I'm a feminist and I've had a breast enlargement

Phew, thanks to the Mya clinic advert I've just seen I know I can augment my breasts if I wish and still be a feminist. Who knew?!

It's great that you will call yourself a feminist. There is currently a thread all about women who can't bring themselves to do this.

Well done!

smileylottie87 · 12/01/2020 14:20

I haven't seen that thread, will have a look. I just I think it's a really strange way to sell a breast enlargement.

calllaaalllaaammma · 12/01/2020 14:21

Do you have a link to the advert?

Honeybee85 · 12/01/2020 14:25

Isn’t the whole idea of feminism that every woman has the right to express her femininity in any way she wants? For some women that might include a boob job.

whatnow40 · 12/01/2020 14:34

I'm, I've had a boob job. Didn't realise it could stop me being a feminist. Are saggy tits a pre requisite? Hmm

smileylottie87 · 12/01/2020 14:41

I can't link but I found a version of it on YouTube called the every body campaign. In the advert I saw Sherrifa says "I'm a feminist and I've had a breast enlargement". Hopefully the picture attaches

Was it this one?

No choices are made in a vacuum though are they, plus it's all marketing bollocks, they got slapped down for the Love Island style ads so they've decided to go for "diversity" ooh, we've even included a feminist (you can do both) tee hee That'll stop the naysayers that criticise us for preying on peoples insecurities and cashing in on the pornification of everyday life.

Nope..still see MYA and their ilk as adding to the problem.

joystir59 · 12/01/2020 14:46

I wonder if there are any lesbians who've had breast enlargements? In other words do women have breast enlargements for any reason other than to pander to the male gaze?

Wherearemyminions · 12/01/2020 14:47

I don't think OP is saying that having a boob job means you can't be a feminist, just calling out the cynical marketing here of trying to use feminism to sell cosmetic surgery.

TheTigersBride · 12/01/2020 14:51

I'm not a lesbian and have never had any form of cosmetic surgery. I do however find it tedious that anything a woman does which remotely might be considered making herself feel good about how she looks is "pandering to the male gaze"

FrogsFrogs · 12/01/2020 14:54

'Isn’t the whole idea of feminism that every woman has the right to express her femininity in any way she wants?'

In short, no.

FrogsFrogs · 12/01/2020 14:55

'Are saggy tits a pre requisite?'

Interesting post.

The whole idea of feminism is the liberation of women. Nothing to do with 'expressing femininity'.

You can be a feminist and have breast enlargements, but having breast enlargements is not a feminist act.

smileylottie87 · 12/01/2020 14:58

That's the online ad @Wherearemyminions there is a tv ad where the models speak but they are essentially the same, thank you. You are also right about the intention of the post Smile

BIA-ALCL, ruptured implants, and going under general anaesthesia for bigger tits. It's not exactly fake lashes is it.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6677439/NINE-women-died-deadly-cancer-linked-breast-implants.html I know someone recovering from this.

I guess many women don't like their upper arms, but hardly anyone has bingo wing reduction. Women avoid wearing strappy tops because they are self conscious but hardly anyone has that surgery.
Why is it tits that make such a big difference to self esteem? It's got to be the reaction from men. It's instant "added sexy".

I don't tell people what to do but you have to realise nobody makes choices like that in a vacuum. And the fact that it is fairly major surgery but is played down (hence "boob job") and the fact it is temporary is never mentioned either. www.healthline.com/health/how-long-do-implants-last

Gingerkittykat · 12/01/2020 15:19

Why do you think women only want plastic surgery to make them more attractive to men?

If I haad the money I would have my saggy old boobs uplifted and possibly reduced because it would make me feel better, I might also get the fat sucked out of my thighs for the same reason.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 12/01/2020 15:23

Feminism is about liberation from the patriarchy, and in order to truly liberate ourselves from the patriarchy then we do need to acknowledge that our choices are very much made as a result of the society we live in, and the only purpose of breast augmentation is to please the male gaze.

‘Feminism’ isn’t a catch all term to mean women can do anything and we have to support it in the name of feminism- because we shouldn’t, I don’t support prostitution and I don’t support porn or stripping because they are harmful to women.

I often think we should stop using the world ‘feminism’ and start saying ‘women’s liberation’ again.

And back to the original topic - I wish we lived in a world where no one felt they had to have plastic surgery to feel good or feel beautiful because everyone should feel beautiful exactly as they are.

ArabellaDoreenFig · 12/01/2020 15:25

Ahh sorry I’ve cross posted with some of you !

EverardDigby · 12/01/2020 15:26

My feminism aims to ensure that women are not told that our perfectly normal human body in all its different variations doesn't look good enough and needs to be adapted through time consuming, expensive and dangerous procedures.

It's getting worse, my DD was telling me about all the videos on Tik Tok of young women getting lip fillers, even those with already full lips.

whatnow40 · 12/01/2020 15:27

I had a boob job for myself, no one else. Not many people know I've even had one, they don't look fake. My DM didn't notice.

I lost 7st (for myself, not for the male gaze) and my boobs were empty fleshy pouches. Excess skin with no real body tissue behaves differently than fat does, if lean over at work and the skin would just roll out of my bra and leave a weird outline under my top. I couldn't swim as the skin would just float up out of my swimming costume. I started using tit tape to keep them under control at work but was tearing my skin with the adhesive.

I decided to get implants to give me a more natural looking shape that would be contained in my clothes better. It meant I could go on holiday and swim, wear a vest top etc. Things I had done happily when fat, but couldn't do at a normal weight.

I asked for a quote to remove my bingo wings - £8k. £3.5k for boobs so a significant difference. And the scars that go down your arms from a bingo-wing-ectomy go as far as your elbows, so I would still wear longer sleeves to hide the scars anyway.

popehilarious · 12/01/2020 15:32

I hate ads like this. Sort of implying false dichotomies. I've never bought a Dove product since their patronising ads featuring women that were SO UNUSUAL - older than 25, or freckly - while pointing out that 'hey! Maybe we should look past the freckles or not worry about them being old!!' Yeah, cheers, Dove.

youkiddingme · 12/01/2020 15:33

Why are saggy tits unattractive?

I'm an old lass with small, saggy tits. But I think that's fine.

I appreciate it might be for some (instagram is also largely to blame for that I believe).
The few women I know who had a boob job did it because they felt uncomfortable about their bodies. One did it because one of her boobs was much larger then the other. Another woman did it because she felt her boobs were not in proportion with the rest of her body. Both of them smart and independent ladies, one was single, the other one in a relationship. I think they would find it highly insulting if someone told them they did it to be more attractive to men; it’s perfectly normal to not be satisfied about some parts of your body and wanting to fix them. I did a nose job because I hated my nose, no man ever told me it was ugly and ex bf, friends and family tried to talk the idea out of my head.
