Floisme · 04/12/2019 07:12

Well I agree with the University of York over one thing. This does not make them look good.

NotAssigned · 04/12/2019 07:14

Forms and form.

Milanimilani · 04/12/2019 07:15

Again and again I get shocked by the idea that we are not allowed to say that men are men. I hope that it never seems normal to have to lie.

BovaryX · 04/12/2019 07:24

I have just watched the excellent video of the speech Dr. Louise Moody gave at WPUK. She is a superb speaker, but it’s hard to listen to it without feeling a combination of shock, anger and incredulity that this is actually what is happening in 21st century UK to any women brave enough to assert belief in objective reality. I know many women on this forum have been fighting against this oppression for some time, but most of the UK public, including me until a few months ago, are not aware of what is going on. This is an Orwellian assault on the very Enlightenment values which should define academia. She is being sued? Who is funding this lobby group? Why are universities which should be the guardians of freedom of speech and for whom objective reality should be the benchmark of debate capitulating to this?

BadgertheBodger · 04/12/2019 08:04

Bovary it’s totally outrageous isn’t it. She is fabulous, I’m so glad there are some female GC academics like her who won’t take this lying down

NotTerfNorCis · 04/12/2019 08:07

She takes the view that transgender women are not women but men.

If they were women they wouldn't be trans, surely? Only males can be transwomen.

BovaryX · 04/12/2019 08:17

She is very brave but it’s just so shocking that this level of Stasi like bullying is being used to forcibly silence women. Douglas Murray made a very interesting point in one interview on this topic, that it’s only people like him who don’t have a boss and are not vulnerable to being sacked who can discuss this without penalty. It’s absolutely outrageous

RoyalCorgi · 04/12/2019 08:35

What the hell is wrong with these people? It's not just the horrendous bullying and the attacks on freedom of speech that get me - deplorable though those are in a university. No, the thing that strikes me most is the sheer fucking stupidity. These are academics. They're supposed to be able to use their brains. Instead, they're expressing horror at the fact that someone has dared to say that 2 +2 = 4, not 5.

How can institutional capture have got this far? What's happened?

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 04/12/2019 08:41

I hope the UoY shat themselves when they got the SAR.

Imagine the meetings that were had after they realised the volume of stuff they had to hand over.

BovaryX · 04/12/2019 08:42

It’s because for over two decades freedom has been relegated to the bottom of the list by politicians. This includes the one party who should have its protection hard wired into its political DNA. This is the outcome of the erosion of that definitional principle. The bludgeon being used is hate speech and ‘equality’ 1984 really has been adopted as a manual not a warning

tooyoungat40 · 04/12/2019 08:46

I don't seriously think that they believe that Transgender women are really women. But they are too afraid to state publicly there view. They are watching very carefully what they put in writing in order that they do not (in their view) make themselves vulnerable afterwards. They are shit-scared of bad PR because they worry that bad PR could affect student numbers - their bread and butter. It looks like we need one strong and brave University to put their heads above the parapet and come out as gender critical at an institutional level. Once one does it, I reckon it will be a domino effect. But don't hold your breath.

tooyoungat40 · 04/12/2019 08:49

their, not there

Let's hope so. But what that means is that there is a collective, unspoken agreement amongst universities throughout the country - the guardians of our intellectual life - to pretend to believe a blatant falsehood.

Isn't that extraordinary?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 04/12/2019 10:08

The government started with the pre-16 education sector: dumbing down the system and trying to turn children into approved clones: because heaven forbid they might have differing levels of ability and skills in different areas.

Now that mission is accomplished - and new undergraduates can't tell 'been' from 'being', 'sat' from 'sitting' or construct a basic sentence in subject-verb-object order - they're starting with H.E. Universities can no longer function in terms of their original intended purpose. They are censorious, almost dystopian, ideology-factories, rather thana place for developing the critical thinking and autonomy of their students as they claim to do.

Humanities departments are really big on teaching dystopia, ideology and totalitarianism: why? Because it's a 'sexy' topic and their students enjoy learning about it and will often opt for modules in that general subject area.

Yet the stated policies of many HEIs are now going back on the fundamental premise that a belief system without room for debate or questioning is a dangerous thing.

And misogyny is rife in this 'enlightened' sector: perhaps more so than in other walks of life, difficult though that is to believe. Sexual harrassment is endemic: almost every female lecturer has a story. And harrassing women, as Louise Moody is being harrassed, is possibly even more endemic: so much so that it's becoming viewed as normal.

She has my utmost sympathy in having to work under conditions like this.

BovaryX · 04/12/2019 10:58

there is a collective, unspoken agreement amongst universities throughout the country - the guardians of our intellectual life - to pretend to believe a blatant falsehood

And to actively persecute, sack, bully and no platform anyone who refuses to comply. It shows intellectual cowardice, moral bankruptcy. These academic institutions have relinquished intellectual freedom for censorship by a group of aggressive bullies. It’s shameful

Ereshkigal · 04/12/2019 10:59

It really is.

RubyViolet · 04/12/2019 11:34

It’s targeted harassment by the usual suspects, is this what they do all day ?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 04/12/2019 11:45

@RubyViolet, in a word, yes. Check out the Twitter feed on the UCU (Universities and College Union) strikes that are due to conclude today. All over Twitter there are stories of bullying and harrassment by university management.

One university is telling its international students their Tier 4 visas will be affected if they don't cross picket lines and attend during the strike period. Another is telling its staff it will dock their salaries if they work to their (legal) 37 hour a week contract (many do about 50 hours). Yet another is posting forms to its student body, asking them to 'grass' on their striking lecturers and send the form to them showing who these people are.

If you think these examples are exaggerated (they're not) you can find evidence for all of this on Twitter, along with individual horror stories from lecturers about exactly why they're striking.

Work intensification is the official reason given by the union, but this, of course, is being achieved by driving staff hard and bullying them into submission.

UK Higher Education really has degenerated into a sorry state, I'm sad to say.
