Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Advertising friendly feminist topics!

Ooh, let's brainstorm some lovely feminist things to talk about!

I'm sure there must be some advertising-friendly way of calling out patriarchy and its evil twin, consumerism. Right ?

Gender-neutral toys, including dolls and footballs.

Gender neutral children's clothes.

DIY/gardening tools designed for smaller hands, but just as effective as 'standard' size ones.

DIY/gardening tools in colours other than manly black/green/navy. (My pink-handled garden tools show up in the grass, and they are standard sized so both dh and I can use them comfortably.)

Can't escape consumerism.

Thelnebriati · 09/01/2020 13:24

I've got one! Pockets.

Here for a feminist forum devoted to pockets. Surely no advertiser could object!

Sure, we'll have no sex-based rights, but we'll have big pockets to put things in :)

(I really do believe in pockets..maybe not as a way to take down patriarchy, but in their own right. My dress right now has pockets.)

Sure! Is there some huge gardening company over there who can approve this particular feminist agitation before we discuss further ?

IDK though, they are a bit vagina-ey if you think about it too much.

OK, no pockets, as they might trigger the pocket advertisers.

So far we've got toys and gardening tools as suitable for advertiser approved feminist chat. Such a lovely start.

Surely pockets go down and vaginas go up?

JellySlice · 09/01/2020 13:51

Maybe that's why men like to have their hands inside them so much.

Equally, maybe that's why men fear them in women's clothing so much!

But definitely we should discuss pockets. Pockets are a feminist issue. Besides, advertisers could advertise things we would put in pockets.

JanesKettle - Diana Vreeland famously launched the idea of pockets in everything one day during her tenure as editrix of American Vogue. When she finished talking, the silence was deafening until somebody kindly explained that the ad revenue from handbags/leather goods manufacturers accounted for a large chunk of this revenue.
Pockets won’t be happening any time soon and I say this as a woman who owns at least 12 handbags and also uses her pockets.

Mass pocket sew-ins ?

Catsfriend · 09/01/2020 14:10

To be fair, there are pockets in everything already. Even in some T-shirts. I only buy stuff that has pockets deep enough to hide my hands and prevent me from fiddling. 😬

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2020 15:09

Re the DIY tools, the small-grip spanners should be longer than standard.

And workwear for tough jobs - I'm about to look online for a new pair of thorn proof 'riggers' in a small size, the shops and garden centres always have loads of men's, and usually a few ladies medium size but never small. Hmm

JellySlice · 09/01/2020 15:29

And never in L or XL, either. Because fat women don't do DIY Hmm

For that matter, can we get rid of labelling clothes S M L XL etc? Let's stick either to our weird number size system, or to actual measurements, rather than judgemental adjectives to describe clothing sizes.

Right I'm in, this is my bloody soapbox thing (well one of them)
I have ended up often buying mens clothes because
Sizes in actual measurements that I can correlate to my own actual measurements and pockets.
Also mens sizes go bigger, and I'm big of nork. Some womens Ls and XLs are not big enough to cover said norks in some companies (looking at saltrock now) and other companies have very generous sizes and I am a size 14 or large depending🤷‍♀️

Also for my job I -waft- wander around large site and plonk my arse wherever, if I cant remember to take a brolly for the outside wandering I wont remember where the hell I left my bag.

ScapaFlo · 09/01/2020 15:52

I looked at some fitness gear recently as I need to get active to lose weight and the size marked XXL was a size 16. That was the biggest available size. How do short fat women such as myself buy wearable fitness clothing as most men's sports stuff is far too long if it's big enough to go round my middle 🙄

Catsfriend · 09/01/2020 17:10

Have you tried H&M? I got mine there. I find their T-shirts ample enough and even end up downsizing. Decathlon is another fave, my friend who is short shops there.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 17:23

Domestic violence!

Female infanticide!

Um. Washable san-pro? Did I do it right?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 09/01/2020 18:54

Oh, plastic surgery?

'Women underwent 92% of all cosmetic procedures recorded'

MoleSmokes · 10/01/2020 06:14

There should be a law against making gardening tools green or mud-coloured!

Pockets. Pockets. Pockets . . . and more Pockets.

Pockets with zip closures. Pockets with button closures. Open pockets. Small pockets. Big pockets. Pockets with little straps with clips on the end for keeping keys safe. Spare pockets! Smile

I have given up hoping for tights/panti-hose that do not end up with the gusset between my knees or the top band under my arm-pits and have gone back to sturdy suspender belts (3 or 4 straps per leg) and cutting the legs off thermal tights to make winter stockings - so thermal stockings would be nice. With pockets Smile

JellySlice · 10/01/2020 07:38

No, no, no, Scrimshaw, only naice things. Be kind, now. We don't want any of this nasty shrewishness. Advertisers must not be scared way.

midgebabe · 10/01/2020 07:51

Does it just have to be things women want to spend money on, helping out those lovely advertisers? Or can we also discuss things where we show how kind and thoughtful we are, like the impact of patriarchy on male mental health ?

AuntieStella · 10/01/2020 07:52

"How do short fat women such as myself buy wearable fitness clothing as most men's sports stuff is far too long if it's big enough to go round my middle"

Try Contra

<a class="break-all" href="https://contra-movement.comcontra-movement.com" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">contra-movement.comcontra-movement.com

Ethical brand, goes up to 52 (bust) 46 (waist) 56 (hips). Has same range of colours and products in both npmans and worms sections (though sometimes Capri length is available for women only)

And Wolf and Roger Dyas for bright, easy to see gardening tools

MoleSmokes · 10/01/2020 08:17

Thank you AuntieStella ! My favourite hard-to-lose-in-the-long-grass leopard-print secateurs have just given up the ghost!

AuntieStella · 10/01/2020 08:23

Roger Dyas - oops that sounds like one is doing more in the herbaceous biorders than weeding them - it should be Robert Dyas. I don't think they do anything as exciting as leopard print, though (where did you get them, they sound great!)

But like 'garble and worms' should have been "men's and women's"

MoleSmokes · 10/01/2020 08:42

The Leopard-print gardening tools, I am guessing were from TKMaxx AuntieStella - the trowel is still doing good service in the herbaceous borders - can't remember where I got the Leopard-skin tent and Trilby from though Smile
