Arran, where is your quote from?

ArranUpsideDown · 22/12/2019 11:44

I don't want to out her but she is a Mumsnetter from time to time (if I'm correct).

NightLion · 22/12/2019 11:46

Lol! Is she?

BovaryX · 22/12/2019 11:48

there is something inherently bad and oppressive about thinking humans come in two sexes, and hence to underpin all the nonsense about ‘colonialism inventing the gender binary’ and the technical gibberish about whitecisheteropatriarchy

That’s an interesting analysis. I hadn’t heard about the colonial angle, but in one of TimeLady’s excellent links, Stephen Whittle was claiming that the concept of dimorphism sex didn’t emerge until the 18th century.....Hmm

Thescrewinthetuna · 22/12/2019 11:49

Grin made me laugh

BovaryX · 22/12/2019 11:49

dimorphic sex

BovaryX · 22/12/2019 11:51

^Love that. Whatsit called when the parody is hard to tell from the real thing?

Frightening^

ChattyLion · 22/12/2019 11:52

What will anyone who disagrees be told?

ArranUpsideDown · 22/12/2019 11:56

What will anyone who disagrees be told?

There is some pushback interplay on the thread that is entertaining.

Should there be a MN standard response? Something with a V for Viper?

ahumanfemale · 22/12/2019 11:58

Hang on What will anyone who disagrees be told?
Die in a trans fat fire?

DecemberDays · 22/12/2019 12:03

Re Stephen Whittle, scientific concepts of dimorphic sex arguably did not emerge until the 18th century when they were used to separate men and women in public life and the emerging professions (for example, medicine).

But people have always known who was male and who was female, for example, which group gave birth and (traditionally) who this birthing group were attended by (other women); which group were able to rape which group and so on; which group were made like Adam and which like Eve with the hierarchy that involved. It is nonsense to suggest otherwise.

The new ways scientists sought to explain and exploit sexual difference from the 18th century is not the same as saying that sexual difference did not exist Hmm - how did humans continue to procreate then? By accident?

LangCleg · 22/12/2019 12:04

AFAB transwoman was a thing on the Twatter about three years ago, IIRC. Loads of feminist had it in their bios and it sent the genderists gibbering (although at this point, I'm pretty stumped to think of anything that doesn't send them gibbering). Shortly before the Goody fashion!

BovaryX · 22/12/2019 12:12

But people have always known who was male and who was female, for example

Precisely. And the claim that male and females only emerged as distinct classes during the industrial revolution conveniently ignores the world beyond Europe. Where biological sex, alongside other significant factors, has had a defining influence on social roles for thousands of years....

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 22/12/2019 12:15

Ah, circumgender returns!

DecemberDays · 22/12/2019 12:17

Biological sex still does have a defining influence on social roles the world over. Even in post-industrial countries, who does the vast majority of child-rearing and care work? Not men.

WomanBornNotWorn · 22/12/2019 12:29

I think it's a joke. I THINK. Looking at what the account is sharing.

Horehound · 22/12/2019 12:53

@WomanBornNotWorn yep. Figured that out a wee while ago.
To be fair I am sleep deprived and it just didn't "click" when I initially read it. Then when a pp said it was a parody I re read and all became clear. Silly me!

InionEile · 22/12/2019 20:29

Who is this Stephen White chap / person / chapess? (don’t want to assume their gender!!). Never heard of them but I did study medieval history for 4 years in college and all the literature & sources I am familiar with, whether Christian, Muslim or any other cultures, have very clear awareness of and delineation between two biological sexes. This ‘post colonial’ interpretation of the sex binary as part of the history of white supremacist imperialism is a new idea and not a very convincing one, IMO.

HorseWithNoBlueHair · 23/12/2019 13:32

Poe's law that's it, thanks Errol.

And yep, frightening.

HorseWithNoBlueHair · 23/12/2019 13:35

Die in a trans fat fire?

Well that's just fucking priceless.

You don't even need this level of expertise to know for a fact it's unbelievable level bollocks.

You just need a primary education level knowledge of Henry VIII

If people didn't know about sex until the industrial revolution ... what was with his 40 year long, head chopping quest for a son?

nevermorelenore · 23/12/2019 14:11

I'm a trans woman too. No I will not confirm whether I was born with a vagina. Whhhy are you so obsessed with our genitaaaaaaals.

JellySlice · 23/12/2019 16:35

Re Stephen Whittle, scientific concepts of dimorphic sex arguably did not emerge until the 18th century

That's because 'science' as we recognise it (driven by empirical proof rather than ontological) arguably did not emerge until the 18th century in Western Europe.

Yet, even before the Industrial Revolution, individuals and society had no difficulties recognising the male/female dimorphism of the human race and assigning roles accordingly.
