could have a hysterectomy if that would boost my chance of getting in? 😯

GirlDownUnder · 19/01/2020 23:52

Wait, what TWAW /anti-feminist stickers on traffic lights etc, why is this wanton vandalism not all over the news? Where are all the wokesters protesting at the poor workers who have to clean the mess up?
And where are the warnings I, or the cleaners, might die from blood loss after losing limbs because of the hidden swords if we try and remove said stickers?

GirlDownUnder · 19/01/2020 23:54

Hey Bob nice brand of tolerance you have there 🥱
