File on Four on Radio Four tonight at 8 will be exploring those who detransition and whether enough is done about other factors before transition.
I'll be tuning in...

Why all this publicity? Surely it is a private thing decided by the transitioner in the first place?

We are not allowed to criticise transitioning. We are now not allowed to criticise de transitioning.

I just don't understand the angst about all this. I am sorry to say that I ignore it all most of the time. It is an individual decision, rightly or wrongly.

Only thing I am concerned about is trans and gender neutral toilets and changing rooms really.

There has been too much activism behind this tiny proportion of our population now. Where I live, trans can self identify, but there is none of this going on at all. We still have gender selective toilets and changing rooms and so on. No activism about that so far!

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 18:45

Just came to see if anyone had picked it up.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 26/11/2019 20:01

Bump.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 26/11/2019 20:02

Tuning in thanks for the flag

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:04

Gender assigned at birth... Eh?

nauticant · 26/11/2019 20:05

This has not had a promising start.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:05

8-10 surgeries a week.

cwg1 · 26/11/2019 20:06

8-10 surgeries a week Sad

Bluerussian · 26/11/2019 20:10

Thanks, I saw something about it on Newsnight and it was said that there would be a radio 4 programme tonight but I forgot until you mentioned it. I'll catch up with it.

What I believe is important is the highlighting of those who regret transitioning later on; they may be small in number but significant when you consider how young people are often allowed to go ahead before they are sufficiently mature to understand the long term implications. Organisations like Mermaids encourage this. That's something which should be vigorously resisted.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 26/11/2019 20:11

Some of the explanatory text of what trans is was the same as Newsnight. There is clearly a BBC approved script on some of this.

nauticant · 26/11/2019 20:12

Charlie Evans does come across well.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:13

Traditional family pushing gender stereotypes, gay. Taking testosterone, for two years.

300 detransitioners, contacted Charlie. Charlie is facing a back lash. Charlie fears for lesbian girls.

TheCuriousMonkey · 26/11/2019 20:13

Why does someone with a female body who is "non-binary" need a "more masculine" chest? The internalised misogyny at play, the assumption that male is the default human, so much so that healthy breasts are removed, is absolutely tragic.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:15

Private practice.

They presented in late adolescence. After 14 or 15.

Some were autistic.

Mermaids getting a mention

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:16

Some are detransitioning due to society not making them feel comfortable.. mermaids person.

nauticant · 26/11/2019 20:19

According to the programme, detransition figures: "2% or even lower".

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:19

Over 8000 people sought help from gender Id clinics.

Some in the trans community are afraid of talking of detransitioning as it will stop funding..

Some suggest 2% detransition, some say lower, research is flawed... No records are kept by NHS.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 26/11/2019 20:20

Debbie (now detransition from being F2M) talking about transition as a way to escape history of sexual abuse. This wasn’t on Newsnight. Poor Debbie.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:21

Debbie, CSA victim, trying to get away from the trauma.

P
Talking about her body having mutilated. The Dr was found guilty of misconduct for rushing people into transing. V

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/11/2019 20:22

I’m not listening live but I’ll try to later.

I think the problem is that other issues aren’t explored before someone transitions.

Speaking from the experience I’ve observed of a young trans person in my life, if they ‘decided’ they weren’t trans any more they would suddenly lose so many friends and support networks. Also after years of support it’s hard to say ‘I was wrong’.
This isn’t to say all young transitioners are wrong or confused but I can see how it is easy to allow this to be a defining aspect of your personality, social life and friendships.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:22

Sorry for random letters and notes, on phone and fat fingers...

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 26/11/2019 20:23

Tbh isn’t wanting to “escape” being female pretty understandable, and yet not the real solution, with that abuse history? So why don’t we try and provide such people with proper help to deal with their trauma rather than affirming?

On Newsnight the NHS claimed there was “extensive help” but it’s not true.

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:24

Not everyone gets surgery, even if they ask, 1 in 5 not referred, 2 clinicians need to agree, patient needs to have taken cross sex hormones for a year

BlackeyedSusan · 26/11/2019 20:26

the detransers Feel mainstream health services are not catering for the detransitioners.
