Appeared in my local newspaper today: www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/outage-after-trans-woman-sent-17571703

A support group for transgender people has hit out at a judge who sentenced a trans woman to a male only prison

"Trans people who are convicted of crimes should be treated in the same way as anyone else who is convicted of similar crimes.

Absolutely right. They should go to the prison appropriate to their sex, same as anyone else. And, same as anyone else (in this case cf gay men) if they're at risk of violence from other prisoners then that needs to be addressed in the correct estate.

Don’t blame the journalists FFS. If you’re reporting from court then in order not to be in contempt your report has to be an accurate report of the proceedings. You can’t just use the pronouns you fancy if the defendant is female on the court list, referred to as female in court and has a female name. However much you want to take an editorial stance, the only thing you can do is report it straight, as we say, and let people pick it apart on social media.

The journalist made a specific trip to court to ensure this case was covered.

Strange that there is a distinct lack of the normal transphobes/bigots screams you normally see on that twitter.
I wonder why.

Mockers2020Vision · 15/01/2020 18:56

Do not forget

The people who demand male-bodies prisoners must be housed in female prisons are the moderates.

The batshit wing of the movement says no (self ID-ing) transperson should ever be sent to prison.

They occupied the Justice Ministry's foyer a while back to demand this. (Although they had a bit of trouble finding it.)

TildaKauskumholm · 15/01/2020 18:58

But this man would clearly not be in danger in the appropriate male prison, as he would no doubt miraculously become a man again.

Ereshkigal · 15/01/2020 19:01

That's a fair point Janice. Also I know from reading previous Twitter conversations with the Liverpool Echo specifically and GC tweeters that they say they need to do this to conform to IPSO guidelines.

I guess Beaumont Society needs a new niche now that Stonewall advocates for cross-dressers (as per Stonewall's own glossary), and they've decided that helping men get into women's prisons is a worthy cause.

Maybe because this is a gay male with a history of mental health and drug issues who has been calling themselves a woman for nearly 20 years, and not your middle age shouty AGP.

Ereshkigal · 15/01/2020 19:05

The thread I posted lays out the Liverpool Echo's editorial position on court (and general) reporting when a transgender person is involved.

PencilsInSpace · 15/01/2020 19:06

Why is Dr Jane Hamlin citing the 2016 rules when these were replaced last Autumn because of what happened with Karen White? (Mockers' link is the new rules).

Sensible suggestion Babdoc

Like changing rooms and loos though it won't validate their feelings.

Tough. Validation vs safety from sexual assault. Hardly a headscratcher is it? Angry

carly2803 · 15/01/2020 19:39

HE, is where HE belongs. end of

in regards to the crime regardless of assigned sex at birth - its disgusting.

Datun · 15/01/2020 19:45

The paper might be under an obligation to use she pronouns, but anyone reading it is going to be pretty out raged. The photo, the pronouns, the crimes. It's all ridiculous, and comes across exactly as it is.

Ereshkigal · 15/01/2020 19:48

YY Datun.

InionEile · 15/01/2020 19:56

You know I can often be snippy about transwomen going overboard with make up and heels and mini-skirts after transition ‘that’s not how women dress FFS!’ is my usual reaction.

And then I see a picture of someone like Tamara and I think...hmm, well there are upsides to the over the top styles some wear. At least they’re making an effort!

GirlDownUnder · 15/01/2020 22:30

”Dr Jane Hamlin, the President of the Beaumont Society, the longest established support group for transgender people, said Williams should not suffer "extra punishment".”

I did not realise that all this time Beaumont was established to support transgender people. I wonder how many transmen they’ve helped.

‘Transgender people should not suffer "extra punishment"’ but fuck the non transgender people (women) who have to be housed with this person (who belongs to the class of people known to be a higher risk to the class of people they’ll be housed with), and cannot escape.

GirlDownUnder · 15/01/2020 22:31

Personally though, I don’t care that this person has stubble, or is not wearing make-up.

Having a hair free chin, and liking lippy does not a female make.

Doyoumind · 15/01/2020 22:36

Careful Inion or the thread police will be along here to tell you off for talking about a trans woman's appearance. Or maybe not in this case Hmm

Is this really true? What value does freedom have if journalists have to print lies?

lollybee1 · 15/01/2020 22:43

Perhaps there should be a unisex prison available.

ThePurported · 15/01/2020 22:43

It all goes back to BS. The thread linked by Pencils is very illuminating.

scotsheather · 15/01/2020 22:43

And we still don't have a definitive meaning of "lived as a woman" for X years. Other than give birth (check), other niceties of our reproductive system, oh and the (un)equal pay dispute, unfair treatment claim......

PencilsInSpace · 15/01/2020 22:43

Stephen Whittle. I think that's about it. And by 'help' I mean a leg-up in Stephen's career.

Read the Twitter thread I posted below. It deals with another, ahem, interesting case of this nature coveted by the Liverpool Echo court reporters. The reporter gives his reasons.

Ereshkigal · 15/01/2020 22:47

Covered, not coveted!
